An Italian vacation part 1 – Trastevere

A quick introduction:

Rinaz and Cart resting on a leaf

In October 2004, while exploring Secondlife , Cartcart and I happened to bump into each other. We became friends and then quickly fell in love. I decided to meet him in August 2005 and again in June 2006 while he came to Singapore for the first time in December 2006 .

I was hesitant to go to Italy this year because of several factors. One of them being my mum discouraging me to go as she believes that the flight money could be better used for our wedding ceremony. I agree with her point of view. But at the same time, I thought that it would be good to give him some form of ‘hand-holding’.

So I chickened out in telling both my parents about my plans until the day before. Which probably isnt the best thing to do as for the past weeks before my flight, I was feeling extremely guilty. When it was time to go, both of them were very concerned but resigned in the fact that I had already made up my mind in going.

Chatting with the cab driver on my way to the airport diverted my thoughts. At length, I reached the airport, checked in and passed through the security check before boarding the 12 hour flight to Amsterdam.

Sunrise over in Amsterdam

Amazingly this time, the flight was more bearable to me. Perhaps it was because I was more used to it and the fact that each seats on the plane had an entertainment center. The person beside me spent the entire journey playing chess while I watched some amazing movies that I didnt manage to catch. Like Happy Feet, Letters from Iwo Jiwa and Udon.

In time, I was on the transit flight and finally reached Rome in the morning and after what seemed to be an eternity waiting at the baggage carousel and then a baggage check by the curious security guards.

security guard 1 : Come here. Whats in the bag?

Me : My clothes of course

security guard 1 : Open the bag please and let me see your passport. Hmmm …

security guard 2 : Pass me her passport. Hmmm …

Me : …

After the strange baggage check, I entered the arrival hall and finally saw cartcart waiting for me. What a most warming sight. It was worth the 14 hour flight just to see him smile at me. The web just cant compare to seeing a loved one in real life. I miss his comforting hug.

We took the car to get home. As we drove by, I remember the highway, the fields, and the rustic buildings. But when turned into a lane which I did not recognize, I asked him curiously, where we were going. “Its a surprise! You’ll see!” It was when I saw this lane and I grinned.

It was a pretty lazy and relaxing day. We made lunch together and then I passed him the newspaper from where I was interviewed on Secondlife Relationships. We lounged around home and I saw the changes that he’s done. After I slept away my jetlag, cartcart took me out for a quiet dinner out at at restaurant called Il Cortile. I read somewhere that to never say no when someone asks you out for dinner in Italy. Mainly because of the really good food!

When we reached the place, there was a large range of food that you can choose from at the main table. There were those which I recognized, fritata with zucchini, potatoes with rosemary, roasted bell peppers, stuffed aubergine, all sorts of insalata and others. There was another table full of desserts. Tiramisu! Chocolate cake! Panna Cotta!

Yumness!

The next day, I joined cartcart with a couple of his friends. We drove to an area in Trastevere. We met Fabrizio first. He has been friends with cartcart since they were 8. I knew him beforehand from Secondlife and our chats on msn. He walked towards us and I was stunned momentarily when he kissed my face left and right. It was something that I wasnt used to. But its an Italian culture to do so between friends.

We went to an ice cream shop and I looked at the colourful ice cream being displayed and we decided to have an aperitif and gelato. I sat there completely mesmerized by cartcart’s and Fabrizio’s conversation. The Italian language really sounds melodic to me.

Fabrizio started to talk to me in Italian. I could understand parts of his sentences but I wasnt fluent enough to converse with him. I tried to use the phrase book that I carried with me but the conversation changed when Fabrizio and cart decided to ask me about Malay words instead! 🙂

Fabrizio had to leave soonafter. Cart and I decided to have a walk around the area before meeting up with his other friends. I liked walking around the area. Everthing seemed so peaceful and idyllic. There were people lounging around relaxedly. The temperature was noticably cooler than in Singapore.

We passed by a shoe shop and my eyes noticed an attractive pair of shoes. I looked closer.

Unbranded shoes and yet so expensive!

Gah! 146? is about $300 Singapore dollars! This wasnt even branded shoes even.*dies*

We came across a stand where magazines and newspapers were being sold. Cart wanted to buy the Secondlife Guide book. We were quite lucky as the stand was still operating at 8.30pm while most stands would have closed by 7.30pm.

A stand selling magazines and newpapers

We sat down on the bench and flipped though the book. It was the Italian version. I’ve seen the original version back in Singapore but it was nice to read together with cartcart as we recognized some of the residents whom were featured in the book.

The Secondlife Guidebook - Italian version

It wasnt long after that we saw Paolo and then Luigi soonafter. Paolo was another person whom I knew beforehand from Secondlife, while Luigi taught mathematics in a university.

We headed to a place called La camiceria. We ordered a variety of food. From appetizers such as Mozarella cheese with artichoke and ricotta cheese with honey.

Ricotta cheese with artichoke

To Funghi Pizza and Camicia Pizza. I’ve left the fork and the knife as a size comparison. Yes! This is the size of a personal pizza! The Camicia Pizza was interesting to me. In Italian, camicia means shirt. Cart tells me that the cherry tomatoes on top was supposed to be the buttons. The camicia pizza was supposed to be a play with the calzone pizza as in Italian, calzone means pants. Personally for me, calzone pizza resembles a giant sized epok-epok .

My funghi pizza. Look at the size of this personal portion

We ended with desserts of sbriciolata and tortino ai cioccolato. I listened to the conversation. I was tickled to hear to Paolo and Luigi speaking in english. They tend to add extra vowels in their words and sentences, giving it a rather adorable effect.

A picture of cart's tortino ai cioccolato

Paolo's sbriciolata

Cartcart also tells me of a Roman culture whereby people may sound rude, but it was for the spirit of fun. I listened while the three of them poked fun at each other, some moments being over the top.

Another thing that I observed was that the Italians had a slower pace of life when I noticed the topics that they talked about. They were more attentive to the things that I’d normally take for granted. One example – I remember cartcart and Fabrizio standing next to a tree, looking up and pointing for at least 10 minutes. I found out later that they had found a bird nest and were trying to find the birds. I dont know of any Singaporeans personally who did that! 😛

Paolo offered to take us to his home to see his cats and I said yes! I loved cats. When we went over, I was amazed to see three grown men being enthralled and completely entertained by two kittens.

Teri the cat

It was an interesting night.

Here’s a short clip of the day :

Le Sigh

These people got famous through Youtube

If you’ve been around youtube, you’ve probably heard of Esmee Denters a singing sensation from the Netherlands. A singing enthusiast, Esmee recorded her beautiful voice and put it up on youtube. Nine months later, she was signed up with the same label as Justin Timberlake.

When you think about it, there has been a number of people whom has gotten fame through youtube. Jessica Rose who plays the fictional character, Lonelygirl15 started out on youtube about a year ago. Presently, she has been casted to act alongside Lindsay Lohan. Personally for me though, the LG15 series has jumped the shark with the present storyline.

And not forgetting youtubers like Boh3m3, Bowiechick, Thewinekone, Happyslip as well as Singaporean Steven Lim whom has infused their own personal style into the videos that they have put up. Youtube is a great place to share, learn and glimpse into another person’s lifestyle. For the fame seekers out there, youtube could be a choice place to start 🙂

On the flipside however, youtube can be detrimental for some people. Remember the star wars kid? Some months after the video of him spinning around with a stick was put up, he was diagnosed with depression from the tauntings of schoolmates and dropped out of school. Prisoners of youtube is an excellent read about how youtube has effected the lives several people.

Personally for me, I think that what we upload online is up to our own perogative as long it is within social standards. And to watch how we behave in public because who knows, somewhere out there, someone could be filming us. In Singapore, we have a somewhat equivalent, Singapore Seen which shows some of the happenings, both good and bad around here.

As for me, I think I’ll just cash in on the bandwagon like Esmee. Who knows, what’ll happen 9 months from now, hehehe 😛

Dinner at the Manhattan Fish Market

Geri asked me out for dinner at the Manhattan Fish Market last night.

This was the first time that I’ve eaten here. Interestingly, there doesnt seem to be much publicity about this place. The only time when I heard about the Manhatan Fish Market was when fellow blogger, PniiWof wrote about it not too long ago.

The restaurant was nice and cosy. Geri thought that the place felt more upmarket. I thought that the reason could be because we were at Plaza Singapura where there were more well heeled people around. I spent quite a while thinking of what to order. There was a good range of varieties there.

Sizzling Louisiana Prawns

For our appetizer, we had the Sizzling Louisiana Prawns. I really liked the cream sauce. It was a nice mix of savoury and tang which made it perfect for dipping with the baguette bread that accompanied it.

For our main course, we shared a Manhattan Seafood Platter for two. The way that it was served was quite interesting. I was quite surprised to see the person who served us arrived with a flame blower and proceeded to torch our food.

Flame Blowing our Manhattan Seafood Platter

I suppose that this process was supposed to make it tastier than regular oven bake?

Manhattan Seafood Platter

Nevertheless, I liked the colourful array of our generous platter of Shrimp, Calamari, Mussels and Fish served on a bed of garlic rice and fries.

The garlic rice was delicious. I do love the savouriness of the calamari with the lovely herbs in it. I wish that it was juicier and tender though. Chewing on it was a little tough.

As for the rest, I’m quite neutral for the shrimp, the fish and the mussels. Though it tasted pretty good, it wasn’t anything to cheer about.

Nevertheless, I think its a nice place for seafood. A nice and cosy ambience and competitive prices. Geri and I spent about $25 each for our food and drinks. Quite worth the price.

The Osim Upapa - Ps. Geri is so skinny. I am jealous.

As a sidenote, after dinner, Geri and I chanced upon the Osim Upapa. Immediately we went to give it a try! Geri wanted to try out her new Nokia n73 and filmed this :

Ok. The real reason why I’m putting up that clip is because I’m very very very narcissistic and I like to look at myself 😛

Please dont feed the birds

Fumigate the mozzies

Not a fire, but a fumigation to kill mosquitoes. I saw the fumigation going on early this morning as I was on my way to work. The fumes exude a horrible smell if you have the misfortune of being near the smoke.

But the inconvenience is a small price to pay. Boon Lay, which is near the area where I am staying, is currently listed as a hotspot for Dengue. And this is quite alarming to me.

About 13 years ago, I had the dengue fever. I remember being hospitalised for it. My temperature shot up to above 40 degree celcius. Thankfully, I got better afterwards.

But when you think about it, the impact diseases such as dengue, SARS, foot and mouth diseases could have been lowered. People need to exercise more social awareness and personal hygine.

I dont believe that people are so oblivious towards it, its just that many of us are indifferent.

For example people feeding pigeons outside of their homes. These animals are scavengers and know how to find their own food without us. These people think that they are being kind to these animals. But the reality is, the more they feed these animals, the more they will breed. Eventually residents will complain about the bird droppings and the noise. In the end, these animals will be culled.

Having personally seen pigeons being poisoned, drugged, unable to fly away, drop off from their perch and then swept into a basket, their eyes blinking, dying a slow death was one of the saddest things that I’ve seen.

Now that the bird flu is striking again, I’m really concerned. If people wont learn from their past mistakes, it will be very difficult future for all of us.

The Vespa Club roadtrip to Malacca

My trip to Malacca was fantastic! Yesterday was the first time that I was riding out of Singapore and it was such a memorable experience, I would love for to do it again!

Welcome to Malacca

The Vespa Club, an enthusiast group which I joined last year organized an outing to Malacca last Sunday. As I’ve always wanted to experience riding overseas, I jumped at the chance. Malaysia was a great place to start because of its vast natural terrain, picturesque sights as well as wonderful food along the way.

As I slept at about 3 am the previous night, I woke up groggy when the alarm clock rang at 5.30 am. I was supposed to meet the gang at 6.30 am and was still deciding whether to go or no. At length I dragged myself out of bed and stuffed my passport and other necessary items and had a quick shower.

I reached the Jurong Bird park which was the designated meet-up point and saw that the others were there already. I was late! I tried to bribe everyone with the chocolates that I bought from the chocolate factory last Friday.

Kennyatemyburger and Moon_star peeking

Moon_star, who’s in the pink scooter, lead us to the Tuas second link immigration check point where we had our passports checked and paid S$0.60 using our cash card for our scooters to cross over. It was another RM$1.30 for the Malaysian vehicle toll later.

After the check, I took in the beautiful sights as we crossed the bridge connecting Singapore and Malaysia. It was gorgeous to see the rising sun coming out from the sea and into the blue skies. At times like these, I wished I had a helmet camera. I would love to show you the lovely sights I saw while on the road.

We stopped by Gelang Patah to meet up with the rest of the gang and have our breakfast together. In Malay, Gelang Patah translates to Broken Bracelet. I quickly exchanged my Singapore money to Malaysian money (1 SGD = 2.20 RM) and then I had Nasi Lemak and Teh Halia.

Roadster briefing after breakfast

After our breakfast, Roadster, who will be leading the group later on, briefed to us about the road that we will be travelling as well as cautioned us that because the travel would be long and monotonous, it is important for us to try to keep ourselves awake and entertained.

But first, we pumped petrol at the petronas petrol kiosk that was nearby. There is no Premium, 98 or 95 (and other different types of petrol). Here there were only two choices of oil. Petrol or diesel.

Its’ very different here. You’d have to pay in advance and the meter will not reset till the person has paid for his fuel at the counter. So if the person takes his time, or worse, drive away without paying, the next person will have to wait a very long time. After a while, the meter reset and I filled my tank. I paid about ten ringgit for the fill.

And then we started our journey. It was a very long ride. I kept myself entertained by listening to my MP3 player and taking in the view of the plantations. There were no commercial or housing buildings anywhere along the highway, only trees everywhere. We stopped only for some of us to refuel and for all of us to stretch our legs.

Here is a video of us at one of our stops :

Click here to watch in youtube

But it was really fun for me to ride in a procession with the vesporeans. We must have been a sight to behold with our colourful and eye catching scooter. Everywhere we go, there will be someone waving and shouting, “Vespa! Vespa!” at us. I saw that there were also other motorcycle group along the road. Even they were waving and giving us the thumbs up. I feel happy and proud.

Man taking pictures of our Vespas

After about 3 hours, we finally reached Malacca! It was already noon so it was uncomfortably hot. The gang went to have lunch at a famous Chicken Rice Ball restaurant. But as the place wasnt halal, I didn’t eat there. Roadster was really nice to accompany me for lunch as we searched for a suitable place to eat.

Selvam Indian Restaurant with yummy biryani

We stumbled upon an Indian restaurant and feasted on the delicious chicken biryani. Even though I wasn’t that hungry, I find myself polishing off the rice. It was so good!

After lunch, Roadster wanted to go shopping. So I took the chance to roam around by myself and take pictures. As Malacca was formerly colonised by the Dutch and the Portuguese, there were a number of landmarks here which had a European look.

Stadhuys building in Malacca

This is the Stadhuys building. Formerly a residence of the Dutch Governor and his deputy, now it is converted into a museum.

Church in Malacca

A Gothic church was built by the French priest.

Mana Laksa?

The colourful streets made me feel like I was walking back in time. There were loads of antique things and sights.

Wooden Clogs

Like these clogs. These shoes are memorable as they have a very loud “click clock” sound as you walk around in these. But they can hardly be found in Singapore any more.

Man handmaking a sweet

This man here is crafting a handmade sweet. He’d chisel off the hard candy made of sugar. You can hear him when he works and the loud sound of the clinking will attract many children.

Man making a cold dessert - cendol

While walking, I chanced upon a chendol shop. I love chendol! These cool dessert will surely cool you down in the warm weather and I love watching how the dessert gets prepared.

First the man will take a block of ice and puts it in the machine. The ice is then shaved into a container which is then layered with beautiful combination of coconut milk, gula melaka, red bean and jelly.

The Malaccan river

There was a river down the path that I was walking at and I admired the view. Just as I was daydreaming at how nice it would be to take a dip on this hot day, I saw something interesting …

Huge Lizard

Uh … I changed my mind.

Later on we grouped back together and rode around the Malaccan town and did a quick bout of shopping and then it was time to head back.

The way back home was easily one of the most stressful riding experience that I’ve ever had. Somewhere along the middle of the journey, traffic got congested and got heavier as we went along. And then the skies got darker and angrier and the rain poured down.

I always get nervous at times like these as visibility is low and tempers are high. Accidents always happen on the roads when there’s a heavy downpour. And true enough, there were at least 3 accidents that I saw along the way home.

Every motorist wanted to go back home so much so that they squeezed through everywhere! Even the cars and buses cut into the shoulder lane!

This journey was very physically challenging indeed. My back and legs felt sore from all the riding. It was already nightfall and the only illumination was from our vehicles. I definitely wouldn’t want to be stuck here alone!

I was wet, cold, tired and miserable. My mind started to play tricks on me.

After what seemed to be forever, I was really grateful for the quick stops at the R&R along the way so that I could get warmed up again. A warm drink and a stretch of the legs and we were off. An hour later, we were back in Gelang Patah again for our final stop and dinner.

List of burger patties in Malaysia

I couldn’t decide on what to eat. In the end, I decided to have a burger. Cerealz seemed shocked when I translated the words of the banner at the burger stall :

Arnab = Rabbit

Kasawari = Ostrich

Rusa = Deer

I tried the rabbit burger just to see how it tasted like. Interestingly enough, it tasted like chicken.

After dinner, we pumped petrol for the final time and then headed back to the customs then we said our goodbyes to each other. By the time I reached home, the first thing I did was to head to the bathroom to get out of my dirty and wet clothes and have a nice warm shower and then collapsed in bed and snoozed immediately after that. I was that tired!

I realise that I didn’t buy much things in Malacca. I still had a little souvenir though.

Got a sunburt!

Wow, what a tan! But now all my limbs feel stiff and my skin feels like a radiation effect. I’m sunburnt!

Trying out Granado Espada – a MMORPG

Early saturday morning, the company where I worked at had a meet so that we can have a hand trying out a game. The company was promoting Granado Espada, a MMORPG for use in creative education. The game was mentioned non violent and promoted teamwork.

Granado Espada

I met Liling and Mus, a Multimedia Educator for River Valley Primary and together, we tried to get ourselves used to the game.

Granado Espada

When you start, there are a number of characters that you can choose from. Among them, I chose a wizard, a fighter and an elementalist. You could play all three characters simultaneously in the game.

You’ll start in a tutorial area where you learn to get used to the interface. After your basic tutorial, you’d be required to do some tasks from the non-player-characters to gain more experience and items.

Granado Espada

One of the initial task that I had to do was to deliver lunch for the Queen’s guard. That quest was pretty easy to do. But like all RPG games, the more you complete a quest, the harder the quests that you will be given in time.

Some of the nice things about the game is that it had really nice looking graphics. I like how detailed the characters looked like. And how absolutely lush the environment was. Plus the background music was really nice to listen to as you explore and fight your enemies.

Granado Espada

Interestingly, the game reminded me of Ragnarok, another MMORPG that I used to play. It was similar as the range of characters are comparative. The type of monsters in the environment was similar too. The main difference was that Ragnarok was more 2D and that the characters were more cute.

Ragnarok

Here I am in Ragnarok. I was a girl magician with a cute little bow in my head fighting with my assasin friend. It was fun to play but I stopped playing after a while when the game started to be subscription based.

To be honest, I am not much of a gamer. Games like these can get quite stressful when I’m required to do a quest and especially when my characters are fighting and nearly dying.

Granado Espada - Dead

But at the same time RPG’s can get rather mundane after a while and I can get quite bored of the monotony of killing things after a while.

I’m sure that RPG’s are great. Apart from the gameplay, I’ve seen some spectacular machinimas that are created through these type of games.

The sad thing is that games like these can be quite an addiction as one can really get immersed in it. I find myself saying, “I’ll stop when I get to level 13” or “I’ll stop when I finish this quest” and before you know it, you’ve spent quite an amount of time on the game.

That’s why I’m up at this time. Its 3.10 am right now at this point of writing. I should have been in bed hours ago.

Get your Comic Life free for Windows

Updated : This offer is no longer available but you can try Chogger.com which is similar to it.

When Vespa Meets Bajaj

Just in case you were wondering, the Vespa is an Italian made scooter while the Bajaj is Indian made 😉

I used the software Comic Life to make the motorcycle comic above there. I’ve always wanted this software but at the time, Comic Life is available only for the Mac.

But for now, Comic Life is available for windows. It’s in beta, so you might come across some bugs. For me, I didn’t have much problems with it and it’s really easy to use. However it might take up quite a bit of memory and one small thing that I didn’t like was that the export picture quality doesn’t look very sharp.

But who’s complaining when its free! You can download it and then have fun playing with Comic Life.
