Did you know that there are food containing nickel?

Six hundred million people around the world, including me, are allergic to nickel. I have to avoid non pure metals, such as belt buckles, jewellery and watches or else my skin would get ridiculously itchy and I’d scratch non stop and when I finally realise it, it’s too late and I’ve ruined my skin.

rinaz.net

My apologies for such a disturbing picture. But oh gosh, yuck! I never realised how severe something was until I take a picture, get myself healed, compare it with before and see it for myself!

My skin is healing a lot better now by the way and I was at the allergologo (doctor specialising in allergies) a while back and apart from telling me what I already know, he also mentioned that there are food that I might have to avoid as they contain nickel.

I was stunned to hear them as he went along the top 5 :

  • Chocolate
  • Liquorice
  • Peanuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Spinach / Tomato / Pears

rinaz.net

What? Most of them food that I like. Yikes! A life in Italy without pomodoro is a difficult life. I like my pizza rosso. I like my pasta with red sauce. Heck, I even like Riso Pomodoro. VOTEEZDEEZ? Luckily for me though, the doctor mentioned that I don’t have to avoid them completely. Just reduce the intake on the ‘flare up’ days.

10 things I love about you

Ehm. A little bit corny, but still …

rinaz.net

Everyday I feel blessed and I think that we are so lucky to have met each other. I’ve never met any other man who is as patient, and kind and as comforting as you are. I feel safe with you and you’ve made me open up and made me view the world in a more receptive way.

It’s funny how I get impatient with the people I care the most. And there are days when I get annoyed or sometimes angry with you. And sometimes there are things that I wish I could change about you. Nevertheless you never fight my fire or get cross with me. I don’t even remember a time in our years together when you shouted at me. Instead, you let me mellow out in my own way.

And I can tell you anything. Anything! Even the most ridiculous things like cosmetics and celebrity gossip without feeling like you’re judging me. And instead you engage me patiently, asking me questions to show me that you heard and understood me.

We are such different people, you and I. But in some of the things that we are weak at, we support each other in our strengths. I think we fit each other so well and it’s been a great relationship so far.

Ti amo!

Adventures in sewing fail!

Remember this?

rinaz.net

Cart and I finally manage to translate the hieroglyphs from the cartamodella (template) when we went to a shop that sells zips and buttons and other finishings. There happened to be a lady-customer that has her own sewing shop and kindly, she showed us how to read the cartamodella. It was quite easy once you’ve got a hang of it.

I’ve already decided on making this skirt.

rinaz.net

So happily Cart and I went to a fabric shop which was not too far away and chose some fabrics for my skirt. By the way, FYI shops in Italy tend to be precise. If you need a pair of tailor’s scissors for example, you need to buy them in a specific shop. Or if you need a tracing paper, you need to go to another shop. Even for my car if I have tyre issues I need to visit a gommista for electrical issues an elettrauto etc. I’ve never come across an all-in-one.

Anyway, I told the lady that since I’m just a beginner and am just practising, I don’t want a too expensive fabric. She nodded her head and kept saying, “Si si, capisco”. So I was lulled in a false sense of security. I chose a beautiful brown and light brown fabric, which I thought would look simple, but elegant.

But just before she started to cut the fabric, Cart quickly and wisely asked, “Wait! How much is this?”

rinaz.net

To make a long story short, 3.5 meters of the georgette fabric costs 70 euro. My heart sank and I was close to leaving the store. 70 euro for a skirt is rather costly. We were in central Rome not too long back and I was amazed at the prices of the fabrics. But since we were in the city centre, I thought that the prices would normally be jacked up.Thus I couldn’t believe that the price would be like that in the residential area too.

Even the material for making one of my wedding outfits didn’t cost that much. But of course, things costs differently in different parts of the world.

But Cart decided to buy the fabric for me as a gift, which was nice of him. And we had an interesting evening tracing the cartamodella and then cutting the fabric itself. It’s like … +10 exp!!! And in the end, we had 4 separate pieces of cloth that we were supposed to sew together.

But I did a quick stitch before sewing it proper to have a quick preview of it like how my mum tends to do it and this is what happened.

rinaz.net

Hmm. Something isn’t right here. How could this be? We followed the entire instructions correctly. In fact, it’s supposed to be very loose even as I’m a size 42 and the template we were using were for 44 (the smallest)

Meh! Suffice to say that I’m giving up on this hobby for now as it’s a tad too expensive for a housewife. And I’m not the only one who is stunned by the prices, even friends from other parts of Italy shared me stories of how costly their materials are for their sewing experiments.

For the moment, I’ll change my game plan : To buy clothes from thrift shops and from bancarelle and adjust it to fit me ala NDAD. I think that makes more cents (geddit geddit?) :p

How to pick up chicks

This was in the mailbox a week ago.

rinaz.net

It’s a booklet for Mondo Convenienza which is a furniture shop, kind of like the Italian version of Ikea. Looks pretty innocuous doesn’t it? But lets take a look at it a little closer.

rinaz.net

Oh gosh, look at the dude … the eyes and the grin combo, top if off that the girl is on the bed, he looks so creepy perverted! I can imagine the internal thoughts between them :

Man : I’m gonna get lucky tonight! If I stare at her long enough, I’m sure she’ll be charmed by my masculinity. Aha!

Woman : Why is he staring at me like that? It’s creepy! (Uncomfortable smile) Just a bit more to go till the photo-shoot is over and I’m out of here!

So there you go men, if you want to pick up chicks … Just stare at them long enough and see what happens.

Mousse alla Nutella is better than sex

I didn’t even know that it was World Nutella day till Nerys mentioned it on twitter yesterday.

rinaz.net

I’m not crazy about nutella, but whenever I’m eating out, I always choose to eat Mousse alla Nutella if the restaurants have it. Have you had one before? If you haven’t, you should! You should! You should! (I’m saying this 3 times because it’s that awesome) It’s wonderful and luxurious and decadent and is sure to make you very contented with each spoonful.

rinaz.net

There are restaurants that serves them with chocolate shavings on top, and some that puts layers of cream and syrup and cookie crumbles.

rinaz.net

But the one that I like the best has got to be this deceptively simple looking one from Antica Schiacciata Romana. From top to bottom is pure Nutella Mousse topped with pine nuts.

rinaz.net

Every single bite feels soft and fluffy on your tongue, Immediately the rich taste of hazelnut and chocolate hits you and you feel good all over, immersing yourself in the heavenly, comforting feeling, compelling you to take another bite. And so you do it again, and again to keep the constant buzz.

And yet, it is not cloying, the thick feeling you get when you eat most other rich and decadent food. And once you’ve spooned the last bit of the creamy deliciousness, you feel happy and content. And all is al-right with the world.

Technically, it should be easy to make them – the most basic recipe calls for nutella and whipped cream. However, the most basic recipe tend to usually be the most challenging. Like omelette and Kuih Bahulu. Nevertheless, I think I would like to give it a try soon. Perhaps even for Valentines day. Romantic? I’ll eat them all by myself. Cos I’m greedy like that.

Wow, I hit 19 kms!

Hi everyone!

So during the weekend, I managed to run 19 km which is the longest run that I had to do in my training schedule. On the day itself, I was dreading it. Trying to postpone it or basically not run at all. 19 km is daunting! But there is no other time like now. And I told myself, if anything bad happens, like a sprain or exhaustion, just walk the rest of the journey. Thankfully nothing serious happened and now that I’ve done it, I’m quite happy of myself.

rinaz.net

The rest of the training will get easier and taper down and I think I’m more or less ready in time for the Roma Ostia half-marathon come 3 March. To be honest, if you asked me if I could do this a year ago, mentally I probably don’t think I could. But after following the training schedule, it gave me more confidence that I can do it.

I mean,  after running 5 km, what’s another 2 km more the next time? Then after running 7km, it’s just another 2 km more. And before you know it you’ve hit 19 km already. Just another 2 km to go in three weeks time. I can do this!

rinaz.net

I’m not going to lie and gloss over and pretend that everything was perfect, because it wasn’t. The last few kms was a bother and a pain. My legs started crying out and I had to slow my pace down because I really didn’t want to injure myself.

And then by the time I was done, I was sweaty and disgusting and the only thing that I had in mind was to lie down. So as soon as I reached home, I looked at the sofa and then the bed but didn’t want to dirty them so I layed myself on the floor for a good 10 minutes and waited for the pulsating feeling to pass over.

rinaz.net

And then the rest of the day, I walked like an old woman with osteoporosis – complaining while going down the stairs as I can feel each step … sort of like when the little mermaid first got her feet. So much pins and needles!

Which is why, at this point of time, I don’t even want to THINK of joining a marathon. I feel tired just thinking about it. But despite all that, I haven’t regretted the past weeks. I feel really good about myself. I know that I have discipline and determination, that if I set my mind on something, I know that I can do it.

Health and physical wise, I don’t feel any different though. It’s not like I see a 6 pack on my tummy or I walk fast like the flash when I go around. But I’m just happy that after an intensive run, I recover and am back to almost 100% the next day.

Anyway, something interesting that I noticed after since starting my training :

1. I get fungry all the time. Now I can eat an entire plate of pasta, and then have space for a helping of something else or eat an appetizer and then a whole pizza with no problems.

rinaz.net

2. Despite that, I don’t seem to put on any weight. Neither have I lost any. Cool! And that makes me think that I’ve reached the point where I can’t lose weight anymore. Cart thinks that my muscles are growing. My weighing machine has this function for measuring Body fat/Muscle/Bone density/BMI. But I didn’t have the foresight of recording them though! Would be interesting to compare them before and after.

rinaz.net

3. I think I am quite flat right now. No T and no A. Even my smallest and most comfy bra don’t seem fit well and they keep riding up cos there’s nothing to hold them down any more.  Now I’m very tempted to just go out in public bra-less.

By the way, before I end this post, I just found out that they give a 4k prize to the first man and woman to reach the finish line each. Cool! And 25k for Maratona di Roma. How lucrative! I see why there are a lot of contestants participating even from overseas. A good runner could make a good living out of this. Although I don’t think I am able to do that! I don’t even care about timings. All I want to do now is just to make sure that I finish the race!

Sidenote : If you are in Rome on the 3rd March and are free on the day, you’d make me really happy if you’d rally for me at Piazza Cristoforo Colombo which is the end point. My first half marathon! I’ll buy you a coffee 🙂

Tell me if you’re not freaked out in this situation

While Rome is a challenging place to drive – what with the lack of parking areas inversely proportional to the amount of impatient drivers. There is a specific area in Rome that tends to freak me out more than other when I drive in it.

Visualise driving in a residential area where practically everyone fights to get parking space. So they tend to drive extra fast when they spot one without caring for anyone else.

Now visualise you are driving (from left to right) and crossing this zebra. And there are cars (plural) parked on the zebra crossing, blocking your view. So you can’t see if there is any incoming traffic. So you inch closer and closer to see if there’s anything …

rinaz.net

And then VOOM! A car rushes in at high speed, narrowly injuring you. Wouldn’t you freak out too?

Anyway, just for fun I’m embedding this video of 3 car racers in Italy because this is the right way how it should be done 😛

This is a vain post

This is going to sound quite narcissistic, so I apologize in advance. But I like how my skin looks like nowadays. Have a look at this picture of me taken last Friday. Vain me can’t believe at how clear my skin is, even with hardly any mekap.

rinaz.net

The only products that I’ve slapped on my face are :

This means quite a lot to me because I’ve been battling with acne since I was a teenager. Not just the little ones mind you, but the big, angry, pulsating ones. Suffice to say that it made me feel ugly for the longest time.

rinaz.net
I’m not proud of this, but hey, this is how I was

I’ve tried a lot of different things. But to make a long story short, the thing that worked the best for me at the time was Diane-35 which is an oral contraceptive. But it also controls your hormones which affects your skin. I’ve stopped using it for about 4 years now since the year I got married. Thankfully, I haven’t had any flare-ups since.

Nevertheless, apart from that, I think that there are several factors that has brought on my better skin. Firstly, the doctor did mention that a woman’s hormonal system tends to stabilize when they reach their 30s. And now that I’m living in Rome, the cold winter effect is making my skin less oily and less prone to zits.

I’ve also been using an app on my phone to remind me to do my facial routine. I keep telling myself that it’s a good habit to wash + tone + eye cream + moisturise. But there are days when I feel super lazy.

rinaz.net

So I’ve been using this app called Habit Streak. It’s been very motivating for me, especially how I could look back and see how many days I can go without breaking a chain. So much so that it would be a shame if I did, so I try my hardest not to!

Apart from that, I don’t know what else that I did differently. Perhaps I’ve been reducing in consuming food that I know that triggers my flareups. And maybe I’ve been jogging more? (Although I don’t know how much that affects the skin)

Only thing is, now that I’m in my 30s and my battle with acne is over … but there is a new set of problems that I have to face soon … WRINKLES! So I’ll just enjoy my skin as it is for the moment :p
