A year after losing 10kgs

Hi everyone!

It has been about a year since I’ve published losing more than 10kgs. Since then, I’ve managed to keep my weight more or less quite stable since then mostly thanks to my half marathon training earlier this year.

rinaz.net

It’s just that after the event, I started to neglect my exercises (it was exhausting after all) but still ate the same way like I was still training. Before I knew it, I started to feel this constant, uncomfortable bloating (which is also a side effect of the folic acid pills that I’m taking) and looking at the scales, I was horrified. It wasn’t such a dramatic increase, but yikes! Not good!

rinaz.net

I really don’t want to go back as how I was before. And the easiest way to lose fats is to watch what you eat. So I downloaded myfitnesspal on my phone to track the things that I’ve been eating all these while and investigate what I’ve been doing wrong. I don’t believe in dieting, or denying yourself from what you love to eat but I do believe in eating in moderation.

rinaz.net

(A lot of pizza huh?)

It was quite enlightening to find out that one slice of pizza is about 300 calories and on a normal day, I’d usually have 4 slices … Hmm … I see why I’ve been putting on weight ๐Ÿ˜›

rinaz.net

Of course, I don’t think that this app is 100% accurate, but it does give you a visual idea of what you’re consuming. So this week I’ve been watching my food intake and have been trying to eat lesser processed food as possible (it’s easier when you’re a housewife and you can control what you eat) and I’m glad to see that I’m back to my regular weight in a surprisingly short time.

rinaz.net

(Biologico means organic in Italian. I don’t really care about organic food, but this one was the house brand, and thus cheaper :P)

But it’s hard though, when you’re eating out and people keep piling on food for you to eat – the things that you don’t want to consume in the first place and get all huffy and insisting when you try to refuse. Weighing myself the next day is always in trepidation. I don’t like when my weight goes all yo-yo. Sometimes I feel like they are sabotaging my progress but I know that people means well. I just need to remember to keep calm and not react emotionally as I tend to do.

rinaz.net

(I got this time ago, but I don’t use the recipes but I like to see the pictures … ehm! Speaking of which, is it even possible for people to watch their diet while in a Sicilian household?)

Apart from food intake, exercising and being active is also very important. I enjoy running and how good my body feels after that. As it is Summer and is getting uncomfortably warm even at 9am, so for the past few weeks I’ve been waking up at about 6am and been doing short runs almost every day. It’s very bright outside by this time as the sun rises at about 5.30. But there will hardly be any traffic and hardly anyone roaming around and thus it’s much more comfortable for me going about in the cooler temperature.

rinaz.net

I like this routine. I’d reach home sweaty and that’s the best time to get a shower. Cold water+warm sticky body = shiokness! And after that, I can start the day proper. I’d like to continue this routine till Ramadan (less than two weeks to go!) and then pick it up again after the fasting month because I’ve decided to run for the 15km event in Singapore. I hope that I can make it! Haha! Jules said that she’d join me, so that’s such a pleasant surprise ๐Ÿ™‚

(I also hope that the haze situation will stabilize too. Our poor Malaysian neighbours had to declare a state of emergency when the PSI level went up to 700!)

Anyway, that’s about it. Nothing much to update as I’m more or less the same as I am last year ๐Ÿ˜›

Sidenote : Daphne and I look very different now compared to the picture of us in this post and I’m very proud of her! Cart says the old us could be our cases. Haha!

Speaking of which, it’s Cart’s birthday today! Happy birthday my beloved ๐Ÿ™‚

A new top for 1 euro!

To continue my under 10 euro project, another great bancarelle location is right next to the Eur-Fermi metro station (the blue line) and it’s wonderful as it is large and opens from the morning all the way till about sunset.

I scored myself this dress for 1 euro! One! I kid you not. As always, I liked the print, and trying it on, I liked how flowy and swishy it is.

rinaz.net

Probably an odd thing to notice, but I also admired how neat and well made the stitching is. Very very clean. I am not that skilled yet.

rinaz.net

You could tell that someone loved this dress a lot before this was sold at the bancarella, because I noticed quite a fair bit of hand stitching at the sides. So I feel a little torn to have it cut up (Hey, accidental pun!) Heck, it doesn’t even look bad on me as it is!

But I told myself to stop the cycle of collecting clothes, only to feel bad about cutting it, and then stuffing it in the cupboard.

So I strengthened myself, took a pattern from my favourite magazine and put some weights on top of the dress to flatten it …

rinaz.net

And here goes nothing! I tell you, as I started cutting, I felt really really bad! But there’s no turning back now!

rinaz.net

And here is what’s left of my previously flowy, kinda princess-y dress. Poor thing. I had to constantly remind myself that it’s only 1 euro and I can try to get more of them if I wanted. Better than spending 70 euro.

rinaz.net

Then with the cut material, I folded the edges and ironed them, to make stitching more manageable.

rinaz.net

Added some quick running-stitching to put the edges in place and started sewing. Here we go (On hindsight, I wish I knew how to do seaming, to prevent the edges from fraying)

rinaz.net

And a couple of hours later, I’m done! I don’t think that it’s very well made, but I felt rather happy with my handiwork.

rinaz.net

And as always, its camwhore time! Hahaha!

rinaz.net

I’m so proud of myself for sewing this!

Below, I call this, the half-half-pigeon yoga pose.

rinaz.net

I love how the top has an adjustable neck, so you could tighten the ribbon or loosen it to fit your body. And think it’s great for the hot summer that we are experiencing right now.

Whee!

rinaz.net

So what do you think of this upcycling project? Awesome, no? I’m not sure if I’d wear it out much, so I’m contemplating on giving it away.

Nevertheless, I can’t wait to try to do the next one! ๐Ÿ™‚

I made a dress for under 5 euro!

I managed to make a dress all by myself! Sort of. Hahaha! And I’ll explain to you soon.

While my bestie was here in Rome, I took her to see the big mercato near my home. It opens every Wednesday and Friday mornings and here, you could get a lot of household things ranging from fresh produce, kitchen utensils, decorations and whatnots.

rinaz.net

The bit that I like a lot would have to be the bancarelle where pre-loved clothes, and sometimes even new branded clothes are sold, usually for 10 euro and below. I got this awesome scarf for example, not too long ago here for 50 cents!

If you’re interested to visit this mercato, it’s located right next to the Tor di Valle stop. And the easiest way of getting here is probably to take the Metro B to Piramide and then take the train heading to Cristoforo Colombo.

So remember the last time when I tried to sew my own skirt, but it turned out to be a disaster? So my plan was to be ala NDAD and experiement with pre-loved clothes. So I was rummaging through the bancarelle when I saw a print that I liked a lot.

rinaz.net

Soo purrdy! It looks quite Laura Ashley-ish and it was only 3 euro!

rinaz.net

Putting it on, I’m surprised that it actually fits pretty well. so there wasn’t that much adjustments to be done. But it was only later when Cart saw me with the dress on and noticed how roomy the tummy area was and asked, “Is that a maternity dress?”

So I checked the label, and it says, “Something mamma”. Turns out that I got a maternity dress. Hahaha! I’m not pregnant, but no matter. I think the print is really beautiful.

rinaz.net

But my only big problem with it was the 80s shoulder pads. So using a seam ripper

rinaz.net

Off it goes! And now I have new pincushions!

rinaz.net

I really like the sort of sweetheart neckline, and would like to highlight it. So I got this 5 meter piping for 1.50 euro at the same mercato. Not bad!

rinaz.net

Pin it in place before starting to sew …

rinaz.net

But sadly all the layers was a tad bit too thick for my sewing machine to handle, so I had to stitch it by hand, and it took a little bit longer than usual. I don’t know if it looks well finished, but you don’t see it anyway from far away! Hahaha!

rinaz.net

Some hours later and … Tada! Finished! I can’t wait to put it on!

rinaz.net

Yeah! Camwhoring time! I paired my dress with a skinny belt, shoes I got from a sale donkey years ago and a simple bracelet.

rinaz.net

The red piping really brings out the dress.

rinaz.net

Total cost of dress = 4.50 euro! Yay! I’m so happy!

Of course, I could remove the belt and it’ll still look like a pretty spiffy maternity dress. Although I prefer not to think too much about pregnancy and get my hopes up ๐Ÿ™‚

rinaz.net

So yeah, what do you think of my upcycling project? Pretty awesome yeah? I’m pretty happy with myself! And let me know if you would like to see more posts like this!

Whee!

Visiting an outlet shop in Firenze

My best friend Hema stayed with us for about a week and a half and we decided to go on a trip to Tuscany and Florence ๐Ÿ™‚

And thus, last weekend, we went on a long road trip. About 200 km away from Rome and it took us about two hours just to reach theย outlet shop. Thank goodness there was Cart with us. I think that I’d be very stressed out if I had to drive there on my own. You could also take a train+bus/cab combo if you plan to only spend time there.

The first stop that we went to was in a place called ‘The Space’ where it holds the brands Prada and Miu Miu together.

rinaz.net

It is a very nondescript looking building, so you’d be forgiven if you’d think that you were in the wrong place. There wasn’t a crowd when we reached there, so I reckon we were lucky as I’ve read that only 100 customers are allowed in the building at a time and the rest may have to wait 30 mins to an hour to enter.

As soon as you enter, you will be given a ticket, which you hang on for reserving the item that you’ve picked.

In all honesty, I was quite uncomfortable there. It may be an outlet shop, but my heart was jumping wildly, looking at the prices. A lot of the bags were 200 euro and above but they didn’t even list the ‘before’ prices for comparison so that I’d at least feel better at looking at the savings.

Plus, a few of their clerks are so snobby. I touched a bag, which looked similar to my purple bag and was about to show how it works to Hema, when I heard a shriek, “Madam!” and she promptly snatched it away from me.

So I just looked around and admired some of the designs. But I’m not a big fan of Prada when it comes to their designs, as to me, most of them looks a little “old lady”.

But I did see something that I kind of liked. Not sure if you could see it, but it’s green (something I like) and has fairies (something I like) sitting on a lily.

rinaz.net

And if I’m not wrong, this is a James Jean design. It was 50 euro which seems reasonable but at the time, I wasn’t sure if I liked it enough to get it. What occasion would I have worn it anyway? But looking back, I think Iย should have.

Anyway, here are some of the items that Hema got :

Something for work.

rinaz.net

And something for functions.

rinaz.net

I think she spent about 600 euro in total, instead of paying full price of about 1200 for both. And on top of that, she’ll get some tax rebates when she claims it at the airport.

I didn’t spend anything there.

Our next stop was another 30 km up North to another outlet called ‘The Mall‘ and this place holds more Italian designer brands like Balenciaga, Armani and Ferragamo.

rinaz.net

There are crowds outside certain shops. Like Tods. It was so long, I reckon that it would take about an hour to enter. Anyway, we stopped at Gucci. We were lucky that we didn’t need to queue up to enter, because when we were done, there was a rather big line outside.

Anyway, like in ‘The Space’ which we visited earlier, there were a lot of Asian people inside buying designer things by the dozens. I even saw someone with thick stacks of 100 euro bills. I felt quite uncomfortable. I’m only inside because I’m accompanying my friend and I wouldn’t normally enter on my own!

Just to let you know, you need to bring your passport along with you as it seems that tourists have a buying limit of 10 items (if I’m not wrong) and the quota is checked by the passport.

And here are the items that Hema got :

A sling bag for her hubby.

rinaz.net

A wristlet.

rinaz.net

And a ladybird coin purse.

rinaz.net

I don’t remember how much she spent in total. Probably around another 500 euro? At this point of time, my heart was racing just at the thought of the amount my friend just spent. I’m really scared to spend the same amount for myself! I could have made a deposit on a new scooter or get another second hand car for that amount or fix my teeth. But it makes her happy, and it’s her money. She can do what she likes with it.

I didn’t spend anything at all here either.

Seems quite sad huh? That I didn’t get anything for myself considering that this brand is very popular among Singaporeans. But no worries, like Prada, I’m not a big fan of Gucci’s designs either as I don’t like too much logo monogramming. When it comes to designs, I prefer things that are classy and elegant and understated.

Anyway, we stopped by Roberto Cavalli to have a look see and I showed her how fierce his designs are with bold animal prints. I think his designs are cool, although it’s not something that I’d personally get for myself.

rinaz.net

And then we stopped by Valentino to show Hema how elegant his designs are. If I were given money to spend, and can only choose one luxury brand, Valentino would definitely be it. To me, the designs are extremely beautiful, feminine and classic. But most importantly, wearable.

We went through and admired all the beautiful outfits and shoes and then I saw the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen this year. My heart just skipped a beat when I saw it. It was the 2012 Spring/Summer Red Valentino dress.

rinaz.net

Don’t be deceived! It may look very simple in the picture above – it’s your basic A-line dress with a pink ribbon. But this is something that has to be seen in real life. You can tell that this is quality just by touching it. The fabric was the most luxurious silk-chiffon type of material. I gasped as I twirled it. Itย was so dreamy and so beautiful.

rinaz.net

It is very rare that I would be so deeply enamored by something. The last time that I felt this way was when I was in Milan and I saw this shoe by Dolce Gabbana. This dress is pure gorgeousness! But it costs 350 odd euro! And I had to fight with myself from getting it. I didn’t in the end because of priorities. But I was so sad ๐Ÿ™

I might try to recreate it at least since I have my own sewing machine or perhaps force my seamstress mum to sew one for me when I’m back in Singapore in August. It may not be a Valentino, but it’ll be a one ofย a kind handmade stuff. Hopefully I’ll earn enough to get something without thinking twice, one day ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, did you know that they did a photoshoot for this collection at Bomarzo? It’s an interesting place about 1.5 hours drive from Rome.

Anyway, there you go! That was my experience in an outlet shop in Florence. Have you visited there before? And should I have gotten the Valentino dress? What do you think?

Sidenote : I went to the Castel Romano Designer Outlet in Rome as there is a Valentino shop there. Unfortunately, while they have the series, they do not have MY dress ๐Ÿ™

I hate hard sellers

Many years ago, I used to go to a beauty salon in Singapore, where they did facial treatments like facial masks, steaming, ‘extracting’, massages and whatnots.

To make a long story short, I stopped going there eventually as they tend to always use pressure tactics and hard-selling so that you buy more services. And that’s very off putting. I don’t understand the lack of foresight, as it chases clients away rather than making them want to continue patronising.

So recently I got this in the mail :

rinaz.net

(Sans the soft toy as it’s covering my home address and I’m too lazy to photochop it out)

Inside are photos of me running in the half-marathon last month, list of prices and a bill for payment.

I don’t know how you’d react to that, but immediately I was really pissed off.

  1. First of all, while the photos are quite well shot, I never asked for them
  2. The fact that this company is chasing me for payments for things that I never asked for, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

You could justify that, Marina, it’s not a big deal – I could just send back the photos and problem’s solved. But why do /I/ have to take the time to get stamps, find a mail box (which is strangely difficult to find in Rome) and post it back? Why do /I/ have to take the effort for something that I never wanted or asked for in the first place?

rinaz.net

Another thing that quite bothered me is the fact that my address was freely given to this company by the running organization. By right, in Italy, there is a privacy law where you’d have to put your signature to give your permission for advertisers to contact you.

You might think that it’s not a big deal, one gets flyers and spam mail all the time. But in this case, it is different a the package has your name and address on it! And someone out there has your personal details that you have no intention of sharing in the first place.

Speaking of which, some years back, we had so many telemarketing calls and it got so bad that we put our phone numbers in the ‘Registro delle opposizioni‘ which is a list where registrants are protected from marketing calls.

rinaz.net

What do you think I should do with the photos? While I sympathise with the photo company for trying to make a living, hard-selling tactics are definitely not the way to go. Prior to this, I was contemplating on buying a photo, but after this incident … forget it!

Shame on you! I’m so turned off now like I’m turned off doing facials at beauty salons.

Did you know that there are food containing nickel?

Six hundred million people around the world, including me, are allergic to nickel. I have to avoid non pure metals, such as belt buckles, jewellery and watches or else my skin would get ridiculously itchy and I’d scratch non stop and when I finally realise it, it’s too late and I’ve ruined my skin.

rinaz.net

My apologies for such a disturbing picture. But oh gosh, yuck! I never realised how severe something was until I take a picture, get myself healed, compare it with before and see it for myself!

My skin is healing a lot better now by the way and I was at the allergologo (doctor specialising in allergies) a while back and apart from telling me what I already know, he also mentioned that there are food that I might have to avoid as they contain nickel.

I was stunned to hear them as he went along the top 5 :

  • Chocolate
  • Liquorice
  • Peanuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Spinach / Tomato / Pears

rinaz.net

What? Most of them food that I like. Yikes! A life in Italy without pomodoro is a difficult life. I like my pizza rosso. I like my pasta with red sauce. Heck, I even like Riso Pomodoro. VOTEEZDEEZ? Luckily for me though, the doctor mentioned that I don’t have to avoid them completely. Just reduce the intake on the ‘flare up’ days.

Adventures in sewing fail!

Remember this?

rinaz.net

Cart and I finally manage to translate the hieroglyphs from the cartamodella (template) when we went to a shop that sells zips and buttons and other finishings. There happened to be a lady-customer that has her own sewing shop and kindly, she showed us how to read the cartamodella. It was quite easy once you’ve got a hang of it.

I’ve already decided on making this skirt.

rinaz.net

So happily Cart and I went to a fabric shop which was not too far away and chose some fabrics for my skirt. By the way, FYI shops in Italy tend to be precise. If you need a pair of tailor’s scissors for example, you need to buy them in a specific shop. Or if you need a tracing paper, you need to go to another shop. Even for my car if I have tyre issues I need to visit a gommista for electrical issues an elettrauto etc. I’ve never come across an all-in-one.

Anyway, I told the lady that since I’m just a beginner and am just practising, I don’t want a too expensive fabric. She nodded her head and kept saying, “Si si, capisco”. So I was lulled in a false sense of security. I chose a beautiful brown and light brown fabric, which I thought would look simple, but elegant.

But just before she started to cut the fabric, Cart quickly and wisely asked, “Wait! How much is this?”

rinaz.net

To make a long story short, 3.5 meters of the georgette fabric costs 70 euro. My heart sank and I was close to leaving the store. 70 euro for a skirt is rather costly. We were in central Rome not too long back and I was amazed at the prices of the fabrics. But since we were in the city centre, I thought that the prices would normally be jacked up.Thus I couldn’t believe that the price would be like that in the residential area too.

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

Even the material for making one of my wedding outfits didn’t cost that much. But of course, things costs differently in different parts of the world.

But Cart decided to buy the fabric for me as a gift, which was nice of him. And we had an interesting evening tracing the cartamodella and then cutting the fabric itself. It’s like … +10 exp!!! And in the end, we had 4 separate pieces of cloth that we were supposed to sew together.

But I did a quick stitch before sewing it proper to have a quick preview of it like how my mum tends to do it and this is what happened.

rinaz.net

Hmm. Something isn’t right here. How could this be? We followed the entire instructions correctly. In fact, it’s supposed to be very loose even as I’m a size 42 and the template we were using were for 44 (the smallest)

Meh! Suffice to say that I’m giving up on this hobby for now as it’s a tad too expensive for a housewife. And I’m not the only one who is stunned by the prices, even friends from other parts of Italy shared me stories of how costly their materials are for their sewing experiments.

For the moment, I’ll change my game plan : To buy clothes from thrift shops and from bancarelle and adjust it to fit me ala NDAD. I think that makes more cents (geddit geddit?) :p

This is a vain post

This is going to sound quite narcissistic, so I apologize in advance. But I like how my skin looks like nowadays. Have a look at this picture of me taken last Friday. Vain me can’t believe at how clear my skin is, even with hardly any mekap.

rinaz.net

The only products that I’ve slapped on my face are :

This means quite a lot to me because I’ve been battling with acne since I was a teenager. Not just the little ones mind you, but the big, angry, pulsating ones. Suffice to say that it made me feel ugly for the longest time.

rinaz.net
I’m not proud of this, but hey, this is how I was

I’ve tried a lot of different things. But to make a long story short, the thing that worked the best for me at the time was Diane-35 which is an oral contraceptive. But it also controls your hormones which affects your skin. I’ve stopped using it for about 4 years now since the year I got married. Thankfully, I haven’t had any flare-ups since.

Nevertheless, apart from that, I think that there are several factors that has brought on my better skin. Firstly, the doctor did mention that a woman’s hormonal system tends to stabilize when they reach their 30s. And now that I’m living in Rome, the cold winter effect is making my skin less oily and less prone to zits.

I’ve also been using an app on my phone to remind me to do my facial routine. I keep telling myself that it’s a good habit to wash + tone + eye cream + moisturise. But there are days when I feel super lazy.

rinaz.net

So I’ve been using this app called Habit Streak. It’s been very motivating for me, especially how I could look back and see how many days I can go without breaking a chain. So much so that it would be a shame if I did, so I try my hardest not to!

Apart from that, I don’t know what else that I did differently. Perhaps I’ve been reducing in consuming food that I know that triggers my flareups. And maybe I’ve been jogging more? (Although I don’t know how much that affects the skin)

Only thing is, now that I’m in my 30s and my battle with acne is over … but there is a new set of problems that I have to face soon … WRINKLES! So I’ll just enjoy my skin as it is for the moment :p

If you can decipher this, you are probably a genius

I went a little overboard last weekend and bought a few sewing magazines.

rinaz.net

In Italy, there are a few popular riviste di cucito such as Burda and Modellina. MIL tells me that these are useful as apart from giving sewing ideas and tips, they also include cartamodelli (templates) that I could use for my projects.

Personally, I think that these are great and a little more convenient compared to buying the templates online, since there are a lot of newspaper kiosks in the neighbourhood.

Flipping through the magazines, there are a couple that I would love to start on.

Like this cute sun-dress. Reminds me quite a bit of the one that I have from Mango.

rinaz.net

This top I’d definitely wear as outfits such as these are very versatile and never go out of style. Quite perfect for the upcoming spring.

rinaz.net

I adore 60s fashion. It is one of the most fashionable decade in my opinion. So this dress really called out to me. Looks really classy doesn’t it?

rinaz.net

Sidenote : I just watched Down with love yesterday. And while the storyline was kind of meh, the outfits were just amazing! I love seeing colourful stuff.

But talking to my mum on the phone, she advised me to start with something simple, like a skirt. And so I saw this one which I quite liked. I can pair this with my nice green jacket and my nice boots and my nice bag and my nice blings.

rinaz.net

Looks simple enough to make. From what it looks like in the picture, it consists of 4×2 separate segments which I need to sew together. I can do that.

Looking at the instructions though, it starts to get a little challenging. What on earth are all these words? Since it’s in Italian, and I’m not that fluent …I’m a little overwhelmed but never-mind. Looking at this on the positive side, it can be a sort of language practise right?

rinaz.net

But that was nothing compared to this below. What on earth is this?! How am I supposed to read this? Where am I even supposed to start? This diagram looks much more complicated than the Advanced Mathematics that I had to learn while in Pre-Uni.

rinaz.net

I think I need to lie down.

Hohoho!

Even though I don’t really celebrate Xmas, I got this from my inlaws :

rinaz.net

A sewing machine!

It’s quite unexpected, as I don’t remember mentioning about this to my in laws. Moreover, it’s been a while since I’ve last sewed, but I really can’t wait to start on new projects – upcycling, making new dresses and crafts. I’ve seen quite a number of ideas online and I think it would be a lot of fun ๐Ÿ™‚
