Do you still want Fettuccine Alfredo?

Cart and I were walking around Piazza Navona during the weekend. Though we’ve been here quite a number of times, there were still interesting things to see like performance acts like magicians, giant bubble blowers, human statues as well as artists showing off and vending their paintings.

rinaz.net
By the way, can you find something odd here?

After what seemed like hours of roaming around, (foot reflexology!) we reached this restaurant which probably started the whole Fettuccine Alfredo phenomenon.

rinaz.net

It was said that this pasta, made with just pasta and butter, was cooked by the restaurant owner to feed to his pregnant wife who found it hard to keep food down. Cart also mentioned that this pasta was cooked by Italian mothers to feed their child when they are ill. In any case, the restaurant owner added it to the menu and it was well received by American tourists and word of mouth made it so famous that the dining walls were full of pictures of famous personalities (I should have snapped a picture)

The thing is, its not really a typical dish that Romans would eat because its so simple, basically made of butter and fettuccine. In fact, if you go around other restaurants not only in Rome but the rest of Italy, you’d never see this in the menu.

rinaz.net

Also, 20 euro for a plate of Fettuccine coated with butter!? This is basically a tourist trap. Thanks, but no thanks

Sidenote : I’m curious to know why Italians don’t put chicken in their pasta. I know its an official rule, but what’s the basis for it? C’è nessuno sa perchè non possiamo aggiungere il pollo dentro la pasta?

Julie and Julia. Have you watched it?

I watched Julie and Julia recently and I enjoyed it a lot. Have you watched it?

rinaz.net
This movie is a charming comedy drama which contrasts the life of The French Chef and personality, Julia Child in the early years of her culinary career with the life of a young New Yorker Julie Powell, who aspires to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s cookbook in 365 days, a challenge she described on her blog.

In all honesty, apart from watching a few YouTube clips, I don’t know Julia Child that much except that I thought that she had this unmistakable high pitched voice, while I watched her prepare food in real time. At first it was quite annoying to hear, but it grows on you. She rambles a lot, nevertheless, its the type of ramble that you wont mind listening to because she’s funny and goofy and charming.

I thought that Meryl Streep was solid in her depiction of Julia Child, she got the voice and mannerisms dead on. Check out this short clip on her solid performance.

I’m not sure how true the movie portrayal was as compared to her real life, but seeing her live and adapt in France is very admirable to me. I feel quite inspired. She didn’t seem to have any fear at all being friendly and so charming with the natives even with her lack of knowledge of French at the time. I wish I was like that! I tremble even when trying to talk to the clerk while registering for an Italian class.

rinaz.net

See! I want that! I’d like to be happy and charming and people around me to light up when they see me. Instead, the man selling vegetables at the mercato near our place just wants to get to the next customer

Also, it was very inspiring to see how brave she was, signing up for a culinary school, despite many challenges against her – a schoolmaster that didn’t want her there, being in an all male and I assume all French speaking class, she amazingly didn’t crumble and instead continued to be so positive and just went ahead. No publisher was interested in publishing her cookbook initially. I think most people would feel defeated already.

rinaz.net

Here she is looking very happy that she’s able to chop all the onions first, after feeling upset during her first lesson being brushed off by the teacher for not being able to chop properly. She took up the challenge, practised with who knows how many onions, most probably with bucketfuls of tears and just did it!

Anyway, here is a treat for all glee fans. if you looked carefully, you could actually see someone very familiar acting out as Julia’s sister, Dorothy :

rinaz.net

Its Sue Sylvester from Glee!

The performance by Amy Adams was al-right. Although the character, Julie Powells, she portrayed seemed rather narcissistic, and it strikes me odd that she’s always talking about Julia Child at least once every 5 minutes, she was still well meaning and cute.

I could even look past the part where she and her husband are all eating greedily, even talking with their mouths full! Making lewd, orgasmic sounds. I mean, one “MMM!” is fine. But anything more than 5 seconds is just too much. But I had to draw the line and cringe every now and then when the husband just casually comes in the kitchen and dips his hand in the bowl of frosting. I’d be very upset if anyone does that.

rinaz.net

I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR FINGERS HAS BEEN! Its probably dirty! Don’t put your fingers in my bowl before I’m done cooking! Urgh! Its such a big pet peeve!

In any case, there was a part where Julie received a call from a journalist who actually asked Julia Child, of what she thought of her blog. After the call, she looked crestfallen and with her hands flaying, she squealed, “Julia HATES me!”

rinaz.net

And at the end of the movie, without it explaining why, I thought to myself, why did Julia Child hated Julie Powell’s blog?

And thus I searched online and found it.

I couldn’t even read halfway through the first page – its full of rambling. And not in the good, Julia Child way. I couldn’t stomach reading the rest of the pages, but to what I have read so far, it was so pretentious and so dull and so LONG! I applaud anyone who could read all the way through.

rinaz.net

Its a blog, its not a book! A blog post shouldn’t be more than a million words long! There were no pictures to rest my eyes every now and then. Some might say that technology might not be so advanced, but come on, it was only about 7 years ago and people had digital cameras in 2003. And I think phones already had cameras then.

Also, its not her fowl foul language that bugs me, actually when used in the right context, it brings out a person’s grief or anger or anguish. Instead, I find it very pretentious.

What bugged me the most is that its so narcissistic and so full of complaints. And for a blog that’s supposed to be known to showcase cooking all the recipes from Julia Child’s cookbook, I don’t see much writing about her experience while cooking.

Granted that I merely skimmed through the blog, but the bits that I did read when she writes about her time in the kitchen, there wasn’t much description about that. Its like, “BLA BLA BLA. Eric is so mean to me. BLA BLA BLA. My job sucks. BLA BLA BLA. Today, I cooked Beof Bourginon. It was fine. BLA BLA BLA”

I mean come on, it doesn’t take a foodie to know this, but if someone loves something, big chances is that they would want to share their joy and be more descriptive in their experience – be it good or bad. With her blog, I didn’t sense the love.

rinaz.net

Nope, none of this when trying out your own cooking and really liking it.

I’m not a chef, or such an acclaimed food blogger, but I can usually tell if a person is being genuine or not on a blog. I get the appeal of Marisa, who herself was inspired by Julie and Julia. And is blogging about making new dress a day for 365 days. She’s adorably cute but most importantly, she seems genuinely passionate and enjoy what she’s doing.

rinaz.net

So it baffles me, that there are so many people following Julia Powell’s blog and actually reading her drone. And on top of that, she gets donations through a paypal account, so much so to the point that that she could blow it on whatever. And she got two books published at this point of writing, and retained her fame through the movie. Something is wrong here.

This reminds me of the save Karyn project all over again – where a young woman accumulated a $20,000 credit due to HER overspending and she set up a website to ask for donations. Quite shameless right? Ironically, now all her bills are paid for, she’s publishing a book, has interviews from top television networks and a movie will be done about her in the future.

It feels like I’m doing wrong in life. But I’m comforted in the fact that Julia Childs herself didn’t approve of Julie’s blog. So there is hope in this world after all.

Anyway, if you haven’t watched this movie yet, do catch it. As someone who likes to eat, it was fun to watch. Just that I thought that it was better without the Julie part 😛

We’re going to Milano!

Cart and I will be going to Milan in November. Though Milan is mostly known as a fashion capital, we’d probably have to give that, as well as the Milan fashion week, a miss.

rinaz.net

We’ll be in Milan mainly because I’m a fan of the TED conferences, and to my pleasant surprise, I found out that there will be a TEDx at Lake Como.

TED conferences are about sharing ideas on changing the world, and topics could range from technology to culture. Initially, these conferences are only limited to a select group, with entry fee said to cost a shocking 6 k USD and limited to just one thousand people, but thankfully it’s been opened for viewing online for the rest of us.

By the way, if you havent watched any TED conference yet, do start with this one by Majora Carter about sustainable urban areas. I find it very inspiring!

TEDx on the other hand is an independently organized events by communities to host a TED like event. It’s usually free, but it doesn’t mean that it’s less capable though. Ever since I’ve attended several independent talks in Singapore such as Interesthink, Nexus and Unconference, I’ve learnt not think too lowly of independent talks.

But apart from attending the TEDx, of course, I’m looking forward to exploring the rest of Milano. I’m sure there will be plenty of lovely things to see. Firstly the beautiful Lake Como, made very famous from Star Wars episode 2.

rinaz.net

Maybe we’d visit La Scala, which is said to be the most renowned opera and ballet theatre in the world.

rinaz.net

We probably wouldn’t be seeing Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper. Even though it’s months to November, it seems that regular entry tickets are all sold out till January. The only tickets available are through agencies, which charges you 50 euro when it’s normally 6 euro to see a museum.

rinaz.net

But anyway, I’m sure that no trip to Milano would be complete without visiting the Duomo, one of the biggest cathedral in the world.

Milan's Duomo

I’m really looking forward to seeing Milan 🙂

Sidenote : Actually I’m also keen to visit Blogosfere, an Italian Blog aggregator, kind of like Ping.sg to see it behind the scenes.

Blemish Balm Cream vs Tinted Moisturizer

There are times when it’s not practical to wear make-up,  like going marketing or exercising at the sports centre. But it’s nice to have a little bit of coverage. After all, not every one of us have perfect skin, and even after hitting 30 when the hormones are supposed to be more stable, I still get the occasional zits.

This is me, early in the morning, completely au-naturale.

rinaz.net au naturel

While I was back in Singapore, I used to use a Blemish Balm cream when I want to go out but not fuss too much with cosmetics.

Blemish Balm or BB cream was said to be a cream that dermatologists prescribe to patients who were recovering from laser surgery because of its soothing and regenerating qualities. But regular people could use it too, to even out skintone, heal acne, have UV protection. Soon, it was all the rage in Asia a couple of years ago.

rinaz.netl

There are plenty of varieties of BB cream, but this is the Rojukiss BB cream that I bought some while ago at Watson’s in Singapore.

rinaz.net au naturel

At about $39.50 SGD, it wasn’t cheap for something that came out of a drug-store, but if it rejuvenates my skin, even out my skin-tone and heals my skin like it says it would, it seemed like a good investment.

rinaz.net au naturel

Squeezing it out of the tube, is a brown cream which almost has a buttery texture, without the greasiness. What’s interesting is that the consistency of the cream was rather thick, but once warmed and rubbed through the fingers, it becomes soft and more emollient and easier to spread through the skin.

rinaz.net au naturel

You just need a few drops of this on the skin, because a little bit goes a long way. See how much coverage there is with just one drop applied to my skin?

rinaz.net au naturel

Nevertheless I liked how dewy it made my skin looked. There was coverage but it looks natural and if I got the right shade, it will not make my skin look like I’m wearing any make up. For me, it lasts for several hours before my skin starts to get oily, so it’s perfect for days when I just want to pop down to the market or exercise.

My only big qualm with it is that the shade was too light for me. Unfortunately, most BB creams does not seem catered for darker skins and are just too dark for me. It would probably suit a fairer skin person. But I still use it because it gives a nice foundation.

Unfortunately, I’m running out of my BB cream and it didn’t seem to be all that popular in Italy since I’ve yet to see any.

So the closest that I could find here in Italy that kind of resembles the BB cream would be the tinted moisturiser. While there were many various brands of tinted moisturisers, I chose this one from Nivea Visage.

rinaz.net au naturel

I don’t remember exactly how much this was, but I think it was less than 10 euro when I got it from the mall. This tinted moisturizer claims to hydrate the skin for 24 hours, contains vitamins, make skin more uniform and luminous.

rinaz.net au naturel

The texture is quite similar to the BB cream, creamy feeling, thick like butter but without the greasiness. It has a slight fragrance to it though, and while it doesn’t bother me, it could be an issue to some sensitive nose.

And again, a little bit goes a long way! I only need a few dots on the skin to cover my entire face. The biggest difference between this and the BB cream is that, I had to be quick in rubbing it in my skin, because it doesn’t get more emollient, instead it seems to feel dry the longer I leave it unattended.

rinaz.net au naturel

Nevertheless, the end result is quite pretty and luminous. While it didn’t cover all my blemishes, it does a good job in smoothing out my skin. Compared to the BB cream, I seem to have a more matte effect with this tinted moisturizer. Which is great as a foundation.

But again, my biggest issue is that it was too light for me! I’ve been reading other people’s review saying that this cream was too dark for them, but unfortunately it’s the opposite for me.

rinaz.net au naturel

But I think its a passable replacement for my BB cream. Its not perfect, but after a month of using it, its not that bad either.

Sidenote :

Oh, since we’re talking about skin, I’d like to take the chance to ask you to guess, which one is my hand and which one is my mother in law’s hand after a week vacationing in Sicilia …

Getting a riding license in Italy

Am back from my riding exam, check out what I’ve got!

rinaz.net patente

Okay, I look like an alien in this pic, but who cares! Hehehehe! Class A3 babeh! Now I can officially ride a moto of any class here in Italy. Even a 1000cc moto and more! Like this Ducati that I’ve seen at the Big Bike Fest in Singapore.

rinaz.net patente

Now that that’s over, I can focus on the rest of my 2011 goals.

I have to say though, the exam wasn’t as difficult as I anticipated. Before my training strarted, I was worried because I’d be practising with a Transalp (their smallest model is 500cc) which is more powerful than any motorcycle that I’ve ever used. Moreover, I’ve been using an automatic scooter for a long while. But after a couple of rides, its like a power trip, I guess. Anything less feels kind of puny now. Gosh, I’m really turning into a biker chick

rinaz.net patente
This is me getting scolded by my instructor. “Yew musta go near da birillo! Understand!”

But apart from getting used to a heavier and more powerful machine, the exam was quite a breeze. It could partly be because compared to the riding test in Singapore, there are less challenges, and also it could partly be because I’m an experienced rider, so it wasn’t anything new.

rinaz.net patente

Check it out, there are only 4 inner challenges to do – The slalom, the figure 8, parallel cones at 2nd gear and finally breaking at the lines. And yes, my drawing skills are rudimentary, but I try

Although, admittedly, I was quite worried mainly because of the street route. When I asked my riding instructor, he said that only the invigilator knew. So Cart and I called up the theory school and we were informed to call back to talk to the invigilator on Friday. When Friday arrived, they said they did not hear from her. Called back on Saturday, and nothing. Even on my exam day itself, nothing was heard from here till close to lunch time!

Not knowing made me feel jittery. Probably because I’m very accustomed to the Singaporean systematic ways – everything was already laid out to you in advance. Every plan, every syllabus, where points will be allocated, where points will be demerited. At the very least I wanted to know at least which route we would be going to, and what exactly they will be checking.

sam kymco - rinaz.net

The only thing we knew was that the street route would be around the riding school, so the day before, I took out my stepson, Sam Kymco, and looked out for every street sign, every markings till we were very familiar with the area.

By the way, something interesting about Italy is that you could drive/ride even without a license. This is a foglio rosa. Literally translated as pink paper, this is given to you by the driving theory school. And this allows you to train and practise with your vehicle in your neighbourhood.

rinaz.net patente

Its only valid for 6 months though, and you should try to get your patente in this duration.

Anyway, after we heard word of when the examiner would arrive, I got ready. I showed her all my documents such as the Carta D’Identita, Permesso Di Soggiorno as well as the Foglio Rosa. Just the same as when taking the driving theory test.

rinaz.net - carta d'identita, permesso di soggiorno

There was another candidate with me. She checked all the documentations, and then all of a sudden, she asks us to start. “Go through the challenge, don’t put your feet down,” she instructed. Uh? Didn’t we get a practise try first?! I was starting to bum out. Even my trainer started to add in, “Don woori! Is juz likeda evariday

Ok lor. Luckily I didn’t fall or hit any cones or put my feet on the ground.

And then it was time to go through the street route. I was still confused. Fortunately for me, we went together as a group, so I more or less followed the other candidate, obeying street rules, using the correct signals when it was time to turn, going at a safe speed of about 50km/hr. (Felt so slow to me!) The examiner was behind us all the while, in a car.

The feeling was a lot different compared to back in Singapore, for some reason it was more festive because there would be about 15 of us at a time with about 100 candidates in total. Maybe it’s just me

rinaz.net patente

After following us halfway, suddenly the examiner went past us, waving her hands around. I guess it was a sign for us to take over? So we signalled left, took over, and signalled right when re-entering the lane. It was so wierd. She should have briefed to us what she wanted before we started. Its a good thing that I’ve experience in riding before, because the entire situation was so confusing. I’ve no idea what she wanted.

And when we arrived back into the riding school, I was still confused and wondered about my future. But luckily after scribbling down in her notes, she was satisfied enough and gave me and the other candidate our patente!

And here I am, sharing this good news to you and I’ve been calling up as many people as I know!

Car next. And then helicopter!

How to make Apple Crumble

I made apple crumble for the first time last week, and I’m quite surprised at how easy it was to make. All in all, the prep and the cooking took about an hour and a half in total.

apple crumble - rinaz.net
You don’t need to use a Mac for this

Not a lot of pics here because my hands were rather greasy from handling the butter, but the recipe is quite straightforward.

First, you heat the oven at 180 degrees. And then coat your baking dish with butter. And then you put your apple filling layer made from :

  • 500g apples already peeled, cored and cut into small cubes
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1tbs flour
  • Some cinnamon

Mix them all together. And now you prepare your crumble.

  • 300g plain flour with a bit of salt
  • 180g brown sugar
  • 200g butter

Rub in the butter bit by bit. And when it starts to look like breadcrumbs, spoon it on top of the apple filling layer. Pop it in the oven for about 45 minutes to an hour and then … TADAH!

apple crumble - rinaz.net

Fullamak! Smells good, tastes lovely with ice cream, cream or custard or even on its own! Swensen’s better watch out

Instant food : Hits and misses

Living in Italy, where not every ingredient are accessible, I brought back some instant food-hauls from Singapore in January. (food haul? I should be a food video blogger like those mekap gurus on youtube!) And so far, I’ve used up quite a bit of my rations. All the maggi mee are gone, I’ve used up pretty much all of the Kara Coconut milk, my Lingham Chilli sauce is almost finished and that took a lot of willpower not to finish in the first few months!

rinaz.net

Here are a few that’s left.

One of the food that I’m most pleased about is the mini instant ketupat.

ketupat mini - rinaz.net

Traditionally, ketupat has to be made by hand out of coconut leaves. I remember my aunt trying to teach me how to weave one, but my hands keep being in knots – its very confusing! And it takes hours just to cook them! But its worth it in the end. I love to tuck in and eat them with gusto.

Here in Italy, it’s abit tough to find fresh coconut leaves (to my liking) for sale. And obviously, I don’t want to go through manual weaving. So the instant mini ketupat was perfect! All I had to do was to take out the individual sachet out of the pack.

ketupat - rinaz.net

Boil it for about an hour till the rice grows and expands into fat sachets. Drain and leave it to rest and cool down.

ketupat - rinaz.net

And soon you can have a nice plate of ketupat eaten with your favouite accompaniment like rendang, ayam masak merah, kuah satay and the likes.

rinaz.net
Or Ayam Masak Oren

The instant ketupat tastes almost as good as a traditional ketupat!

There are some misses though, like this instant rendang pack.

Rendang is another popular Malay dish made of beef, spices, coconut milk and toasted coconut. I remember my tiny mum using her immense superhuman strength to cook this with portions enough to feed a public school.

rendang - rinaz.net

Not to say that this instant rendang is not flavourful. But it just doesn’t taste as intense or very homemade nor captures the magic that I remember from eating it. But what to do, its instant. And because I’m in an Ang-Moh country where not every ingredients are acessible, I just have to make do (or make without!)

I think next time I’ll go cook from scratch.

P.S Yes, yes I’m in Italy and there are a plentiful of good food here. But sometimes you just want a piece of home every now and then

This is my stepchild

When I first saw him, I thought that he’d bring me joy into my life.

At first sight, he didn’t look too bad, but I was still a little doubtful. “He’s got character!” Cart said, and eventually, I thought, a bit of a spruce and polish would nurture him back to a semblance of normality again.

And after a week of deciding, Cart and I decided to adopt him.

The adoption process was such a hassle. First we had to head to the adoption center where he was, and then to another agency for a handing over transaction, and then to another agency for insurance! And then finally I brought him home.

This is my new stepson, Kymco.

kymco 125 rinaz.net

He is a People 125 model which originated from Taiwan. He’s a used scooter that I bought for cheap from my driving school. He looks all battered up, probably from being mishandled from other riding students.

kymco 125 rinaz.net

The brake clutch is broken and all mangled up. Urgh! And I cannot adjust the mirror, so I cant see what’s going on behind me.

kymco 125 rinaz.net

The speedometer keeps being at 0km/hr regardless of what speed I go. And the fuel guage is forever showing 1/2 full regardless even if the tank is completely full.

kymco 125 rinaz.net

I’m pixelling the number of the school because I don’t want to give them additional publicity! There is a huge-ass hole near the right side foot rest. I don’t understand how it could humanly be possible to do that?! Did a riding student took a hammer and beat it up?! And the cover for the power box has been ripped off.

Initially I thought that for 350 euro, the scooter was good enough. I saved enough money from what Cart gives me monthly. I’ll just close one eye at how ghastly he looks. But when added with transfer fee of 190 euro, and a year of insurance of 633 euro. I feel like crying!

rinaz cry

I am beautiful! And I deserve better than this unglamorous thing! Look at how happy I was when I got my first scooter back in 2006!

kymco 125 rinaz.net

But what to do? I’m stuck because that’s the best that I can get at this point of time till I get a regular job. And as crappy as it is, Kymco runs well. And now that I’ve a scooter, I’m on the right track to my 2011 goal. Also, another advantage is, seeing how battered he is, I’m sure no one would want to steal him.

kymco 125 rinaz.net

But for sure, my inner minah-moto is telling me that I need to spruce up Kymco a little. Most importantly the brake clutch and then the mirrors. And we’ll see what we can do next. And in time slowly, maybe I’ll begin to love my stepson.

P.S : If you’re wondering why I’m calling him my stepson, its because the term stepchild has this unfortunate connotation to mean someone that you’ve inherited unwillingly. Its a bad stigma in real life though, and I’m probably perpetuating a bad image by using this term, but I really don’t have any love for him!

Check out this nice scooter I saw near the fake colosseum

Celebrating Hari Raya in Rome 2010

Dear Mak,

How are you? I hope that you and the entire family are doing okay. I saw some of the Raya pictures already from facebook through some our relatives and I really enjoyed seeing them. It looked so festive! I wish I was there! Bila Mak nak buat akaun facebook? Marina pun nak tengok juga gambar yang Mak petik!

Over here in Rome, it doesn’t feel so festive. It feels like a regular day and even Cart had to take the day off since Eid is not an official public holiday in Italy. But I’m glad that I could hear Warna radio station online this year. It always reminds me a little of home. I tried to record and sync the timing to suit our breaking fast times, but I keep getting into technical difficulties -_-

rinaz.net

In any case, this year, in the morning of Eid, we finally managed to go to the Grand Mosque in Rome. This year we are lucky as we were joined with my classmate Meryem and her husband. They were really lovely company and I enjoyed getting to know them better.

rinaz.net

There were 3 prayer session – 8.30, 9.30, and 10.30. We barely made it for the last session and I was worried that we would be late. So I rushed in to take my ablution, and had to fight through to find space in the prayer room. There were so many people there! I anticipated that there would be a lot of people, but what I really didnt appreciate was that there were a number of people who were sitting around, with no intention of praying, taking up space, and spent the entire time chatting in their groups. I dont understand why come in the first place. And there were children running around and screaming. It feels very chaotic Mak. And I felt dizzy after a few minutes. Oh pening!

rinaz.net

After the prayers, I moved over to hear the sermon more clearly. But it was in Arab so I didnt understand anything! I’m very puzzled, Mak. Shouldn’t it be at least in Italian? After all, we are in Italy. Macam tak puas hati, begitu. But different country, different custom I suppose. Moreoever, Cart said that this is possibly a sensitive issue to discuss.

rinaz.net

Anyway, after the prayer we went to have a walk outside the mosque where there were many open markets selling all sorts of things – kind of like the old Geylang Serai before its reconstruction. It was crowded and confusing, but you can see a lot of interesting sights there, like kebab, cookies, imported food and others. There was someone selling a used playstation game even :p

Check out this satay looking food!

rinaz.net

Cart got some Egyptian sweets from one stall, and they were really nice.

rinaz.net

One of them is called Kunafa – and its a hairy looking biscuit thing. Meryem pronounced Kunafa so beautifully and she corrected some of the way I pronounced some of my favourite Middle East Food. I should have recorded it :p

We said our goodbyes to Nizam and Meryem and then later in the afternoon, we prepared to get ready for a small and simple gathering with Cart’s family. Its so non traditional! We didnt make any Malay food this time and instead, completely Italian styled dinner! I think its better too anyway. Italian food is less troublesome to cook compared to Malay food. And we were done cooking in less than two hours. So together we made these :

rinaz.net
Pasta with rughetta and cherry tomato

rinaz.net
pollo alla cacciatora

Stir fried potato with spinach. Uh. No picture because I forgot to snap :p

rinaz.net
And Cart managed to whip up some Honey Frozen Yoghurt too with the ice cream maker!

I had a lovely evening, despite how low-key it was, just relaxing, chatting with each other, playing games on the wii and just enjoying each other’s company.

Sorry you cant see Paola in this video, she’s being covered by a giant plant. Speaking of plants, people have been giving me a lot of plants as presents but I am running out of spaces to keep them! I feel tension when my plants die.

The next day, which is a Saturday, I’ve invited a few of my friends from Italian class and they brought along their respective husbands. Wah, it was such an international group! There was one from Morocco, one from Syria, one from Peru, one from Romania, and from Malaysia! I think all of them didn’t know each other prior to this, but it was a group of people that I enjoyed talking with and I hoped that they get along well.

rinaz.net

Anyway, this time round, I thought that I’d try to make my most favourite thing to eat during Raya, Ayam Masak Merah and ketupat.

I also made some samosa, as well as some sweet and sour fish as a backup plan in case no one likes the Ayam.

rinaz.net
This is not a samosa, but I forgot to snap a picture, also I used the same filling :p

Wah. Its a little bit of a hassle, having to prep, to shape, to coat, to fry, kedebikkedebuk. When the guests arrived at 7.30, I was just halfway done. Thank goodness the ladies helped me out. If not, I think I would have fainted.

I know its just a small thing for you though Mak. You are superwoman! You could make a full buffet with 6 different dishes by yourself. Sungguh power mak saya.

Anyway, Cart warned me not to make the Ayam Masak Merah too hot, He said, “This is for the guests, this is not for you”. So I cut only 5 pieces of dried chilli in the blender and it didnt look red. Even after a squeeze of tomato concentrate and a bottle of tomato sauce, the colour is still wont become red. In the end, I had Ayam Masak Oren.

But anyway, the ketupat were pretty easy to make. Not sure if you remember, but last year while I was back in Singapore, I bought a couple of packs of instant ketupat. All I had to do was to boil it for about an hour and let it cool down before serving!

Its quite embarrassing, especially when presenting it to my Malaysian guests. But in the end, it was heartening to see them have a nice appetite 😀

After the dinner, we had a chat. Even my Peruvian friend did a demonstration and proudly showed off her country to us. She was like a teacher! Maybe next time I’ll do a demonstration about Singapore too! Hahaha!

It was so funny. Its a shame that time passes so fast when you’re enjoying yourself. But all in all, I had a lovely weekend. It was simple, but very enjoyable.

So there you go, that was how I spent Raya in Rome! I miss you Mak and I cannot wait to see you in December
