Participating in the Maratona Di Roma

I was keen to do something different this year.

By chance, I stumbled upon the Maratona di Roma website and got very intrigued. I’m not fit enough to do competitive running, but I saw that there was a 4km fun run.

I didn’t want to go alone. Asking around, it didn’t seem like anyone would be interested. Fortunately for me, at the last moment, Cart agreed to accompany me!

I was touched since firstly, Cart isn’t really a morning person and secondly, Cart isn’t really an exercise person. And he’s doing this just for me 🙂

Anticipating that there will be loads of people at the venue, Cart and I left the car and took the subway instead where there were already a bustling of activities with people in exercise outfits taking the train with us.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

By the time we reached the Colosseo station, there were already a crunch of people – people participating in the run, people supporting them, bystanders and confused tourists. It was a disorientation trying to get to the registration station. The huge crowd was really something that I didn’t foresee.

After walking around, we finally found the registration counter where Cart and I paid 7 euro each to participate and we received an official tshirt each.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

We also got a blue sling bag and a bottle of water between us, but we felt cheated. We should have gotten two!

And then we queued up with the rest of the conglomeration walking towards the starting point.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

I’m not sure if you are able to see this, but there were heaps of clothes, mainly jackets being hung at the metal fences. Some of them were branded outfits. I am kicking myself for not snapping a picture, but there were a number of cleaners who picked these clothes, threw them on the floor and swept them away as if it were rubbish.

I was shouting out, “Gratis! Gratis!” and was tempted to pick a couple of free jackets for myself.

It was a slow walk towards the starting point. I had time to look around me. There were a number of interesting looking people. I spotted out this guy on this high wheel bicycle with what looks like Topo Gigio plushie.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

There was another guy I spotted wearing a pizza maker outfit with his face painted with the Italian flag.

Eventually, we reached the starting point and we were off! Everyone started to go faster – some brisk walked, some jogged … and some headed to the portable toilet?!

Maratona Di Roma 2010

In any case, I found it really interesting to run through the touristy areas of Rome which was closed for the day. I was amazed to find myself jogging in the main square facing the Vittorio Emanuele Monument which would normally be busy with traffic.

Regardless, I was basking in the energy. Everyone seemed so full of life and just enjoying themselves.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

There were so many different types of people there – adults, kids, even pets with their own number tags. I could hear different accents thus there were plentiful of participants from the overseas.

The interesting bit is that, at every corner that we passed through, there would always be a band playing. It was quite amusing.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

People would actually slow down to enjoy and clap to the music.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

It kind of reminds me of my Wii Fit plus where there would be people clapping and motivating you to go on.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

By the 3rd kilometre, I was feeling rather tired and actually warm even in the 15 degrees Celsius temperature. I wondered where the end point was. But Cart and I motivated each other to keep on going. And at long length, Cart and I finally reached the end point!

We were both feeling tired and looking rather unglamorous, but I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. Victory camwhore session! We probably look unattractive, but I like seeing how naturally flushed we both looked. Organic blusher!

Maratona Di Roma 2010

Unfortunately, I look really horrible in this picture so I’ll just cover my chin with a Photoshop flower.

We walked to the top of a hill near the Colosseo where it looked as if there was a mass picnic party there, with people lying around in the grass. It kind of reminds me of the WOMAD concert I attended some years back.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

There were several tents where you could get a couple of freebies.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

Like Yakult! I grew up with this. We drank one a day when we could. By the way, its interesting how Italians pronounce it. Here it is pronounced as Yaa-Koolt.

Anyway, here is what the Italian Package looks like.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

Buon Giorno!

And here is Cart’s favourite milk. The man prefers to drink only this brand if he could.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

I don’t really drink much milk since I think that I’m a little lactose intolerant. But *ahem* as a good wife, I took a carton for him since I paid 7 euro for this run anyway.

There were also a number of other exhibits, like this Judo demonstration and a number of non profit organizations like the red cross association. Cart and I saw a booth where they were selling items to help the children of Guatemala.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

I chanced upon this very very cool aerobics routine and I was very tempted to take off my jacket and join in. I spent a full minute wondering if I could join in or not.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

But Cart was feeling exhausted and I was still dubious and preferred to start at the beginning instead of the end, so reluctantly we left the area.

And as we crossed the road to head home, we chanced upon the paralympics segment. This guy here was the first to finish the marathon. I don’t remember his name, but Cart told me that he used to be a driver for the Formula 1 race.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

I think the guys in the yellow jackets were the volunteers. I wonder how one becomes a volunteer? Because I’d like to be one too.

And we also lucky because just a few minutes later, we got to see the first person to complete the insane 42 km marathon. It’s already tiring enough to run 4 kilometers, let alone 42!

Yes, yes, the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

Maratona Di Roma 2010

But all through the end of the race, he never lost his stride and never slowed down. It was impressive. What’s interesting to notice was that the next 5 to complete the race were dark skinned too. I guess the best runners are black.

I really enjoyed myself at my first mass run in Rome and I’m glad that Cart shared this experience with me. Looking forward to the next one 🙂

To end, I post this picture of me, posing with a giant bottle of latte.

Roman skies look fake

There is a scene in the Truman Show where Truman sails away in a boat. I noticed how pretty the sky looked like. Eventually the bow of the boat hits a dome and broke the painted sky. It was a fake sky! And Truman spent a moment, looking amazed.

Living in Rome gives me feel like Truman sometimes. Because the skies here look fake. Like a painting.

Roman Skies

This was taken a few weeks ago while Cart and I were out looking for new furnitures for the house. The sky was so vivid that we spent at least 10 minutes taking pictures of the sunset.

Roman Skies

And this is in Gianicolo. If you are ever in Rome, Gianicolo hill is a pretty place to be as it overlooks many of the monuments in Rome.

I keep telling Cart that I find that Roman skies look unreal. Growing up in Singapore, we’ve never seen anything like this before. Our sunsets are more orange.

Cart explained to me that the colours of the sunset was because of the atmosphere and the altitude that we have here in Rome. While Singapore is closer to the equator.

But its not only the sunsets here which was beautiful. Even the clouds seemed unnatural to me.

Roman Skies

I dont think that I’ve ever seen this Cirrocumulus formation before. Its quite interesting.

Even when the weather is bad, sometimes you see sights like this.

Roman Skies

A really big rainbow. Not that there isn’t any rainbows in Singapore, but with our tall buildings, its not that often that we spot them.

Thus, that’s why I feel that Roman skies look fake, like a painting. After a year of living in Rome, I still marvel when I look at the sky.

Cooking pasta basics

Ask any Italian about pasta and you’d see how passionate they become. And there are so many different types of Pasta, its quite mind boggling. Like this Pasta Al Limone. Have you ever had lemon in your pasta before?

Pasta Al Limone

The first few times when I cooked pasta, though it tastes fine to me, Cart would then give it a try. The gentleman that he is, he never complains but gently shares with me tips on how to make it better. So I’m sharing some of the few crucial points with you 🙂

Here are a few basics when making pasta.

1. Dont overcook the pasta.

Italians immediately delete points on a pasta if it is not al dente. Al dente basically means that it is cooked just right with a bite to it and pasta which is cooked too long will be soft and loses this bite.

To cook the pasta, you take a pot of water and add some salt. Wait for it to boil before adding in the pasta. While there are many different types of pasta, most pasta packs would have a recommended cooking time.

Barilla Pasta Recommended Cooking Time
Like this Vermicelli cooks in 11 minutes

But if there isnt, you could take a piece and bite on it to see if it is cooked or not. And then serve it immediately with your pasta sauce. Never leave your cooked pasta by itself for too long. It’ll get soggy.

And do not throw your cooked pasta on the wall. It’ll be a hassle to clean up afterwards.

2. Pasta sauce basics

After observing how Cart cooks his pasta, while there are many variants in the sauce, there are basically two different bases. And these starts with the soffritto.

A) The first soffritto is in a pan with olive oil. You stir fry some chopped onion, carrot and celery.

Once it softens, add your bottled tomato sauce or fresh cut tomatoes and some salt for taste. Never use tomato ketchup because it has additives and it changes the taste. Tomato sauce should only contain tomatoes.

When its cooked, you scoop the sauce on to your pasta, add some parmiggiano cheese on top and mix well.

With this basic step, you could add some ground meat while frying the soffritto and you’ll end up with Pasta al Ragu. And you could even use this sauce to make lasagna!

B) The second soffritto is to fry some garlic with a little bit more olive oil. When the garlic is brown and the oil has been infused, you add the cooked pasta in and chopped parsley on top. Mix well and you get Aglio Oglio!

Or if you like, while frying the soffritto, you could add some chilli and add tomato sauce for Arrabbiata!

Penne Arrabbiata. Death by tray.

Seafood works very well too for this soffritto. You could add salmon, clams, mixed seafood, prawns … what ever you like

But just remember never add cheese for the second soffritto because the flavours clash together.

Buon Appetito 🙂

I think that’s all for now in the basics of cooking pasta. If you have any other tips to share, or have any questions please feel free to comment below 🙂

Review : Remington Sleek & Curl Flat Iron

I had my eye on the Remington Sleek and Curl flat iron for a long time since early December last year. I think it was the cover that did it for me. There were women with 6 various different hairstyles that I was hypnotised and stared at the box for like 10 minutes, examining every corners of the box till Cart dragged me away.

Anyway, I did a quick research online for review, and seeing how every user loved it, I finally decided to get it. Unfortunately, by the time that we went there next, it was no where to be seen!

So back in January, while I was in another mall, I noticed the last set of Sleek & Curl hair hot iron and I quickly pounced on it before anyone else could get it.

This is what was in the box.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

The flat iron, and a book manual, and a dvd that shows you the different ways on how to style your hair. It was actually very interesting watching the stylist do all those hairstyles on the model. Although I’m not sure if I had the deftness and dexterity to do them all.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

Just on thing to note about the flat iron is that it uses this European pin. I can’t plug it directly to the Italian power source. But all we had to do was to get the correct attachment plug for it and it works just fine. I bet that it’ll be fine for travelling too as long as there is the right attachment.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

It takes about 30 seconds to heat up.

Though the maximum temperature of the flat iron is 230 degrees C, I haven’t really experimented it at that heat. By right, I shouldn’t really worry since the flat iron is supposed to be made of ceramic, tourmaline and coated with teflon so its not supposed to be damaging for hair.

But I’ll stick with 180 degrees for the moment. It’s hot enough for me. After all, that’s almost twice the heat needed to boil water!

Anyway, this is my hair in all its natural glory one day after shampooing.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

It’s naturally wavy, shaggy and thick.

Truth be told, I’m not all that good with hair styling. But I’m keen to try different hairstyles. Especially now, its so easy to access tutorials from youtube and blogs.

There was one time that I was so excited to try making victory rolls, so on impulse, I bought for myself, a pair of curling iron. I don’t remember which brand it was though, but it was so challenging to use that I hardly touched it after one use and it pretty much broke down by itself.

What a waste of money.

Fortunately, this time round with my flat iron, my first time was fantastic and it was surprisingly so easy to use.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

I’m not sure why I’m doing a Mariah Carey hand gesture here but you take a small segment of your hair. Put it as close to the roots, squeeze and slowly pull it down.

One of the thing that initially put me off flat iron is because of the tangles I get from using them. I tried my little sis’s flat iron but it was so tangle-o-rama. And my hair felt so dry afterwards. It worked fine for her though. Maybe its because of our different hair textures.

But the teflon works here since its actually very smooth and I don’t get that draggy and tangly feeling.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

For the back of the head, it would be easier to pin with a hair clasp. And you repeat the steps till every bit of hair is straightened.

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

Tada! Straight hair!

And if you want to curl your hair, you take the small segment of hair again, put it close to the scalp, squeeze the flat iron and turn it in and drag it down slowly.

Be careful with your fingers though, its quite hot!

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

I’m not sure if you could see it in the picture, but there are guide lines which is supposed to guide you in controlling the type of your curls.

Yes, my curls look very messy. I’m still quite new at this, but for a newbie, my curls look pretty impressive, yes? 🙂

Rinaz remington sleek & curl

Anyway, tadah! Curly hair! I like! Abit of hair spray and it’ll stay sexeh for the entire day.

Hopefully my skills get better in time but I’m quite liking my toy for now. I’m glad I bought it 🙂

To HD or not to HD, that is the question

Ever since I had my first webcam, I found that I actually enjoyed making videos. Later on I got for myself a 2GB SD card for my camera that could also shoot videos. and that was the start of my videoblogging.

I love the mekap and the big hair I got for this picture 🙂

Videoblogging to me was pretty easy. First was to record myself. Which is not a problem for me since I look good and have a sexeh voice. And then I transferred the video into the computer and started up Microsoft Movie Maker. Click here. Click there. And then render it into the final video. The final step was to upload it on youtube and wait for it to be ready for viewing.

All in all, it didn’t take such a long time. Depending on the length of the project, it could take about 1 to 5 hours.

And it was a lot of fun for me!

In time, I upgraded to a better camera, higher capacity SD cards and then to Adobe premiere elements where I had fun exploring different video techniques.

So last last year, while browsing through youtube, I noticed that there was an increase in videos posted in High Definition. I was very excited to see the quality of these videos. They definitely looked bigger and clearer. I was floored. And jealous since these videos are posted by regular joes like you and me.

I want to do that too! I was really keen on editing in HD again.

Premiere Elements

I got to play with the Canon HF10 Camcorder some while back. It was a really fantastic toy, and coupled with Adobe Premiere elements, it was an awesome duo.

But while I was really impressed by the quality of the video and the audio of the camcorder, its not really for me. I’m more of an amateur videographer so I dont really need all of its functions hence I don’t really want to make the investment. I prefer the convenience of a point and shoot camera which is compact and is able to take pictures and decent video at the same time.

Sony Camera

I didn’t think that HD recording would be available for point and shoot cameras so soon. But some months after that, attending a couple of camera launches, point and shoots and even SLR’s are getting the HD recording feature. Oooh!

Hence, after a bit of research, I got for myself, the Canon Ixus 200 IS camera and Cyberlink Powerdirector 8 for editing the video.

By the way, if you are in Singapore, dont ever buy anything in the first two levels in Sim Lim Square.

Rinaz Canon Ixus 200 IS

Isn’t my camera a cutie? 😀

I wish that the camera was green, there was none, but its not a big deal. On the other hand, it was interesting to see the new fuctions such as the touchscreen for navigation. We also found out that we can flick it to navigate to the different pictures.

And there were a few new image features too like the creative light effect that lets me take shots like this :

Rinaz Canon Ixus 200 IS

Which is cute I guess but not really something that I’d be using on a regular basis.

Anyway!

Editing on the Powerdirector was fine enough. Initially it took a bit of a learning curve since I’m more used to the Premiere Elements interface. Simple things like fading to black, the sticky magnet connector (I don’t know if I’m making sense here) and even trying to make multiple text layers was a challenge.

So it took a while for me to figure out how to do the same things that I used to just click here, click here in Premiere Elements.

Cyberlink Powerdirector
So close to hitting it with a frying pan

Eventually, I got to find out about the workarounds to my problems and in the end, it wasn’t such a painful transition.

But what I didn’t expect was this.

Cyberlink Powerdirector

2 hours and a half to produce my video? Woah!

And the program took virtually all of my computer resources that I couldn’t even msn or surf the web without it lagging on me. And I’m working on a 4GB Ram computer mind you. So rather than sit aimlessly at the table, I could multitask and go off to cook or shower or take a nap.

And at length when the video finally rendered, I start to upload it to youtube only to be stunned by this.

Uploading HD to Youtube

Oh my Pisang Goreng. Another hour and a half! And after that, roughly another hour for the video to be digitalised and finally be ready for viewing.

Half a day for a 2 minute video? Half a day?!

You must be crazy.

As much as I love the quality of HD, I’m not too sure if its all worth the hassle.

Is it worth the hassle? Would you care if it is a high definition or standard definition video?

Sidenote : Did you check out youtube lately? They have this new function called the ‘Caption Action’ where the software tries to analyze the audio and add subtitles.

Rinaz youtube caption action

Suffice to say, it works for some but its mostly not accurate. What the heck is an itunes chicken? Amusing 😛

Woke up to a sore neck

Woke up on Saturday morning to a sore neck. Just turning my head hurts so much that I had to move very slowly. Even so, there were still sharp pains.

So annoying!

I’ve no idea what happened. Could it be my sleeping position or could it be this?

How cafe world made me cook for real

Cafe world was one of the games that I liked to play on Facebook.

Cafe World

It’s a cute but mindless game where you manage your own cafe by deciding on what to cook. Some of the food could take as fast as 3 minutes and some would be as long as 2 days.

Cafe World

But normally the longer it takes, the higher the profit and you could use the money to decorate and furnish your cafe. But the faster cooking ones lets you have more food servings so that the customers will not lower the cafe rating and ensure that the traffic keeps on going.

Cafe World

One of the first few times that I played Cafe world, I was quite amused mainly because of the time it takes to cook the item. Cheesecake takes 12 hours to cook? Halibut takes a day to cook? Really?

But regardless of of the unrealistic cooking times, I find myself drawn to the food. It might be a cartoon, but it sure looked yummy! And who could turn away from a face like that?

Cafe World

I was intrigued enough to try to make it on my own and since I had most of the ingredients, I decided to make my own Smoked Salmon Latkes.

And its quite amusing to see friends on twitter quickly assume that I’m playing Cafe World!

Smoked Salmon Latkes

Anyway, back to the recipe.

First you take two potatoes, peeled and sliced and then placed in the food processor and blend it roughly. Remove excess liquid and then put it in a bowl. Do the same thing to one onion. Drain the excess liquid and combine it with the potato.

Smoked Salmon Latkes

With that, you add two whipped egg, some salt and pepper and three tablespoon of flour and combine together.

And then you take a small scoop and flatten it thinly in a pan of hot oil and let it fry till it’s cooked. If you like, you can leave the cooked pieces in the oven to keep warm while waiting for the rest to be fried.

Smoked Salmon Latkes

Once the latkes are cooked, you could garnish it with anything you like like sourcream or even applesauce. Here I put some smoked salmon pieces. I wish that I had some creme fraiche and some caviar to add on top of the salmon but I don’t have them at hand.

Smoked Salmon Latkes

Not sure if its the real thing but I like it anyway 🙂

But I don’t think that I’d be making it too frequently though, I don’t think it’s very healthy!

Review : Biore Cleansing Oil

To me, make-up cleanser is a very important step at the end of the day. As much as I’d love to look immaculate 24/7, using make-up for an extended amount of time is really bad for the skin, regardless of what brand or how expensive it is.

Quite by chance, reading a review by beauty blogger,Tea Noir made me so intrigued that I wanted one of my own. I couldn’t find it in Rome so I had to wait till I was back in Singapore to get my paws on one.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the Biore Cleansing Oil :

Biore Cleansing Oil

Wait … what? Oil to clean your face?

If you could get over how greasy it is, oils from coconuts and olives actually make good cleansers. It’s not supposed to cause acne since acne is a result of dead skin, hormones and bacteria. Not convinced? Try smearing some cosmetics on your hand and dab a little bit of olive oil and see what happens.

Thank goodness we have formulated cleansing oils that doesn’t feel so greasy.

I’ve been using this cleansing oil since January and I’m liking it so far. Firstly its quite affordable at about $10 SGD and its quite easy to use.

So here I am with my regular make-up on :

Biore Cleansing Oil

And then you squeeze out the cleansing oil in the palm of your hand. I usually need just one pump, you can pump out more but I’m trying to be frugal since I cant find this in Rome.

Biore Cleansing Oil

The oil is transparent, smells nice and fruity.

And then massage it gently all over your face and you’ll see that in no time at all, every bit of make-up gets dissolved.

Biore Cleansing Oil

Be it blusher, waterproof eye-liner, lipstick.

But be extra gentle with the eye area as I’ve read from a number of other reviews that the oil sting their eyes. I didn’t encounter the same issue personally though so I think it could be a new formulation.

And then rinse off the oil with water and admire how nice and clean your face is … Oops! Now you can see my blemishes!

Biore Cleansing Oil

The interesting thing is that after using the cleansing oil, my face feels dry. Which is weird since oil isn’t supposed to make your face dry.

So at this point of time, I’d slap on some moisturiser or if its time for bed, I’d follow up with the rest of my facial care – Cleanser, Toner, Eye Cream and Moisturiser and then dream of pimple and wrinkle free skin.

Have you used the Biore Cleansing Oil before? What do you think of it?

Experiencing my first demonstration

In all honesty, at first I wasn’t that interested in attending the Anti Berlusconi demonstration. I just don’t find politics very interesting. But curiosity got the better of me and Cart and I headed to the Piazza Del Popolo last Saturday.

No Berlusconi Day

By the time we reached there, it was bustling with activity. All the way from the metro to the piazza, it was crowded with people. Cart guessed that there were about a good 30 thousand people when we reached there at 3. There were even more people streaming in as we left later.

No Berlusconi Day

Many of these people were wearing purple in a demonstration against Berlusconi’s corruption like the hiring of unqualified girls for his party.

No Berlusconi Day

I was hypothesizing that since purple in Italian is viola, the colour was chosen because it was close to the word violare, which means to violate.

There were an impressively large number of people carrying banners and marching around

No Berlusconi Day

No Berlusconi Day

But I was amused and most impressed at this very well made effigy. Everywhere the dummy went, the camera would follow.

No Berlusconi Day

And in this picture, he was probably trying to make the kid in the red coat cry by lowering the dummy close to the boy.

No Berlusconi Day

Eventually the speeches started and everyone was listening keenly to the speeches being done on stage. And all around me was cheering and clapping at what was being said.

No Berlusconi Day

Even though I couldn’t follow smoothly at what was being said, I thought that the event was very well planned and executed. Every speeches went back to back with no awkward pauses.

But what amazed me the most was the unity and the very public display of protest. And yet everything was very civil. What an eye opener.

I couldnt help but to compare it to Singapore’s own Hong Lim Park and all its regulations.
