About a man I call my dearest (Part Two)

The first words he said to me :

Hi
Hi
So … How are you?
I’m fine, very fine.

And I smiled and looked at him, so amazed that we finally met. I told him about my long flight, and of my lost luggage. And confidently he went to the enquiry counter and spoke to the lady there and reassured me that it would be ok.

We got in his car. I looked at the driver seat being on the left and how he drove at the right lane and overtook at the left lane. I took in the sights in front of me from the highway to the fields that we passed by.

I cant help but to stare at him as he was driving. Seeing his face and how he talked. English wasn’t his native language so he spoke slowly and asked me every now and then, “What’s the correct phrase for … ” and “Is that right?”

I noticed that Roman buildings were full of graffiti and asked him about it. He tells me that it was common to have one of those. Doesn’t anyone clean them up? Some try to repaint it, but in time, it will be drawn on again and people just gave up trying.

We reached the place and he hugged me tightly and we had our first kiss. It was so lovely to feel his lips. So warm, and inviting and delicious. I liked it.

He let me rest and soon after, he received a call from his mobile. My luggage was here! We took it up and I showed him some of the things that he wanted but couldn’t get in Rome.

And here we have …

Tada! Baba’s Curry Powder.
Tada! Fresh Curry Leaves.
Tada! Love Seeds of the Orient.
And a small gift I got him while on my photoshoot trip to Bugis.

He wanted to cook curry. After seeing on the webcam, at the curry he tried to cook previously, I reckoned that he would like to try something more authentic. I doubted that Rome had these types of items.

So how do you cook this? Oh the leaves are to be placed in the end of the cooking stage? Oh those love seeds. I would love to be a child and play with these. I could plant these in the Villa Pamphili Park and in time, people will enjoy the trees.

He let me rest for some while before we headed up to a little place called Gianicolo. We walked to a ‘punch and judy’ box with children watching the show and then we had ice cream and talked. It was lovely, the hazelnut ice cream that I had. Smooth and creamy …. Mmm…

He then showed me the beautiful sights overlooking the different landmarks that Rome was famous for. By then I was feeling chilly, even though it was August and was supposed to be summer. It was so nice to cuddle up to him. I liked it. 🙂

I woke up to take a shower and saw this:

What’s that?
That’s a bidet – that’s where you shower babies in.
Oh … that makes sense

The rest of the days was spent travelling around Rome. On Sunday, he took me to see the weekend flea market. We first went to the train terminal to get tickets at one of the vendors there. These tickets will allow us to travel via Train, Tram and buses. I looked at the different sights in front of me. Many dark skinned women in skirts passed by chatting in a foreign language, wearing trinkets on their bodies.

Those are gypsies, he said. People who roam around selling items as their means. Most dont have any fixed jobs or education.

We took the tram to go to Via Trastrevere and reached Porta Portese to see the flea market. What a sight! There were so many stalls that the eye could see and what ever that you wanted, you could get here. I saw some stalls full of clothing, some full of toiletries, some full of shoes. There were even some stalls selling antique items and furniture.

But what really caught my attention was the diversity of people there. There were African men selling shoes and bags, Chinese people selling electrical items and what made it all amazing was how fluently they spoke in Italian. I was mightily impressed!

We stopped by to look at some of the lovely paintings that were being displayed there. There were even some Asian Trinkets like Jade necklaces and Oriental Hair combs.

Psst … I could find something like this back home so easily. I was surprised to see something that was so common being displayed and regarded so highly. It was strange even.

The beautiful streets of Trastrevere

We then had lunch at L’insalata Ricca which literally means “Rich Salads” I had an egg salad while he had Gnocchi and we had Sparkling Mineral Water. I tried his delicious potato dumpling in tomato sauce and then I was shocked to see the amount of salad and the size of my plate when it arrived.

I can’t finish this! Argh!
(laughing) Dont worry, no one’s going to scold you for not finishing it
Yeah, but in Asian tradition, if you don’t finish your food, it will cry.
Uh? (teasing) Aww I see those corn crying. See these olives, I can see the tears

He then ordered Scamorza which was a type of cow cheese which was baked. I tried a little. It was dry-ish, smoky, rubbery, but still tasty. I was still struggling with my salad. I finally admit to defeat. I left the restaurant feeling extremely bloated.

Marina, wait a while, I’d like to use the water fountain.

I gave it a try, the water was cold and refreshing. There are many water fountains like these all over the town of Rome.

We walked by the ancient ruins of Largo Argentina with a cat sanctuary and I try to imagine what life was like during those times. We reached the Altare Della Patria and I was amazed by the sheer size of the monument. It was super huge. I wondered how such a huge monument was created in times when forklifts weren’t created yet.

There was a soldier display there. He tells me that like the London Soldiers, they aren’t supposed to talk or move about while they are on duty. They are supposed to guard the fire that has been constantly burning to remember the fallen soldiers. He added cheekily that the soldiers are adding in extra time for the passing over, just to play for the tourists.

We went in to see the different architectural displays and then walked by the fori imperiali area and I soaked in the wonderful sights in front of me. So many people relaxing and strolling around in the lovely afternoon sun. He was complaining about the heat though and tried to hide in the shadows whenever he can. I chuckled at that. Weakling! This isn’t hot. It’s so comfortable. And I proceeded to dance in the golden sunshiny afternoon.

A lovely quiet church we stopped by at

Yes, traffic is always like this. Scary.

In the evening, we went to a restaurant called the L’antica Roma and we had a pizza each. I liked the place, beautiful ambiance and beautiful people were around, friends chatting and relaxing in the cool evening. We ordered our meals from the interestingly bald and burly waiter. He ordered pizza with cherry tomatoes and I had a mushroom pizza. Again, it was so huge that by the time I tried to finish half of the pizza, as delicious as it was, I was bursting to the seams. Argh! More crying food!

Again, we had sparkling mineral water and I noticed that practically every table had them. It was bottled and packed and served like wine. How classy. I was beginning to appreciate the lovely taste of the water. It was slightly effervescent without being too bubbly like Perrier and yummy, quite different from Evian.

Dessert? Tiramisu maybe?
How about Gelato with Fragola?
Always room for dessert 😛

And we chatted joked and had fun as I enjoyed the night air. I was really enjoying his company and loved spending time together with him. As we walked hand in hand, it felt so natural and comfortable, like we knew each other for years and years. I was looking forward to days to come. Oh how beautiful the day was!

About a man I call my dearest

The first time I encountered him was a chance meeting in Secondlife. We had a chat together and then we met again the next day, and the next. Initially I got a tad nerved because it seemed that everytime I logged in, he would be there, private messaging me. To the point of me getting nervous everytime I logged in. I didnt know him that well, and gotten a bit jaded of internet relationships.

And then my computer died. I wasnt able to log in Secondlife anymore and had to borrow my brother’s laptop for internet connection. Unfortunately, his laptop isnt capable or running the graphics intensive 3D world. I had to be content with just hanging out in the Secondlife Forums to get my updates and chat with other secondlifers there.

And a few days later, he was there in the forums. I was so surprised to see him there. But slowly I got to know him better and saw his caring character, the way that he is always very perceptive of people and how concerned he is towards his friends and the way that he thought. I was very drawn to it.

And in time, we got closer and closer and became a couple. We were inseperable. We talked to each other every day via msn or sms’ed each other every now and then.

Months passed by being in bliss. And then we wondered how it was if we met each other in real life. Would we still have a connection? Would we still like each other after seeing our physical selves? We had to know.

He helped to get me a ticket in July and against all sanity and logic, I decided to go. I smsed my close friends one day before the flight. Some were shocked but they were all excited and happy for me and I couldnt help but feel touched.

Juli, Geri and my brother Nazry was there to see me off. I was feeling butterflies in my tummy by then. What am I doing? This is crazy! I cant believe I’m doing this! Geri calmed me down in saying that everything will be alright once I get in the plane. I still couldnt help but feel nervewrecked. Nazry told me that he was jealous, you’re going there and I’m stuck here in boring Singapore.

I reached the gates and waved to my friends feeling the butterflies and yet excited at the adventure in front of me at the same time.

Couldnt sleep in the plane at all. With the turbulence, it made the plane shake alot. Being unaccustomed to long flights I couldnt adjust myself to rest. It didnt do well to my already nervous mind with many questions. I looked around at the many people who were sitting docile at their chairs.

Fish or Chicken?
Uh? (woken up from my thoughts)
Fish or Chicken for your dinner?
Uhm … Do you have vegetarian?
No, but let me check for you.
(walks towards the cabin)
I’m sorry, we dont have any
Then I dont want to eat.
Are you sure? Come try the fish at least
Ok ok

I stared at the tv screen in front of me and tried to rest as best as I could.

After a long 12 hour flight. I got up dazed and bleary at the Charles Degaulle Airport in Paris. Decided to wash my face and brush my teeth for a little bit before heading off to the transit flight to Rome.

And before I knew it. I was late for the transit flight with less than 10 minutes to go. I didnt realise that the Airport was so huge. I spent a long time trying to look for the place. Everyone spoke French (the only french I knew was what came out of perfume bottles)

Luckily, the man at the airport gave me a replacement ticket to board the next flight in about an hours time. I tried to sms him with my mobile but that didnt work since my phone couldnt work with global roaming. I tried to use the payphones and I peered helplessly at the french speaking phones.

Lost in France

The place was crowded with people and I observed the people walking. People smoking around the airport terminal and felt how chilly it was there. So many people of different nationalities were there walking around. It was interesting to look around.

At length I took the transit flight and arrived in Rome two hours later. I tried to look for my luggage but couldnt find it! I approached the man at the counter.

Scusi. My bag. Where? (Shows luggage ticket)
Parlare Italiano?
Huh?
(some words I couldnt catch)

He pointed me towards the lost and found and I thanked him and went there. Speaking in slow english, I described my bag, its contents and gave my contact details when it would be found.

By then, I was feeling quite haphazard since it was nearly 1pm when I was supposed to reach there at 9.30am on the original flight. Would he still be there? Would he leave thinking that I would not arrive?

I received a sms from him and it said

🙁

Dont leave, please dont leave yet, I’m right here, I thought to myself

I exited the area to enter the arrival hall and walked around to look for him. And that is when I saw him. He looked so much more warmer, and real. And as our eyes crossed, we instantly recognized each other. We walked up to each other and hugged each other dearly and time just seemed to stop.

(To be continued)

Photography in bugis

Went out the entire day with Fais on Sunday for an outdoor shoot with him.

Tried to call up Kathy but only got a voice message instead. So we proceeded anyway and here are some of the pictures that I took. I’m loving it 🙂

I’ve always wanted to do a photoshoot in Bugis Street where Masjid Sultan was. I found that the atmosphere there was like time stood still with the old shophouses and the people around.

Its like you’ve stepped back to the 1960’s. And then you notice the vehicles, the clothes of the other’s and the high rise buildings in the background.

We started at the fabric shops. Fais was admiring the beautiful cloths and we chatted with the people there. PR! Fais told me, its an added advantage to making someone stand out.

M: But I’m kinda shy … I get embarassed.
F: So? I’m a guy, and I feel shy to ask a girl to pose for me sometimes
M: What if they scold me?
F: They wont scold you if you knew the right ways
M: What are the right ways?
F: First, you have to ask permission first to see if they are willing

F:Sometimes, you have to guage if the person is friendly or no. When you talk to him you’ll see how his reaction to you and you respond appropriately.

Hello! You’re bringing a camera? Why arent you taking a picture of me?

F: There’s your chance knocking to you already! Go!

Every year, a year older …

One year older … closer to the 30 year mark …

Its not really the number that scares me … but the things that I never did and the achievements that I’ve never reached .. and expectations by other people …

And what have I done so far?

The re-opening of Taman Jurong Community Center

30th July was the official launch of the re-opening of the Taman Jurong Community Centre.

With the immense amount of people that turned up at the event, it was a blast and felt so festive too. The streets were closed and there were street performance, fairs, and concerts and other activities that went together simultaneously. It was truly a night to remember.

When we started walking there, there were a few kids who were trying out the rock climbing display

Some kids tried the abseiling display. love abseling!

Runway photoshoot lesson and dinner with my classmates

I took these picture during last Wednesday’s photo-shoot session :

Oi! I said pay attention! Don’t clown around Marina!

Isn’t Zila super adorable? Zila agreed to be my model for Wednesday and her pics turned out pretty good. She wasn’t used to modelling, but was very curious, Fais, my photography instructor needed to direct her how to pose, and how to walk and then, she was groomed! Zila the model!

However, Zila was extremely hyperactive, and was jumping everywhere, and made a lot of funny faces and that seemed to make Fais a little giddy. *chuckles* It was too funny seeing the professional photographer at work, with the overly bubbly Zila.

I learnt how to do runway photo-shoot for today where there will be a moving subject walking back and forth. It wasn’t as simple since scientifically, when there is a specific source of light and a moving object, the lighting will effect how illuminated a person looks

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Thus, I’d have to change my aperture and I had to change it doubly fast since the subject is walking and wont wait for me, not like studio photography.

That’s where I found out where my awesome Canon EOS 350D has a minor fault to it. I had to press a button as well as press the slider at the same time to change the aperture so that meant that I had to waste time, putting the camera down to fiddle with it. Unlike the Nikon model where you could just use the slider to change the aperture immediately. :

You should just change your camera, Fais teased me. Yeah sure, and I made a face just like Zila.

Anyway, if there are anyone still keen, there are still the last two spots open for a free photo-shoot. Email me, makawaru(nospam)@gmail.com

When : 3rd August 2005

Where : Radin Mas Community Center (Tiong Bahru Mrt Station)

The Design and Technical room

Interesting week at work lately, teachers has been asking me to take photographs of them, their lessons, the school. Looks like they are taking advantage of the fact that I have an awesome 350D .. *chuckles* I don’t mind taking the pictures, honest. I just feel that I’m more of the Audio/Video/ crew more than an IT support.

I learnt how to shoot a video this week! That was pretty cool. A teacher, asked me to shoot a video of her lesson so that she could review the way she taught to improve herself. It was a hassle trying to find the (one and only) video camera in the school, trying to find Hi-8 tapes in the school (they didn’t provide it!)and finding the battery charger (yikes!) since the battery was all drained.

I learnt how to transfer the video from the cam to the camera, and then convert the video to a vcd format. I’m so proud of myself 🙂 I think I’ll try to find my Adobe Premier book from which I tried to learn a few years back. I could do loads of fun things with video, I’m sure.

And just in time for the school video awards too. Awesome! I remember Saiful, my ex colleage talking to me about collaborating to make a school video since he specialised in music and I could do IT and was describing some of the scenes and shots. We’re not working together any more, but the dream is still alive, I could do something about that.

Singapore’s national day is coming up soon, beautiful lights are put out right outside the streets where I would usually walk home from my train ride.

Brandon, Sunny, Nasir and Steve – Did they all plan to wear black tonight?

V is for peace!

I just came back from supper at Newton Circus with Rosdee, Diane and Christine after our night-class. I wouldn’t normally eat there with the super expensive price tag, but it was not everyday that we had a chat together.

We had fried kangkong and satay to eat communally and we were enjoying our supper when all of a sudden, Christine asked me “So, when are you getting married Marina?” “You ARE serious with him aren’t you? Have you made plans?” I didn’t know how to answer her. Rosdee tried to come to my rescue by asking me the same question in a more polite way, and that was when Christine replied back “I’m a forward person, I don’t believe in hiding things and I care about people and just want to know about them better”

She must have seen my face cringing up at the question and then she replied “I respect your privacy though” and we quickly found another topic to talk about.

And that was when the topic was diverted to religion. How Rosdee’s eyes were all lighted up and he began his speech.

Bla Bla Bla bla

Uh huh? Yeah

Bla bla bla bla bla! Hoo hee hoo hah! Huargh hee hah!

Hmm … Oklah

Are you making fun of me, Marina?

Wouldn’t dream of it. Peace! *laughs*

They are nice people. Diane tells me about her dream to become a lawyer, Rosdee wants a better life and so does Christine. I hope we all do good next year for our A level examinations. God willing. 🙂

Oh my goodness. Less than one week to go. I’m so excited! And I’m not even prepared!

Get lost!

Spent a wonderfully relaxing day watching Lost.

After trying to download the entire series with Bittorent and Limewire without success, I had to practically pull Clement’s (the school technical assistant and my newly appointed best friend) arm and he gave he the entire series in 2 DVD’s! Sans the last two episodes since it didn’t fit in the DVD, and I downloaded those with no problem.

Super fantastic show. I enjoyed it immensely. It’s a show about a group of survivors who survived a plane crash on a strange and mysterious island. There were several flash backs of what their lives were before the crash and the discoveries of the island’s secrets. There were some creepy bits like the mysterious black mist that goes around.

Just what are those debris? Creepy

Almost as creepy as the scene with 3 men and a baby

But every one knows that the little boy by the window, who is supposed to be the victim of a murder, is a hoax.

21st July is racial harmony day, in remembrance to the racial riots that happened in Singapore in 1964, when many people died from that most unfortunate incident.

Schools here would usually have an event for this day, some schools would put up a show or a festival. I saw that West Spring had a large joint festival together with 2 other schools. It sure looked like fun.

Racial harmony day sounds dandy, but in my personal opinion, it shouldnt just be a one day event where people would wear their traditional costumes. The main point that the different races be understanding and considerate to each other.

Not to say that there isn’t any cultural understanding here, the situation here has improved considerably since the times when Maria Hertogh who was taken away from her Malay Muslim adopted mother back home to the Netherlands.

Anyhow, my point is, Racial Harmony should be practised daily and not just be a carnival that everyone forgets the next day. Just like Valentines day which is a celebration of love, should be practised everyday instead of just once a day. The fact that people *need* a reason to celebrate their appreciation for their partner is a little farce to me. But thats my own opinion

(steps off her soap box)

Was a busy day for me, the entire day was done taking the picture of the teachers, the entire department. I got to borrow the tripod stand from the AVA room (I found it quite fun to use, a tad heavy but it was still pretty ok)

And then I suddenly find myself being the ‘official’ photographer for the school. Teachers would be asking me to take photographs of their activities like the science show, and the national day (I can’t make it for that one though) and the staff department photograph. I accepted them all gladly. Loved taking photographs. It’ll give me more practise with my awesome camera which I totally adore. I’d like to get new lens when I can get my hands on one. Maybe a tamron Af18-200mm.

I was just looking over at the different cd’s that I borrowed from the library. I borrowed this cd, ‘Learn Malay’ by eurotalk interactive with the intention of seeing if it would be good for Cart to use since I have no patience to teach him myself.

Unfortunately, the programme had a lot of glaring mistakes in them, and me, being a Malay found it much too disconcerting.

Bolehkah saya pakai telefon awak?

In Malay, pakai means wear (clothes) so the meaning of ‘May I wear your telephone’ was shocking. The correct sentence to use is:

Bolehkah saya guna telefon awak? Or Bolehkah saya mengguna telefon anda?

I swear, I’m not nitpicking. But I cannot recommend this cd-rom because of the errors which I believe would be minimized by having it tested and checked by a native speaker.
