This … this is not right!

During the weekend, along with our friend Fabrizio, Cart and I walked around Monteverde Vecchio. While it’s not really a touristy area, like Quartiere Coppede, this is an interesting place to look around because of their posh looking villas.

For example in the far distance, I was fascinated with this rather Gothic looking church.

rinaz.net

Not sure if you could see the Latin on the grey stone below, but it says Nil Mortalibus Ardui Est – which means Nothing is impossible for humankind.

rinaz.net

And we also stumbled on this unusual little street. You walk past multiple buildings and then suddenly, this little vicolo. It it something that I’ve never come across with, in a Roman residential area.

rinaz.net

And then … I spotted THIS!

rinaz.net

Cart and I have always talked about the viability of having a Hizza Put joint in Italy competing with the level of quality of pizza here. Heck, even McDougals is shutting down one by one in Rome. So seeing this advertisement, made me dumbfounded.

Ok, true. It’s not the real thing, but still … this is not right …

Happy women’s day!

8th of March is International Women’s Day, so happy Women’s day to everyone!

In Italy, there is a custom for women to give other women a stalk of yellow flowers called Mimosa as a form of feminism and sorority, but eventually lead to the men giving women the flowers too.

rinaz.net

So don’t be surprised if you were going around Italy today and be accosted by people selling mimosas to you. In fact last year, I was riding back home and got a red light and unfortunately had to stop and lo and behold! A seller walked up to me, pushing me to buy some of his mimosas. I have to admit that I was extremely amused.

Me : Ma dai! Devo comprare io il fiore? Tu! Deve dare a me! (Are you kidding me? *I* have to buy them? It’s you that have to gift it to me!)

Seller : Ah si … sei una donna … (Oh right … you’re a woman)

The funny bit is, mimosa trees grows abundantly around Rome. Around these time when it’s close to Spring, you’d be able to see one in each corner of each residential area and it looks so cheerful with it’s bright yellow, fuzzy looking flowers.

Guess what I’m going to be doing this morning? Yes. Armed with my gardening scissors, I’m going to be like a ninja and climb a mimosa tree and pick at the flowers. Why buy when it’s all around you for the taking?

rinaz.net

Hope no one catches me 😛

Sidenote : Entry to Museums are free in lieu of Women’s Day. Awesome!I think I’d like to visit one that I haven’t been to today 🙂

Nuovo Cinema Paradiso : If you haven’t watched this, you MUST

Recently watched this movie Nuovo Cinema Paradiso and I can’t believe that I haven’t heard of this movie earlier.

It is such a beautiful show. The storyline might seem simplistic, but it completely draws you in – with such beautiful sceneries and the music that tugs on your heartstrings as well as perfectly cast actors. The little boy who played Toto’ is probably the character that stole the whole show.

rinaz.net

He’s so cute! I think they manage to find the perfect cast for the entire movie.

The show starts when a man returns home at night and joins his girlfriend in bed. She sleepily tells him that his mother called and that someone called Alfredo died. And at that point, he starts recalling about his childhood days of his village in Sicily which he hasn’t visited in many many years.

We are then introduced to a six year old little boy called Salvatore. (Toto’ for short) He is a mischievous, but very intelligent boy who is the son of a war widow. And at that point of time, it was just a few years after the second world war. Toto’ is the young helper of the town priest, who also takes a role in censoring scenes with kissing, hugging and nudity in the local cinema. He orders Alfredo, the projectionist to have it cut away.

rinaz.net

One day, Toto follows the priest to the cinema without his knowledge and from there, he instantly becomes enamoured with films and spends all his time at the cinema. He befriends Alfredo, who at first thinks of him as a pest, but eventually cultivates his love and teaches him how to operate the machinery.

Alfredo is another interesting character who, you could tell, is someone who is completely devoted to his craft – the way he handles the films, the way cares for the machineries … he even tends to quote from the popular films at the time in normal conversations. By the way, I’m not sure if you could tell that the person acting is actually French.

Anyway, I don’t want to reveal too much after this point as I’m very sure that this is a movie that you’d enjoy. So you just have to watch this!

But I do have to say that there were little nuances that I enjoyed watching. Like how a couple met each other in cinema, and then some scenes later, they went together as a married couple, and then some scenes later they went in as a family with kids!

rinaz.net

And also of the scene where Toto’ grows up to a teenager and falling in love. There was a memorable scene where Alfredo tells him a fable of a soldier and a princess.

Quite thoughtful about relationships. When you watch this movie, you’ll find out Toto’s interpretation of why the soldier left at the very end.

Anyway, that’s about all that I will reveal to you. This is a must watch Italian movie! It has multiple awards! And it’s wonderful! By the way, while the movie isn’t based on a true story, it is a reflection of the director, Giuseppe Tornatore’s idealised childhood. And the best that I can compare the movie with is probably is has the feel of ‘The Big Fish‘ – dreamy and enchanting.

rinaz.net

I don’t know why I love this movie so much. I guess it has a strong feeling of nostalgia for me. Even if I don’t live in Sicily, nor in the 60s, but I can connect because I remember how happy I was when I was a kid and I miss those easy and care-less days.

And you can see the stark contrast how the scenes looked like between the beginning and the end after the years has passed – the same for us adults.

Anyway, it was a little difficult for me to understand as there weren’t any subtitles to help me (Obviously! Being in Italy!) Nevertheless, if you are someone who’s trying to learn Italian, or someone just likes watching feel good movies, I think that Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is an excellent show to add to your list.

WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT!

Sidenote : Did you know that an audio clip of the movie was taken for for a Dreamtheater song? It is somewhere in 3:00

Woohoo! I just ran my first half marathon!

Hi everyone!

After training since late December, I did my first long distance competitive run yesterday and I’m damn proud of myself. I’m amazed that I did it! I actually jogged non stop for 21 km at the Roma Ostia Mezza Maratona!

rinaz.net

So the entire week prior to the race was so easygoing that I didn’t feel like I was training at all. It was basically a two 5 km run and then a 3km walk and that’s about it. Reason being that it was to let the body rest and be ready before the big event.

So I spent it doing a leisurely walk around the centro, going to the English Bookshop, then treating myself to some Indian Food and then getting a haircut. Feels like my birthday! I even made invite cards in the hopes that there will be someone cheering on for me at the end point. Which is probably overly enthusiastic, but it’s my half marathon and I’m quite excited about it.

rinaz.net

On Saturday, the day before the race, my friends Alessandra and Rosella accompanied me in picking up my race pack at Casa Romaostia in Eur.

rinaz.net

The air felt festive with so many people coming from all over the world. Getting my race pack was pretty much the same as the year before when I did the 5 km fun run and I spotted out an area for doing a sports doctor medical check.

I spotted this wall of all the names of the competitors in the race.

rinaz.net

Sadly, I couldn’t spot out my name no matter how much I searched.

As always, there were a plentiful of displays selling and promoting gears and events. I had to glance twice on this particular one to see if my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.

rinaz.net

We had to snake through the crowd, and in the end, we went to a bar and spent the evening later chatting and gossiping over some aperitivo.

When I reached home, I quickly examined the pack. Among the things I got, was this eyecatching bright yellow Adidas tshirt and bib with my name printed on it, which makes it a lot more special compared to my previous runs.

Runners are categorised with different coloured bibs – the fastest are black, followed by red, then blue, then green, then pink and finally yellow. Well, it’s my first run, and I’m an amateur so there’s no shame being categorised as “the slow ones”.

rinaz.net

If you looked carefully on the left hand side of the bib, there’s a chip which is supposed to record and compute the speed of your run as soon as you go past the starting line. There were a number of devices located at every 5 km or so which records the chip.

I’ve never seen one before, so I was quite fascinated.

rinaz.net

I also had a membership card to a sports association and a runner’s club. Theoretically, I could utilize this if I wanted to join another competition till the middle of the year.

rinaz.net

I was also given this huge-ass bag to keep my stuff in. Look at how big it is compared to the book rack beside it.

rinaz.net

I had no idea what to put in it. When I was done packing in the end, even with my winter jackets and whatnots, the bag was still more than half empty. Obviously, we didn’t need to carry this during the run as there will be a truck where we can deposit it to which will bring it at the end point.

rinaz.net

On the day itself, I woke up bright and early and feeling quite excited, like it was the first day of going to school.

rinaz.net

As public transportation was a mess due to the half marathon – with closed roads, plus I don’t live walking distance to the subway that passes there, I asked Cart to drive me. I’m really thankful that he agreed to my request at the last minute and managed to get me there before 8 am. Cart isn’t a morning person, so it’s a big gesture for me.

And all around my neighbourhood, I could see signs for the oncoming half marathon and I feel so proud to be doing this. Running on the roads that I know, and recognize and regularly pass through.

I’ll always be a Jurong girl, but Rome is fast becoming my beloved adopted city.

rinaz.net

It was so cold and frosty morning. I think it was even less than 10 degrees when I reached Palalottomatica. It was so cold that I was in a dilemma on whether to put my jacket in my big bag and hand it over to the camion immediately or stay warm and hand the jacket over only till the last minute.

rinaz.net

In the end, I thought that I’d just wing it, put away my jacket, put on the disposable plastic poncho that was included in the pack and hand it over. I was cursing under my breath at how cold it was, but the poncho helped tremendously from the cold wind.

I took the chance to warm the body up by running around and doing stretches.

rinaz.net

Nevertheless the air totally felt so festive, there were so many people in different coloured outfits, different shapes and sizes, different nationalities and different ages all ready to go. I even met a 77 year old man who ran faster than me! I’m so in awe.

Before starting a long race, it’s always a good idea to empty our bladder. And here is a shot of the long queue to the toilet and I had to wait a bit for my turn.

rinaz.net

One needs a strong heart to enter one of these latrines. (I do not need to explain why) And in due time, we queued up accordingly in our corrals and waited for our turn to start.

rinaz.net

In the picture above, the people carrying the balloons are pacemakers. Lets say if you wanted to finish the run in 2 hours like what was written on the balloon, you should try to keep up and follow these people.

Soon the sun started to shine and with the addition with being in a crowd of people, I started to feel warm up. I took the chance to take off my poncho and tried to throw it across the gate. Unfortunately for me, the person behind me played a prank on me and blocked it, and it hit on someone’s head instead. Oh dear!

And soon after, we were off! It was so festive! I felt a surge of happiness and a sense of pride running around my neighbourhood.

There were a lot of people who try to run fast and take over me in the beginning. I wasn’t too concerned though, as it is a long distance run, so I focused on keeping to my own comfortable pace to conserve my energy. Not too fast, nor too slow and most importantly to keep on moving.

rinaz.net

After we went past Eur and entered through the Cristoforo Colombo highway, it was an interesting experience for me, as I usually drive here so it was a different perspective to be here on foot. On a regular day, I wouldn’t advice anyone to walk here because it’s really dangerous and there’s no regular walking paths here.

I saw interesting things during my run. If you wanted to, you could pick up free jackets and gloves and hats on the floor – stuff that the earlier runners didn’t want anymore. There were a significant number of men who stopped to pee and while I was running behind a couple, one of them farted in front of me. So nasty!

I also saw a woman running with her dog behind her, like a tiny bodyguard.

rinaz.net

There was also one guy whom I passed at the 10km mark who was wearing a non-competitive bib, looking very confused. What was he doing there? Poor guy! He was probably supposed to be doing a 5 km fun  run and instead he did double!

We had refreshments at around each 5 km intervals. It felt so professional to be grabbing a cup of water, sip and throw it away nonchalantly, like how they do on TV.

It was a good run. while there were slopes going up and down, it was relatively gentle and I would have liked to have my route recorded but unfortunately for me, Endomondo couldn’t detect any GPS signal and didn’t record more than half my run.

rinaz.net

As I hit 19km, I was quite psyched. As tired as I was, as disgustingly sweaty I felt, and FUNGRY as I felt, and all the pins and needles on the palms of my feet and my thighs, I was feeling quite motivated as I was excited to complete the longest distance that I’ve done yet.

By this time, some people were starting to slow down, looking half dead and some were even limping. I trudged on forward, knowing that the end is almost near. I could smell the sea! Which meant that Ostia Beach was really close. And not too long after, I heard a voice screaming, “Marina! Marina!” and it was my good friend Bahija who came to support me in the end.

And here is a picture she snapped of me! Oh my, I look so unglamorous. In my heart though, I was very happy that I had a friend to cheer me on 🙂

rinaz.net

At length, I reached the finishing line! My thighs were screaming, and I had pins and needles on the palm of my feet but I felt really good to have completed the race. Immediately after that, I gobbled all the food and drinks that I could see at the refreshment stand. I was so famished!

Despite the GPS malfunction, I’m pleasantly surprised to have got the results pretty much emailed immediately after I finished the race.

rinaz.net

In the end, I’m faster than I thought I was. I’m not super fast, but I’m just happy that I could do it in under 2 hours and 45 minutes – hypothetically considering if I gave myself a maximum constant pace of 8 minutes for each kilometer.

Plus! Considering that with over 12 000 sign ups for this race, I think I’m in a pretty decent position in 9k! By the way, how come I’m categorized under Italian nationality?

And so I got a medal for completing 21 km in under 3 hours!

rinaz.net

I was so enthralled at completing my first 21 km run, I did a victory dance!

rinaz.net

Wow, look at how red my face was.

rinaz.net

Anyway, after all that fuss of rallying people to come, only two people came over to cheer me on in the end – my good friend Bahija and Cart. But it’s better than zero! I was really glad that they would take the time to support and accompany me.

rinaz.net

And here I am on the phone chatting with some friends and family in Singapore, bragging about how I completed my run.

rinaz.net

Aoh! Che sta’fa?

Another picture of me, for good measure, just because I look nice here.

rinaz.net

We chatted excitedly all through our walk to the train station. By this time, I saw quite a number of people lying on the grass, probably exhausted or just resting. We also saw this interesting sight and I made Bahija pose and I pretended to take a picture of her but instead sneakily took a picture of this guy showing off his speedo. Sexeh!

rinaz.net

While we were in the train, it is here when I felt the most aches after a long run. Oh boy, sitting down was not a good idea. I could feel my legs pulsating. My back was hurting and I started to walk like an old woman after that.

rinaz.net

Interestingly I felt myself covered with salt crystals, which was a really odd feeling, as if I rubbed myself with sand. And as soon as we reached home, Cart made lasagna with pesto for me while I showered and surprised me with a maritozzo later on. Both stuff that I love to eat! I love him so much!

After that, I didn’t want to move too much and tried to keep my legs comfortable. I managed to catch the race on Rai-Sport TV featuring the top runners and I was so amazed to see the winner, completing the run in 59 minutes. How is it humanly possible?! I was so dumbfounded that I kept gasping and couldn’t close my mouth.

As evening came, I felt a little feverish. But I’m feeling better now after taking paracetamol and some rest. I think I overworked my body and got too much sun.

I’m not sure if you could see it well in this picture, but I have a bit of a tan line even though we are still in Winter.

rinaz.net

In any case, I feel very contented with myself for being able to overcome this personal challenge. I never imagined that I could do a 21 km run, but amazingly, I did it! At this point of time, I’m not sure if I’d do the full marathon though. But I’m feeling so motivated right now, I might be crazy enough to do it!

I’m totally gonna wear my medal the whole day today and show off. I really don’t care if anyone gives me the side eye 🙂

This is Marina, over and out!

Here is where you could get cheap English books in Rome

While Cart and I do use the Kindle and other forms of digital books, when it comes to children reading, I think physical books still have an advantage and your heart wouldn’t feel so in pain if you see frays, tears and whatnots as compared to a broken e-book reader.

rinaz.net

I myself cracked my netbook a couple of days ago and am horrified. How on earth did I do that?

Anyway, when I first started my job in Rome teaching kids, obviously I was very excited and decided to get a number of books from an International bookshop. But English books can be rather expensive in Rome. I got this book for example, for 7.50 euros.

rinaz.net

And this one below for 14.40 euros :

rinaz.net

Both of them excellent books, don’t get me wrong. They are both wonderful in teaching colours, numbers and daily objects. But they are quite pricey aren’t they? And just yesterday, I spotted a regular English textbook for more than 20 euros.

rinaz.net

Oh my. One or two books would be fine, but if you want to have your own little collection, it all adds up. Perhaps it is cheaper in Germany.

Getting books from Amazon could be more economical. But the trouble is, for kid’s books you don’t really have a good preview of how the book would be like – even with all the reviews.

These books for example, are a tad too small compared to what I had in mind and was a little bit challenging when showing it in a larger group.

rinaz.net

But anyway, for those of you who are in Rome, you might want to check out Santa Susanna English Library. This is probably the only English library in Rome and it is located in Via Venti Settembre 15. Getting here is really easy – hop off the Repubblica metro stop, take a relaxing walk around the picturesque area and before you know it, you are there.

rinaz.net

Climb up to the second floor, and there, personally for me, it doesn’t feel like I was in Rome any more because everyone I encountered there speaks in a British accented English. They were kind though, and will help you if you had any questions.

Here, you could find an ample amount of books that may interest you. For about 28 euros, you could borrow up to 8 books at a time for 3 months if you become a member.

I was there more for their book sale though, which I think is held about twice a year. I’ve been to the one held in October and the one just yesterday. Check out my loots :

I got all of these for 10 euros! 1 euro each. I think I was quite lucky to have found something from Roald Dahl as well as Richard Scarry. These are classics.

rinaz.net

And for yesterday’s sale, I got all of these for 5 euros! 50 cents each. I can’t believe I found Charlotte’s Web. I loved reading it so much as a kid myself.

rinaz.net

Awesome finds, aren’t they? Of course, when it comes to pre-loved items. It takes a lot of luck in finding them, if they are there at all. Nevertheless, do go on and try your luck as the sale continues today as well as on Sunday.

P.s. Congratulations to the newly engaged Jerrick and Michelle! I still am in disbelief 🙂

I want to go to Germany

My friend Alessandro shared this video recently.

Click here if you are not able to view

For the benefit of those who don’t understand Italian, basically the guy in the video is comparing the prices of common, every day things in Germany. It is shockingly low compared to the prices that we pay in Italy. Multivitamins for example, costs 50 cents euro in Germany, but in Italy, it costs about 5 euro!

Seriously! Check this picture I snapped in a local supermarket just yesterday.

rinaz.net

This is so depressing! I’m not even Italian and I feel outraged.

How is it that in Germany, workers in general have an almost double amount of salary compared to a regular Italian. We’ve always been told that the cost of living in Europe is higher in general (I cannot comment on how much Germans have to pay for taxes et al), but in the case of buying daily necessities, in reality this video shows otherwise.

Having a higher pay and a lower cost of living means that they have stronger spending power and could save more and enjoy their money better.

To put it in the most simple terms, Germany is able to do this because they have a stronger budget deficit. They don’t have much need to borrow money to run their country. Thus national debt are accounted for, which means that bank interests get lower. And this leads to the money paid for taxes to be channelled more for the benefit of the public – like subsidizing daily necessities.

rinaz.net

Without going too deep into politics, (as I can’t vote in Italy and I don’t usually talk about Singaporean politics anyway) I think that it is more than a right, it is a responsibility in choosing the right governance. Regardless of which nationality you are, it is your life and livelihood that is affected and we are all in the same boat. Please don’t let us sink even more …

(Which is why I don’t understand why there are people who goes to a voting booth and gives invalid votes … on purpose)

Anyway, coming back to the video. After watching it, makes me really want to plan a trip there. It is probably cheaper to buy a plane ticket, go to Germany and get stuff in bulk than to buy the same thing in Italy. Heck, Cart and I haven’t had a proper honeymoon either.Eating out wouldn’t be expensive either. Spending 15 euro for two for dinner is something I’ve never heard of in Rome. If we had spending power like that, we wouldn’t even have to think twice about having children.

So lets go to Germany! When I’ve saved up enough money for a trip, I’m so there! Achtung! Achtung! Attenzione Germania che arriviamo! So which part of Germany should we visit? Any recommendations? 🙂

Posterous closing down on April 30

As many of you have heard, Posterous would be closing their doors on the 30th of April. Which, to me is quite saddening.

rinaz.net

When I first migrated to Rome, I wanted to do microblogging. At the time, my main computer was still under custody of the Italian Post, but I still wanted to share some of the random, interesting daily snaps of my life using my camera phone at the very least.

Like, why is this poor bra left hanging on a tree by itself?

rinaz.net

Comparing how fuel costs (Wow, it was much cheaper then in 2009!)

rinaz.net

And this interesting custom for kids to dress up in costumes before Lent.

rinaz.net

Anyway, I was using a Samsung Innov8 at the time, and then moved to Nokia E72 and at this point, I’m using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Posterous was pretty easy to use, and all you had to do was to write an email, attach one or as many pictures as you liked and send it to post@posterous.com.

rinaz.net

I loved how beautiful and clean the interface looked like. It was like, every function was thought of from a user’s viewpoint. It wasn’t confusing and it just … worked! The image gallery for example, was simply beautiful.

rinaz.net

There wasn’t a need to embed videos and audio from external websites (although you could do that) as Posterous deals with it by itself.

rinaz.net

And I liked that for every new post that you do, it will autoposts links to your social media sites, like twitter, plurk and facebook. Which was very convenient, you didn’t have to take the additional steps, linking here and there. And I think for being in 2009, this feature was pretty innovative.

rinaz.net

To top it all, the people at Posterous were really friendly too – I even got a reply from THE founder, Sachin Agarwal himself, which to me, is quite big (Maybe I should write to my favourite actors and writers too and see if they write back, haha!)

rinaz.net

Of course, since then, new services emerged, like the wildly popular Instagram. While I enjoy playing with the filters and peek into my friends’s pictorial updates, Instagram doesn’t allow me to stick a code in it for checking stats (don’t judge me) and when it wouldn’t embed my pictures into twitter which quite turned me off, even before the picture selling scandal.

So it was natural to go back to Posterous. And then the news of them closing down. How sad. Almost poetic even.

rinaz.net

Anyway, I’ve already done a backup and am still considering and weighing the pros and cons on to which site I could use to replace it.

rinaz.net

Oh wow, 600 megs of memories. I cannot emphasize enough that it is such a shame that Posterous had to close down. I know for some, it is quite silly to be sad and to be emotional over the loss of a website. But when you invest time, and moments and memories into something, you’re bound to feel nostalgic about it. It is like discovering your old diary at 12 years old and remembering the silly and fun things that you did at the time and how things have changed since then.

To me, Posterous was a wonderful platform and a worthy rival to Tumblr – clean, classy and has a sort of simple sophistication. In any case, I would like to wish all the best, and many many thank yous to Sachin and all the staff at Posterous for giving me the joy of expressing myself.

To end, I’m putting up a screenshot of my very first entry in posterous 4 years ago :

Bye bye! You will be remembered!

Changeling : Depressing but a must watch

Warning : This post contains spoilers

Normally after watching a random movie, I wouldn’t even think twice about it at the end. But after watching Changeling, scenes from the movie kept me thinking for hours. I was quite disturbed. What makes it even more chilling is that it was based on a true event.

rinaz.net

Changeling (not to be confused with The Changeling) is a movie set in the 1920s, revolving around a single mother called Christine (Angelina Jolie). It was interesting seeing the clothes, the cars, the buildings – reflecting the era. And of how women are just starting to be empowered and starting to join the workforce right after the first world war.

rinaz.net

Nevertheless, I imagine how challenging it is to live as a single mother after the husband left her, right as her son, Walter was being born. Being a single parent was probably unheard of and looked down on during that time (although I didn’t see any overt biasness depicted in the movie)

rinaz.net

One day, she comes back from work and finds her son missing. She asks the police for help. But it was only after the help of a reverend with a popular radio show, that the police started to be active in the belief that it will negate any negative publicity.

rinaz.net

After an uneventful wait and public pressure, 5 months later they brought a boy and claimed it was her son. But upon first looking at him, she realised he’s not hers but she was pressured into taking him home anyway so that the press could continue with their “happy ending story”

rinaz.net

From this point onwards was where the story picks up and gets disturbing. I’m not a mother, but I’m pretty sure that any mother could recognize their own child. So to have the police chief constantly dismissing her that she’s only stressed, that was why her child looks different. That was just wrong.

rinaz.net

And then a doctor (who was probably in cahoots with the chief) was called in to do a house call to give his “expert opinion”. And when told that her son is supposed to be taller than the impostor, the doctor simply told her that the trauma from being away from home shrunk his spine. THIS DOESN’T MAKE SENSE! I know that in the 1920s, technology wasn’t that advanced, but come on, people aren’t that gullible are they?

Nevertheless, Christine has the backing of the dentist and the school teacher who after examining and observing the imposter, testified that the boy was indeed not the real Walter.

rinaz.net

I don’t understand how could the police be so lax. While I’m not a parent, wouldn’t anyone working there have a connection to the child kidnapping case? (Walter Collins was one of about 20 the way) and I’m pretty sure that there are fathers in there. What would they have done if it were their own child? And why are they so quick to hide it under the carpet?

rinaz.net

What’s worse is, that the chief and the captain tries to point the finger on the mother instead and tries to paint her as an irresponsible mother, never taking responsibility. But what tops it all was that, just as she was about to tell her story to the press, was to deem her as psychotic and without a warrant, had her warded in a psychiatric ward. A sane woman. She was told that she’d only be allowed freedom if she signs a document that the police was right and that the impostor was her son all along.

rinaz.net

This was hard to watch as a psychiatric ward in the 20s were different to the ones we have now. At the time, they use water-jet therapy and electro-shock therapy which I think is extremely inhumane.

We find out later that there were other mothers like her who were warded against their will. And eventually after a separate investigation, we find out that her son was a possible victim of a deranged murderer who goes around picking stray kids. He imprisons them in a chicken coop, molests and then murders them (usually with an axe) and I gasped and kept thinking to myself, “How could anyone do this?”

rinaz.net

Which is quite against the flow of how people are always reminiscing about the good old days. Seems things are more violent then.

rinaz.net

Anyway, there was a happier ending to the movie as there was a huge public support, with people protesting and volunteering their services. And eventually after the big trial, the captain and the chief were removed from duty, the murderer condemned to death and one of the boys thought to be dead is found alive, giving Christine hope that her son is still alive.

In conclusion, I have no idea why this movie is categoried under “Feel good” because it was extremely depressing for me to watch. I don’t usually read reviews before watching a movie, so it took me by surprise at how sad it was considering that it was based on a true story not scripted. The movie was based on true events and excerpts from interviews and the trial.

Nevertheless, I recommend this movie as it is a must watch. If you haven’t watched it, please do. The acting is extremely believable and strong. The costumes and set are flawless. The music scores pulls you. The storyline starts out slow, but you never feel bored watching it and the scenes draw you in completely. I got to hand it to Clint Eastwood as an excellent director and for making this masterpiece.
