The Nokia N810 – perfect for skyping

Personally, I’ve always had an affinity to Nokia – My past 3 phones itself being the 3310, the 7260 and currently I’m using the 7390 of the L’Amore series.

Nokia series that Rinaz uses

When I was given the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet on loan for a some weeks thanks to Supriya of Text100, I took to it like fish to water.

At first glance, it’s a really beautiful gadget with its grey blue exterior. Switching it on, it did not take too long to get used to the interface. Even though it uses a linux operating system, it was pretty easy that anyone who knows how to use a handphone would be able to handle it.

Being pocket sized, I find myself carrying this gadget often and especially to events when I could do live microblogging using twitter or plurk.

It has to be clarified though, that the N810 is not a handphone. There is no slot for a sim card. Thus I was perplexed on how to connect to the internet on demand. But I am pretty sure that it was possible, as I’ve seen youtube clips of people being able to connect to gprs maps using the device.

Hence, the only way that I could connect during this review was to rely on wifi connections. But so far it hasn’t been much of a problem for me as I have wireless connection at home and fortunately for me, wiress@sg was rather reliable at the places that I patronized.

And though the N810 is sometimes compared to the popular UMPCs, I feel that it would be like comparing it apples to oranges as they are both in different leagues.

One of the notable part of the N810 is that it shares a developers website where you could download softwares coded by people who uses the maemo platform, which the N810 uses. I love open source! It was a nice touch to be able to find additional softwares like games as well as applications like pidgin so that I was able to chat on msn and gtalk.

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet Reviewed by Rinaz

However, one bugboo to take note of is that at this point of writing, N810’s latest operating system – The Diablo OS2008does not support Pidgin. Personally, I find it a shame as instant messaging was a function that I use very frequently.

And another thing that bugged me was that although it played youtube videos well, trying to play clips on the more graphics intensive vimeo was laggy, making it uncomfortable to view.

Regardless what I liked best about the N810 was the sound quality. Both the speakers and microphone was excellent as I could hear and speak with no problem at all. Thus it was a joy for me to use the skype function on the N810, which probably what will make me miss the N810 the most.

What would make it better would be if there were a video-conference function in skype. And at this point of time, there is none and I don’t think that there will be in the future.

The device being small, I could just chuck it next to me and lie down comfortably on the bed while talking to Cartcart. His voice was comforting that inevitably, I’d be fast asleep a few minutes into the conversation.

I haven’t been doing any late night skyping anymore since returning the review unit. I’ts not easy to lug my desktop to bed!

Anyways below is a quick overview on the interface as well as its different functions :

My apologies for the quality of the video. It was 4am at the time of recording and I was plagued with the flu. But such a sexeh voice I have there! šŸ˜›

Help! I bought too much make up!

I was a completely well adjusted young adult till recently I’ve gone completely bonkers!

My, what big eyes you have

It all started innocently with Wishbone was recommending some cosmetics samples from Pure Luxe. I did some research on it, there were many good comments about it – especially this Rainbow Eyeshadow Tutorial, which impressed me.

I picked up the courage to order just a few items online. And this was what came in the mailbox some while after :

Rinaz Pure Luxe Haul

Later on, Sylvia posted about some links about free minerals sample kits which intrigued me. I ordered a sample kit from Everyday Minerals.

Everyday Minerals

After using it for a while, I found out that I enjoyed using them – my skin took it well and I liked how natural it looked on me. And before I knew it, I started to click on the purchase button. And look at what came to me some weeks later.

Goodness!

And on top of that, I’ve also discovered LiveJournal sprees! I recentlyĀ Ā got fascinated by this very colourful 88 Eye-shadow Palette and decided to get one for myself.

88 Eyeshadow Palette

The day I got the palette, even though I was not skilled at eye make up, I had a blast of a time trying out different eye looks. It was so exciting to me. I feltĀ like a little girl given with a lot of colours to play with!

Rinaz tries the 88 eyeshadow palette

And for some reason, I was itching to try something new. I decided that I wanted a neutral palette this time. However, the one at Coastal Scents were a tad too expensive when I calculated the dollar conversion as well as the shipping charges.

It was only when I stumbled uponĀ a seller from ebay. Based in Hong Kong, she was said to be the manufacturer of the palette. So I’m getting it direct!

28 Neutral Eyeshadow Palette

This is my new 28 neutral eye-shadow palette. Isn’t this absolutely gorgeous? I love playing with all of my new colours! It’s so much fun!

At this point of time, some of my loves would be Pureluxe’s Nymph Blush as well as the Nymph-o-mania lip colour for its healthy, natural, yet sexeh shade šŸ™‚

Rinaz and Spai Duhz

Unfortunately now, I have so much mekap now that my side table could hardly contain all of them that its spilling to the floor! Definitely no moreĀ cosmeticsĀ for me for now.

At least not until my next obsession.

I love Flight of the Conchords!

It was an experience to remember being in the HBO office!

I was invited by Sumin of the PR agency text100 for a preview of HBO’s comedy. Having enjoyed HBO’s shows, notably, Sex and the City, I happily confirmed my attendance.

Nadnut, Jerrick, Mus and Rinaz with Sex and the City

It was a long ride all the way to the HBO office. We recognized the building when we spotted the large satellites on top of the tall building. When we reached the floor, we were welcomed warmly by Sumin. It was an impressive place to be. There were loads of televisions everywhere. My eyes were attracted by the numerous shows that was playing simultaneously.

Rinaz at the HBO office

Our hosts brought us, as well as the other invited bloggers on a tour around the office where we explored the different departments. There was a green room, where one of the guests acted out and one of the engineers keyed in a background to the footage. There was a sound room where Jerrick’s voice was used as a sample sound for a tv commercial. And we were also brought to the control room where the there was one staff there that was manning the broadcast, LIVE!

Rinaz and Mus at the HBO office

Being someone who likes watching as well as editing videos myself, it was fascinating for me to watch the different processes. Unfortunately, due to security reasons, I cant publish any images from the production area. Regardless, there are loads of information on the internet about this.

After the tour, we were seated in a screening room where were previewed an upcoming comedy series called, “Flight of the Concords”. Apparently, the show roused quite an interest in the US.

Flight of the Concords
Thats Jermaine on the left and Bret on the right

In a nutshell, Flight of the ConchordsĀ a quirky show whichĀ revolves around two artists who sings parodies of their day to day situation. The story seems to remind me a little of the gem of a show by MTV called, 2gether which parodies the obsession of boybands during the 90’s.

It canĀ a little hard to get what the actors were saying, due to their New Zealand accent. But once you’ve gotten a hang of it, Flight of the concords is a really fun watch. There was a scene where Bret refused to play in a gig with Jermaine and eventually, he got replaced with a cassette tape.

Or the scene where Jermaine wanted some of his money back from his manager :

Jemaine: Murray, we need some money.

Murray: Oh, okay. How much? (fetches a lock box from a drawer) We’ve got four dollars in here.

Jemaine: I thought we had ten dollars?

Murray: This box cost six.

Among all the characters, here was one actress in particular, who was familiar to me –Kristen Schaal, who also acted in the immensely funny internet series, Horrible People – a parody of soap operas.

Jerrick and a friend eating a hotdot at Flight of the Concords

I sure am looking forward to just plonk down and zone out in front of the telley to watch the next episodes of Flight of the Concords! And with that, I’ll leave you to one of my favourite music clip by Flight of the Concords – Foux da fafa :

Ramen Ten – Yummy Japanese Food

I’ve always liked Japanese food, hence when I found out that a colleague liked to eat Japanese Food, she recommended me to Ramen Ten. Thus recently I was at Ramen Ten with fellow bloggerĀ Mintea, and all in all, we liked our lunch very much!

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

The place

Ramen Ten is situated in Far East Plaza, a popular hangout with youths in Orchard Road. It can be a little disorienting being surrounded by youths donning the latest fashion trends there.

Regardless, when we reached Ramen Ten, it was a bright and cheery place – the walls were decorated with modern urban themed murals. The furniture was pretty simple with white plastic chairs and wooden tables.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

There were a number of people already there, mostly groups of friends, couples and families.

The Service

Prepare to be greeted very loudly as you step into the restaurant itself – every time a customer walks in, the staff will shout out an energetic “Arigato Gozaimas!” – for me, I thought that it brought a sense of bustling energy about the place.

As we sat down by the friendly waitress, we poured over the menu and took a while to decide what to order. I looked at the glass panel across me and saw the cooks busy at work, tossing and frying their food over the fire.

For some reason, the food that we ordered took much longer than usual, which alarmed Mintea and me. We saw other customers that arrived later than us getting their food earlier. Mintea informed me that she’s never had such an experience before, having eaten here several times.

Thankfully, a helpful waitress noticed us and ushered the cooks to hasten our food for us.

The Food

But the food was worth waiting for! For appetizers, we had sushi.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

The one on top was my spicy fried ebi maki ($3.90) deep fried prawn sushi which was really hot – being covered with chili flakes. But it was really tasty to me and I liked it a lot.Ā The ones at the bottom were deep fried maki ($2.90) which were like my sushi, without the chili flakes – Mintea liked it very much šŸ˜€

After our appetizers, we had our main dish. This was Mintea’s Tempura, grilled salmon, Chawanmushi bento set ($15.90)

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

Mintea said that she enjoyed it. For someone who doesn’t usually enjoy eating salmon, she liked it as it was not as fishy tasting. She also enjoyed her tempura as well as the chawanmushi – which was basically steamed mixed egg.

However, Mintea thought that it was the soup that marred the bento set, with it being sweet rather than salty.

This was my Super Spicy Ramen ($7.90)

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

This was really tasty to me. It was a unique taste of seafood stock, cream and chicken meat and a whole load of heat! My mouth was tingling with each bite and I finished my bowl of ramen.

About a week ago, bro and I went to Ramen Ten and ordered for ourselves :

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

Beef Ramen which bro loved very much. Again, it was an interesting taste of milky, seafood stock with cooked, marinated beef ramen. It was a unique and tasty at the same time.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

As there was a promotion of free soda with the bento set at the time, I had the mixed sushi and cold ramen bento set. ($14.90) It was Ā a delight in the mouth. The deep fried prawn sushi were lovely and crispy, although I found it a little strange to have mayonnaise on top of it. The chawanmushi was like an eggy hidden treasure with bits of chicken, prawn and crabstick as you dig into it.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

The salmon was extremely tender that I didn’t even need to chew on it much – I slurped it down contentedly.

I did have some issue with my bento set though. I thought that the plate for soy sauce was so tiny. I could hardly dip my sushi in it without my sushi crumbling. And my cold ramen was rather tasteless. Is it meant to be that way? If it wasn’t for the accompanying soup, it would be rather boring to eat.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

Regardless, the both of us liked our food a lot. Although I can’t vouch for the authenticity of the food, I really liked the food here and I think that this is a place worth going to.

Ramen Ten - Far East Plaza, Singapore

6 thumbs fingers up!

Have you watched the Teenage Textook Movie?

When Yuhui plurked about catching the Teenage Textbook movie, I was intrigued. The Teenage Textbook was a book that I enjoyed immensely through my school years. Although I have no watched the movie before, I think that it’ll be quite an experience to watch the book come to life!

Teenage Textbook

In a nutshell, the teenage textbook movie revolved around 4 main characters, Mui Ee, a smart but shy girl, her best friend, Sissy Song, the popular school belle, Chung Kai, who secretly harbors a crush on Mui Ee, and his best friend, Hok Sean.

As my younger sister has read the book and has not watched the movie either, I thought that it would be a great time to bond together in a girls night out šŸ™‚

Old School at Mount Sophia, Singapore

We reached Old School at about 8pm and although I’ve been here before, I’m always charmed at how elegant the place was and impressed that it was converted from an actual school!

We chose our seats and sat down on the plush seats in the Sinema hall, and waited for the movie to start. I sat there lapping up each moment.

The movie was lovely – it was funny, it was witty, and I thought that the cast had good chemistry with each other.

Teenage Textbook

The storyline was good albeit it was more of a condensed version of both the teenage textbook and teenage workbook. There were a number of scenes that were taken out, such as the lisping guy who keeps calling Sissy Song as “Thythy Thong” as well as the scene when Tom D’Cruise tried to make his moves on Mui Ee.

But that was a problem with many book to movie transition as different people always have different perceptions as to what was important to be kept in the movie and which would be cut away due to constraints.

Teenage Textbook

And granted that the quality of the film was rather grainy, and that there were a number of references which was outdated, it was understandable as the movie was produced in 1998.

I had a blast recognizing the old “ship” currency, looking at popular spots like Orchard and Holland Village as they were 10 years ago as well as reminiscing about the days when Mark Richmond was deejaying for Perfect Ten.

Teenage Textbook

When the movie ended, out comes Adrian Tan, the author, and Phillip Lim, the director to come to talk about the movie as well as a questions and answer session. I was so floored! I always feel a sense of privilege when meeting a creator.

And while the both of them were bantering, the audience could sense how at ease they were with each other.

Adrian Tan and Phillip Lim on Teenage Textbook

I learnt that Adrian Tan was a lawyer, which was an interesting fact for me to note since going to the Kevin Matthew’s performance, and he was a lawyer too! Proving that lawyers are not necessarily fuddy duddy people šŸ˜›

I also found out that Phillip Lim gave out directing lessons around the time when he was creating the Teenage Textbook Movie to supplement his income. Turns out that one of his students was Royston Tan, an emerging and acclaimed director in Singapore.

And in the end, I had a picture with the author, the director and two of the main casts in the show. Oh my. I cant believe that I was actually took a picture as well as had a short talk to Adrian Tan. He was a very eloquent and friendly person and I was so in awe and was very excited to the point of almost being delirious.

rinaz with cast of Teenage Textbook Movie

As if you could not see from my huge grin photographed next to Adrian Tan, Phillip Lim, Randall Tan and Melody Chen. I’m embarrassed to say that I was starstruck šŸ˜›

All in all, I enjoyed myself tremendously and I think that it was an evening to remember šŸ™‚

I was cheated by a bus tout in Kuala Lumpur

I had the most harrowing experience ever in Kuala Lumpur. And I hope that you did not go through what I did. So I’m posting this to let everyone know and hopefully learn from our experience.

My mum and I spent the weekend in Kuala Lumpur to get some items for the wedding in an area called Masjid India, where there were plentiful of Malay wedding paraphernalia to be found.

After buying our items, we were ready to go home and we headed to Puduraya, which is a very famous bus interchange in Kuala Lumpur.Ā When we went up to the ticketing counter, located on the second floor, there were about 20 touts hovering around us, hassling us to buy their tickets.

I asked them how much the tickets costs. First it was RM$35. Which I thought was really expensive as the standard price was RM $25.Ā But after using their walkie talkies, they then suddenly raisedĀ the price to RM $40.

There was this female tout who suddenly grabbed my arm and told me sarcastically not to be fussy and just buy her $40 Ringgit ticket as everyone else was selling it at the price.

Surrounded in a chaotic situation, I got annoyed and shot back at her, “Its my money! I’ll spend it how I like!” And in the corner, I heard someone shout out $60 Ringgit as a ticket price. That’s so outrageous!

There were a number of ticket counters – about 60 altogether. My mum and I walked over to one counter that we knew was legitimate – The Causeway Express. It was 2 pm at the time.

Unfortunately,Ā the 2.30 pm coach was sold out and the next earliest coach was at 5.30 pm.

Not wanting to wait for 3 hours, we had to relent and buy one from another counter where most of the touts were swarming. I found a ticket being sold at $35 for a bus leaving at 3.15 and at the specified time, my mum and I went to the platform and a coach came in. According to the ticket, it had the bus number and I was supposed to enter it.

But there was a man at the entrance and after checking our ticket, he said that both mum and I were not allowed to enter. He told us that it was not our bus and that the next bus would be arriving soon.Ā I was surprised but we waited anyway as there were other passengers who were in the same predicament as us.

Another bus went by and once again the same thing, someone checked our ticket and would not let us in, saying that our bus will be the next bus.

The same thing repeated over the next hour.

One hour! I was losing my temper and started to show my displeasure at one of the touts. They were rude and extremely unprofessional. They shouted at us, told us to wait and never gave an apology or pacified us for being late.

All of a sudden, we were herded to another platform and told to wait for the coach there. I was highly suspicious. What wereĀ we doing there? Why are we following them? Didn’t the ticket say that we were supposed to wait at this platform?

Eventually, there was a group of about 40 people which formed and we were heardedĀ outside of the depot and walked towards where a coach was. Why here?

But at the time, I was grateful that we finally had a bus to sit on. It was already 6 pm. We had been waitingĀ for the bus for over 3 hours!

But just as I was getting comfortable on the bus, there were two guys with the walkie talkies entered, checked our tickets againĀ and said, this ticket is 35 ringgit. Seats in this bus costs 40 ringgit. You need to give another 5 ringgit.

I was EXTREMELY upset.

You made us wait for 3 hours and we still have to pay YOU more money? You should be compensating us instead!

Instead, he spouted some sort of bullshit about oil prices being expensive and that the bus needs at least $1500 Ringgit for its journey and that the bus will not move if he does not meet the amount.

There was a person sitting in front of me who could not tolerate it and the both of them escalated in a shouting match. Eventually, the ticket-checker challenged the passenger to meet his boss and grabbed his arm and the both of them very nearly fought in the bus.

But in the end, being pressured to go home, unwillingly they topped up the amount.

My mum was being very brave. She calmly told the ticket-checkers to settle it among themselves as they both has checked our tickets repeatedly and has never mentioned anything about the ticket being $40 and that they were the ones who lead us here.

I heard the guy mention to the other guy, “Lets just forget about the ulat (illegal-profit) for these ones”

And that was when I realised that we have been conned. How can it be? After all, we bought ourĀ tickets from a legitimate counter! All sorts of thoughts went through my mind wildly.

After the long bus journey back to Larkin (a bus interchange in Johore Bahru) I noticed that we did not enter the bus interchange either. I was surprised. The passenger sitting next to me then explained that unlicensed drivers don’t enter the bus interchange as they do not want to be caught.

So we’ve were in an unlicensed bus. We were cheated! We were sold fake tickets by a counter and handled by a tout!

I’ve travelled by coachĀ a number of times before but this must have been the most incredibly worst ever experience that I’ve ever had while travelling in Malaysia. I really don’t want to go through this again!

But its made us all the wiser. And I hope that you don’t experience the same thing that we went through. So if you are travelling to Kuala Lumpur, my advice to you is to always book a legitimate bus service and get your tickets in advance before you leave.

Some of the credible services a

  • Causeway Link
  • Transnational
  • Mara Liner

Colleagues has also adviced me to take the coach from IMM or from Jurong Point and they allow two way travel.

Do NOT at any circumstances ever take the bus from Delima Express nor buy from the counter 93. The bus that we took has the plate number BGU 3615.

Even Malaysians are tired of the Puduraya Touts as seen in these blogposts here and here.Ā If you know anyone who’s travelling to Malaysia by coach, please feel free to forward this post to them.

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

Last week, I was at the Singapore Garden Festival. After missing the first one in December 2006, I told myself that I should make an effort to view the one this year

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

When I reached Suntec City, there were already quite a number of people there – presumably after work, like me. I made my payments at the counter and after getting my ticket, I entered the exhibition hall.

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

And what I saw just floored me. There were heaps of beautiful sights in front of me. From photography of flowers, to the many landscapes and fantasy gardens from the different designers all over the world.

Singapore Garden Festival

Here is one done by a China representative, with a very apt display for the Beijing Olympics. Not that much flowers are used in this display, making it looks more zen than garden-like.

Lavender Fields at Singapore Garden Festival 2008

Here is something kind of cool that we hardly see in real life because of our tropical climate. A lavender field! It seemed to go on and on and I desperately wanted to sit in the middle and just enjoy the beauty of it all. Too bad it was behind a glass and that visitors aren’t allowed to enter inside.

Marilyn Monroe - Singapore Garden Festival 2008

A Marilyn Monroe picture made of potted plants.

There were plentiful of displays there to be seen there but there were two displays in particular that moved me. One of them was this one which depicted the beautiful rural charm of China.

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

Personally, I think that this picture does not do it justice because when I saw it, I just had to stop for a while and just stand there for a few minutes. It was so serene and breathtaking. Just listening to the water flowing in the pond and the koi swimming made me feel so relaxed.

Singapore Garden Festival 2008

And here is the other side of the display. With the little details such as the tea cups and the wheat grinder, it brought out the charm and the authenticity, momentarily bringing me to rural China. It was so beautiful!

And another display which I loved heaps was this one entitled Glendalough by anĀ American designer. Its gorgeous and I felt my heart sigh when looking at the display. How can anyone not?

Singapore Garden Festival - Glendalough

To say that this looks charming would make it unjustified. This is what faerie tales are made of, with the greenery, the little pond and the stone toadstool and especially the little stone chapel. I love it!

There is a story of how the designer of this display was inspired by how easily nature can take away man’s ambitions and beautifully make it part of her own work.

Glendalough - Singapore Garden Festival

It was said that the designer proposed to his then girlfriend in a place which looked like this in Glendalough, Ireland.

There is something about fresh flowers that makes me feel happy. My only issue about the event was that, whatever illusion I had being part of the display was quickly faded with the amount of people that visited there.

Singapore Garden Festival

It’s hard to imagine being in Ireland with other people snapping around and posing! My other issue is that we could not touch or interact with the displays. I really would have loved to bury my face in the flowers or feel it next to my skin at the very least.

Regardless, I enjoyed myself tremendously. It was an evening well spent šŸ™‚

Here is a quick video of two of the displays that I liked a lot :

To the caller who suggested that the Anthem be changed to English

I was listening to the Talkback segment on 938live and the topic of the day was “Are Singaporeans disrespectful to the National Anthem?” and a few minutes later, I heard you call in this morning to air your views.

Singapore Flags

You said that the National Anthem was hard to understand and because it was in Malay, not everyone would appreciate it. You also suggested that the National Anthem should be changed to English.

But isn’t it such a drastic change to have the National Anthem, sung in the official language changed after 43 years? Would it really be the best solution to change it to English?

But true, that its possible that throughout the years after school, that its easy to forget.

So, here is my part in sharing with you the National Anthem as well as the translation. After all, we all do need reminders sometimes šŸ˜‰
