Pictures are fun

I was trying out some techniques from this instructional DVD.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I borrowed ‘Photoshop for wedding photographers‘ at the library. It was kind of interesting the techniques that the author was telling. A tad bit on the corny side, the presentation, but generally overall, I liked it. A few ideas on what to do for some picture tips now.

Anyway, what a week! And where did it go to? How quickly time passes by and by a blink of an eye, the week is already over!

Suffered a heart palpitations at work when the portal was always creating problems for me. Where I work, the company encourages us to use the portal as much as possible. Thus, when one of the head of department wanted to use the portal for a survey for the secondary two’s, I thought that it would be a cinch since it was so easy to do.

When the day comes, students couldn’t log in because the portal was slow, and even when they managed to log in, they couldn’t submit the form! And there was even one class when the portal decided to do a maintenance right there and then!

Can you imagine how stressful it is when people arrows you when things went wrong? And the blame game begins. I really dislike that. Hope it all goes well come Monday.

Anyway, started on writing the newsletter for the school. It’s not completed, but looks good so far, I sorta like the look of the cork background that makes it look like a pin-up. I’m digging it. What do you think of it so far?

It looks great Miss Marina!

Oh yes, I second that!

So far, I’ve one response to the makeover for Wednesday, I think we’ll all have fun then! I wonder if Juli would bring her make-up box too? I’ll have to ask her about it, I’d like to take advantage of the lightings the instructor has provided. With Juli’s make-up savvy and my photography, we’ll do great. I just know it.

I’m completely addicted to Lost Bah! This is exactly why I don’t watch telley. I watch an episode, get hooked to it and now I cant stop downloading! Unfortunately, limewire is as slow as heck and it’s the same for bittorrent too. *pulls hair*

This is crazy.

I went through the same phase with Sex and the city. I’d leave the computer on overnight and watch the episodes once they are done and gleefully chuckle at others who weren’t fortunate enough to enjoy them.

I want my Lost episodes … Bwahh …*cries like a spoiled brat* Gimme gimme gimme! Waaahh!

Maybe I’ll go ask Clement, the technical assistant in school (and my newly appointed best friend at work aka BFAW) to burn the entire season for me. He’s got everything, including the Family Guy series that hasn’t even reached this shores yet.

It was raining when I went for a riding practise on Saturday. It was not easy to ride in the rain, I’ll have to say … everything was so slippery. Am not sure if it was the bike or the road but I skidded many times yesterday. That was quite dangerous! Imagine if it was on the main road. Not good.

Booked for a practise theory session on Wednesday before the actual Riding Theory Test on Thursday. Only then will I be able to take the actual Traffic Police Test to obtain the actual license if I pass.

This is taking too long. Not good.

Went to Sim Lim Square today to get my brother a new CPU. The specs of the new computer is way superior to my current compy.

*jealous*

It was nice anyway, having a day out with just the siblings only. Just a few pics.

Only 18 days more to go … It’ll be worth the wait 🙂

You’re wanted!

Who : Someone who is not camera shy and loves to express emotions.

Okay, time to pass out now. I’ll update more during the weekends 🙂 Goodnight!

My inadequacies

Mushroom and tomato cheesemelts, disgusting to look, but oh so yummy to eat.

I stumbled upon PniiWof’s blog and marvelled at the wonderful dishes that she could whip up with such ease. Lets just face it, I’m not a good cook. I’m the type of person who just literally throw things in the pot and hope for the best. Sometimes I feel embarrassed when I see Cartcart cooking so easily and when he asks me about Asian food and all I could do is to stumble … Cooking should be second nature to women right?

Oh well.

There are a few issues that Mum and I maturely discuss about.Mum thinks that being independent is a level of how well someone cooks and keep house. I kept thinking that how a person could live without the help others is independence. I believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with using pre-made bottled ingredients. Mum is vehemently against those. At the very least I know how to cook simple things. I can boil water with no problems… I can make Sweet and Sour fish, Chap Chye, Fish Curry, Stir Fried Veggies, Tom Yam Soup, Curry Puffs and I can bake cakes and biscuits *proud*

I’ve always wanted to invite close friends to a home-cooked lunch or dinner. Juli cooked a memorable dinner and Hema cooked wonderful lunch for us. I can’t even remember what I cooked for them. It would be nice to do ala-Jamie Oliver. Maybe I should just procrastinating and just do it. I’ve been complaining about this for ages.

I was watching telley with my brother today and was amazed to see that the Power Rangers were still around!

I’m so amazed. This thing has been around for about 10 years now. Those things were the craze when I was still in secondary school. I swear, Power rangers everywhere. Water-bottles, pencil cases, bags … even the school collar pins we were supposed to wear were replaced with a pink / blue / green / yellow / red / black ranger collar pins. Such were our obsession with it.

I could still remember a little robot that went “ai-yai-yai-yai-yai” I wonder whatever happened to that annoying little thing.

I’m just as amazed because the Pokemon phenomenon,  I didn’t think it went beyond 10 years.

If I made a pokemon, I’d be something like this … heheheh

I encountered the most interesting thing at work a few days back. And I just realised that Flash MX 2004 uses Actionscript 2.0 now. Normally, when I create buttons, I’d just use

on (release) {
nextScene();
}

Flash MX had an option for me to click and choose the scene that I wanted to go to. So it was pretty easy for me. That Friday I had to crack my head trying to figure out why that code didn’t work and all sorts of error messages appeared. I mean, it’s just a button, it should be easy to code right?

Wrong!

I stared and stared at the screen hoping for some divine inspiration to appear. Nothing. Worse part is, when a HOD was standing behind me all the time looking at what I did. Very stressful when I have to do something with someone looking at me all the time. I had to run away to the computer labs upstairs. Even then, experimenting with the codes didn’t worked.

Then I realised that the new Actionscript version uses a more object orienting programming and that I had to give a name to my button. So now, the code looks like this

buttonname.onRelease = function()
{
gotoandplay(“scene”,1);

Oh I think its time to study programming again … It looks like I just can’t run away from it … I might have faked it in my diploma course, but I cant fake it any more now no matter how much I think programming challenged I am, I still have to try…. Ai-yai-yai-yai-yai.

But work hasn’t been too bad for me, the staff are nice and the kids aren’t bad. I’m very surprised to see that the students are quite respectful of each other. I’m serious! I’ve never seen a culture where the students are actually responsive and actually talks normally to each other without screaming. And this coming from a neighbourhood school. Can you imagine that? They actually DO the tasks you ask them to. I couldn’t help but be in such wide eyed wonder.

Of course I was puzzled at why the students were allowed to bring hand-phones to school, even mp3 players. But they have *never* used them in class. *faints in amazement*

How? How? Wow! How? Woah … How???

Amazing, aye?

Spent the weekends just being lazy at home, watching VCD’s and lounging around at home. I watched the village (interesting!) Meet the fockers (boring) White Chicks (funny!) and Closer (thought provoking)

Closer almost came to be one of my favourite list of movie as it was hauntingly beautiful, with an interesting storyline, questioning about fidelities and the subject of true love. I laughed at some of the parts where the two main male characters indulged in seedy online chat. At the beautiful portrayal and the witty dialoge.

Anna: I don’t kiss Strange men.
Dan : Neither do I.

I don’t want trouble.
I won’t be any trouble.
You’re taken!
But you kissed me!
What are you? Twelve?

Why did you swear eternal love when all you wanted is excitement?
It bores you?
No, it disappoints me

At Anna’s Art Exhibition

Larry : What do you think?
Alice : It’s a lie. It’s a bunch of sad strangers photographed beautifully. And all the glittering assholes who appreciate art say it’s beautiful cause that’s what they want to see. But the people in the photos are sad and alone. But the pictures make them look beautiful, so the exhibition is reassuring, which is a lie. Which makes it all a big fat lie.
Larry : I’m the big fat lie’s boyfriend.

Hello Stranger

Coupled with the most excellent music from Damien Rice, The Blower’s Daughter. Wonderful, wonderful movie. I like it.

Before I end the blog for today, just a few “what the heck pictures”

Taken right outside my window the block opposite me… Nice underwear 😛

Just a typical scene in idyllic Italy

Ehi Bernado!
Si?
Il toro calcia l’uomo
Si. A volte il toro vince.
Non lo mangio.

(rough translation)

Hey Bernardo!
Yes?
The bull’s kicking the man
Yes. Sometimes the bull wins
I’m not eating it.

Alicia Milano as a man! *peers*

I love Secondlife, a beautiful world to be in

Isn’t this adorable?

Looks like Secondlife has been hit by the tiny critter rage! That’s me on the left and my little squirrel friend on the right there is Mickey. Later on, I asked Cartcart to accompany me in getting tiny avatars. And we dressed ourselves up as bunnies. Aren’t we cute?

I’ve always liked 3D worlds. Ever since I’ve explored my first 3D world, I have been active since. I’ve been a penguin in Worlds, being very impressed by a Greek state in Activeworlds, loving the community in Cybertown and being enthralled by There. It’s wonderful to be able to craft whatever that you wanted.

So naturally, I gave Secondlife a try after being in Cybertown for about two years. At first log in, I was overwhelmed by its superb graphics. I could control a beautifully crafted avatar which I could customise. The avatars there were unique as it could move around, and shifts about and fidgets when left standing too long. It even breathes!

Not forgetting the environment that can be explored. Breathtaking. The sunrise, sunsets and starry nights are as lovely as the real thing.

I started out looking like this the first few days in Secondlife. I tried to make her look similar to me. Her hair, her facial features, her skin. She looks prettier than me I think 😛

You could even customise the clothes here, which is fantastic. I made the bear tee shirt myself just a few days after I joined.

Secondlife is beautiful …

There are always many interesting people to meet and talk to. I’d almost always meet nice people on my travels.

That’s Krysss on our deck

That’s Duo in the living room

Genevieve, Princessia, me and Cartcart

Lyle and me at a coffee house

Cartcart and me – Partners in crime

Cart acquired a beautiful plot of land facing the sea. I really love it there, as it was so peaceful and beautiful – a perfect place to live at. I found myself wishing that we were staying there together in real life. We spend some weeks building our house and was very proud of it when it was nearly complete.

There’s always things that could be done in Secondlife and that’s exciting to me. There’s always much adventures and hopefully, more to come up 🙂

Secondlife is celebrating its 2nd anniversary and is giving out FREE accounts. Sign up! Don’t even think twice about it! Sign up! You’ll love it there. And you could refer me, rinaz bijoux if you like. Hope to see you there 🙂

You can sign up here. Website is 18 and above only.

Kabish kabish Kabish!

There are days when I want to do this.

I had someone comment to me, saying that women are so emotional. That they have misplaced loyalty. Thats why they are always taken for granted.

Woah. I saw red to that. I dont have the statistics to back it up but I just thought that it was an unjustified statement. How true is that? I’m sure we all dont go around acting all crazy, and hyper and spout out emotional outbursts. Oh wait a minute. Maybe we do. Once a month. But that doesnt count.

Mr Chako, our GP teacher quipped in class on day about how three category of people get better pay at work, namely the more attractive people, the males and the taller people.

Being of a non supermodel proportions, a non male and non tall, that statement made me a little apprehensive. What about the common people? Grrr!

*karate chops*

Anyway, take a look at my new desk 🙂

Pretty barren at the moment, I could put the two bears that I usually bring to work. Or some posters or something. Maybe not so soon. Been much too busy with work to concentrate on the appearance of the table.

There’s so much to do! Installation of CD’s in the computer lab, updating the barcoding inventory, creating of newsletters, helping of teachers, doing programming (something I’m not that fluent) helping out in the cca’s and more more stuff and on top of that conduct multimedia lessons…

*faints*

The strange part is, that now that I’ve already had a job, I still receive emails offering me of a job. Funny how when in June when I was bumming around, looking for a job, nothing arrived for about 3 weeks and on the other hand now the reverse.

Oh well.

I still am missing my west spring kids and my colleagues. One of my students called me up and demanded to know why I wasnt in West Spring anymore. How can one not feel a tinge of emotion?

“Cherrr .. Why arent you our IT teacher anymore???”
I could only go … “WAAAAH!!!”

I dropped by school for a while today just to say hello for a bit and had lunch at Sheng Siong with Peter, Jane and Poniah. I miss that camaraderie. 🙂

It was sweet, just hanging out with old friends. I love it.

Library and shopping center and food fun

I broke another shoe today. I give up. I guess I’m not fated to wear strappy shoes. They all die under my touch. I was walking on my way to work when the strap of my left shoe decided to break off. And I limped my way through the office. I had to use about ten rubber bands to fasten the bottom part to my feet.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Good grief!

I wondered how I would survive the day with such a fashionable footware. So during lunch break, I rushed off to the nearest shoe shop as fast as I could. Which wasn’t very fast since I could only limp with my rubber band shoes.

Then the strap of my right shoe decided to break off too. I must say, that, that was the first time I ever encountered rubber band shoes in my quarter of a century (plus one) years of existence.

Anyway, I got me a pair of flatties. I hope it’ll last me longer than any of my heels couldn’t.

Doesn’t this look interesting? I love the packaging of this. There is a man with a huge mouth. The mouth acts like a window to see the contents of the packaging. Bro loves poking the packet to make the content move around.

We went to Jurong East library since I saw a flyer that showcased digital designs by the Yusuf Ishak Secondary School students. I hoped that there were some workshops on the techniques. But upon reaching there, there was only a display. I was a little disappointed, but admired the wonderful work done by these talented teenagers.

I saw teenagers studying and I was amazed by the amount of graffiti on the chairs. It used to be pure beige the first time I saw it in mid 2004 and now it was covered with scribblings. Bro thinks that it was intentional.

We did a spot of reading and decided to have dinner at IMM and we walked past a carnival called “Generation Day” where the entire family, including the grandparents and grandchildren spent time together. The whole stretch along Jurong East Interchange was extremely crowded.

We then took the shuttle bus to IMM – the hypermart

I was amazed by the sheer amount of people there. Granted that I haven’t been there for a long while, but the place was bustling! I never imagined that the quiet shopping centre in the 90’s would turn out to be so active now.

After dinner, we walked around and chanced upon these many Osim Isqueeze about. I gave it a try and I quite like it.

There was a gathering over my aunt’s place on Sunday afternoon. Food galore! I love tapioca leaves with peanut sauce. Yum … I felt full and contented till dinner.

It seems that family gatherings are the time when it is obligatory to show off the babies,

Cute 🙂

Cute 🙂

Well, that’s all for the moment, I had better get to bed now for some snoozin .. Good night 🙂

Marina’s Debut

Picture of Rudy and Fais from my photography class

Am feeling quite tired now that I’ve started working. its definitely a change with the new routine of having to wake up early and get to work in the morning. Working all afternoon and then going to night classes straight away and study till late evening … Only reaching home at about 11.15pm or so. The same thing would be the same for the next day almost every weekday.

Anyways, been spending the week being trained about the proceedures about the company and now I’m attached to Shuqun Secondary School.

What I liked about the school was that it only took about 30 minutes to go there and I had a direct bus there too. Not bad. I dont have to suffer seat numbness, in the long bus journeys to the new school now.

I met the current trainer that I would be replacing. His name is Farid.

Farid’s a very friendly, and knowledgeable person. He patiently showed me the school, introduced me to some of the staff of the school there, the company portal and the duties that I was supposed to do.

So much to do! *stretches*

Anyway, there was a teachers meeting today and Farid took the chance to make it to be my debut to the entire staff. I took to chance to snap some pictures of the staff there too.

New people to meet and introduce all over again … I really miss West spring my kids, the teachers and staff there … Sigh …

But anyway, the amazing thing is, that I chanced upon a lady and I looked at her, hey .. she looks pretty familliar and she looked at me and thought the same too.

“Were you from Bukit View Secondary School?”
*gasps*
“I think you taught me english or literature”
“Wow!”

Her name is Mrs Silva and if thats not amazing, just a few minutes after that I chanced upon another lady

“Mrs Soong!” I cried out! Mrs Soong was my science teacher back while I was in Bukit View Secondary. She was a wonderful teacher, so enthusiastic and dynamic. I enjoyed her lessons tremendously.

Well, I wonder how life would be like in the new school. We’ll just have to see.

Bwahh ..what happened to my photography skills? Everything went bad. All of the pictures are blur!

And some of the pictures are much too underexposed!

BAH! HUMBURGER!

And then Rudy showed me how to increase the ISO and reduce the aperture and shutter speed. Ohh … And the pictures looked much nicer … A little too late when the model was gone ..but ah well, its learning through mistakes …

Here are a few of the nicer pictures. I increased the ISO to 1600 and set the Aperture to 20 with a shutter speed of 4.5 and it seemed nice even without the use of the studio flash. Lovely. Lovely. I’ll have to try this technique more.

Well, thats all for now, I’m going to pass out on the bed first.

Yay! I got a job!

Amazing. I’m still mildly stunned at this point of time of writing. You are now reading the blog of a newly appointed Multimedia Educator for AsknLearn.

It was one of the most memorable days that I’ll never forget. I had a call yesterday, while I was searching for iEnabler. I reached Outram Mrt Station at about 3.45. I’m quite early! I thought to myself. Now all I have to do is to find a landmark and I’ll be at the building pronto. I walked past Pearl Centre and asked a man, do you know where Teck Lim road is? Nope. And I then I asked another person. I don’t know. Not sure. So I called up the office to enquire about the area.

Do you see This Fashion? Yup! Okay, walked past it and you’ll see a temple, and then you’ll see a hotel and walk past that hotel and we are just there.

Okay, I got it, thanks!

So I walked past this fashion. And walked. And walked and walked. Wow, this is such a long walk! Is this really the right area? I reached Chinatown and walked and saw the Sri Mariamman temple and thought to myself okay, here’s the temple. I don’t see a hotel though. I was feeling quite tired after walking in my heels in the warm afternoon sun. And I felt dishevelled and really flabbergasted. I tried to call the office again. You don’t see the temple? But I’m right next to the temple. Do you know where I should go to? No? Nevermind, I’ll just take the cab there.

Right after I put the phone down, there was a call for me.

Hello? Bzz Bzz Bzz. Would you like to come down for an interview?
Bzz Bzz, take but 91, Buona Vista, Bzz Bzz

Uhh .. wait, what? (snaps out of daze) Could you hold on a while. Let me get a pen. (scribble scribble) Okay, see you tomorrow at 10 am.

I tried to flag some cabs, and there wasn’t any slowing down! Even those who did slow down didn’t know where Teck Lim Road was! In my heart I was feeling murderous. Luckily there was a nice taxi driver who stopped to call up his friend to ask where the area was. And an old uncle, as well as this nice man who was relaxing in his van who took the time to actually check his directory and show me where to go to. To all of you, I’m extremely grateful. There are wonderful people out there.

Anyway, at last I found the place and had an interview with Ken, the manager there and left after about 2 hours. And … I saw a hotel. I continued walking and saw another temple and then, I walked a little bit more and what I saw made me really angry.

It was the same spot where I called the office. It took me 30 minutes to walk all the way around the area when it should only take me 5 minutes to reach here! I was stumped. With my feet aching, and feeling uncomfortably sticky, I felt like digging a hole and hiding myself in it.

I mean, seriously, look at this:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Black route is initial route, red route to go home

*heart aches*

Anyway, this morning, I went to Asknlearn, not really expecting anything since in my mind I was thinking of Mastereign and I heard of Asknlearn’s reputation about being very discerning in the choice of trainers.

But I showed my portfolio, both hard copy and the soft copy and after a while, they asked me to go into the office and do an aptitude test.

They seemed impressed by the score from the aptitude test and were keen to hire me. I was still a little hesitant and did a quick calculation in my head. Should I still continue with mastereign, freelancing? Or should I take this offer up doing full time. I quicked weighed the pros and cons and decided that I’d take the offer up. A pity actually, I really would love to work in Mastereign. If only they had full time there.

Anyway, I start on Monday to see the new school and to get to know the staff and the locale. I hope it’ll be good 🙂

Anyway, I’ll stop here for the moment, and let my bears narrate the rest of the blog. Ciao!

Woo! I’ve been so bored of staying at home all the time! I’m so glad big miss is taking us out finally!

Of riding test, job huntings and blood donation

Just who the heck are these people?

14th June is world blood donor day. I was invited to join in a picnic dinner and a movie by the esplanade after having donated my blood in December.

My sister, Diana and I took the train to City Hall and met Nazry at about 8 pm and we had a simple picnic dinner of hot dogs, nuggets and jelly by the riverside. As we sat down and enjoyed the evening breeze and the beautiful lights of the buildings, Nazry told me about his adventure while taking a picture by the Merlion

While snapping a picture with his new camera phone, he happened to slip and unfortunately fell down. But what made him angry was that there were no one asking how he was or inquired about his well being.

What bustards. He quipped. I sat there wondering why there wasn’t anyone helping him up. How strange. Poor Nazry.

I then told Nazry about what happened to me in the afternoon. I had a call yesterday afternoon. And I was a little dazed.

Hello, May I speak to Marina?
Speaking
Are you free for an interview tomorrow at 3 pm?
Who is this calling please?
My name is Bhapy, and I’m calling from Mastereign.
Mastereign? Yes yes yes. I’m free, Yes yes!
Great! I’ll see you tomorrow. Its at 133, Cecil Street

As I hanged up, I pondered why the name Cecil Street was very familiar to me. And then it hit me. I did spend quite some while over this area. My first “job” was over at this area. I was young and just fresh out of Jurong Institute with absolutely no job experience and found an advertisement for office workers. I was interviewed by a trading company to be a telemarketer.

It wasn’t a pleasant experience. All day long, making phone calls to people that I didn’t know and I had absolutely zero knowledge of trading. After a month I quit after seeing how I really don’t see myself being in this line.

Cecil street was also where I joined Sriwana, a cultural Malay dance organization for a couple of months. I enjoyed my practises there till mum thought that it was affecting my studies and forbade me from continuing.

I also spent weekends here studying my advanced diploma in computer studies in informatics.  To be honest, I think the teaching there totally killed my interest in C programming and I pretty much flunked that subject.

How could I forget this area? A lot of memorable memories here. And I walked and I remember the buildings that I’ve been in as well as see the many changes done to the area. Lovely urban area with a touch of rural charm. I should have a photo shoot here sometime.

Anyway, I was really excited to be called down. I’ve been anticipating as I was really excited by the type of course that I would be teaching. The impressive website that they had made me solidify my desire even more. The entire week I had the thought in my mind “Call me … Call me … Mastereign … Call me…” *laugh*

During the interview, Bhappy, the human resource interviewed all three interviewers together (that was a first!) And we talked about our portfolios and our work experiences and the type of courses that was conducted there. Amazing to find out that they did holistic and soft skill courses like adventure camps, grooming courses, even dance. I was impressed and loved the company’s vision and professionalism. “Hire me … Hire me… Mastereign … Hire me …”

I saw the other two’s portfolio and they were really good too. Looks like a tough competition since they were from the design industry. Me, on the other hand, was self taught … I only had my 5 years experience as an added advantage.

After the interview, I left for home and not 15 minutes I stepped out of the building I had a call from Mastereign again asking me if I could teach for about 2 week.

Of course I said yes!

So now, you’re looking at a freelance trainer 🙂 The pay wasn’t that much at the moment, but it’s not so bad. I love this organization! At least I can breathe a little easier now.

Whoopee!

Coming back to the blood donation event, after we had our dinner, we went to the Padang to watch an open air movie. They were playing ‘shark tales’, and we sat on the mats provided with other families. It was so lovely. I really love these type of atmosphere. It was just like the botanic garden trip I had last month. Only this time, I had my siblings with me 🙂

The movie ended at about 9.30 pm and deciding that the night was much too early, we proceeded to go to the Raffles City shopping centre to just walk about. And we saw lego displays there!

We love lego!

Isn’t this spider totally awesome?

Harry potter meets the sith meets the eccentric blogger

At about 10 pm or so, we left back home by the crowded train.

Buying the ticket

Rock on!

Horribly crowded train

I wonder what she was thinking

By the way, I flunked my riding test. Yes I flunked it on Monday. And I blame it on the rain making everything slippery. Not giving up though, I’m going to try and try and try again till I pass 🙂

Nearly 3 am the time I’m writing this entry. And I am supposed to have another interview tomorrow at 10 am … *chuckles* Oh dear.
