Mememe Cherub’s Blush cheek and lip tint review

Update Jan 2013 : Just found out that the Pussy Cat Lip and Cheek Tint has been renamed as Cherub’s Blush Lip and Cheek Tint. It should still be the same thing.

I’m really into the natural look. The no-makeup makeup look. Which could be a misnomer, since one still needs make-up to look like they are not using make-up.

Which is why ever since I’ve known about it, I’ve always wanted the Benetint Cheek and lipstain as it is supposed to give you the natural healthy fresh look. I’ve watched plentiful of youtube and blog reviews about it. And swatching it on my hand while on my trip to Sephora, it looks so beautiful.

By the way, did you know that Gu Hye-sun, the Korean actress in Boys over flowers was known to have used it while shooting the series.

The only thing that bugged me was that it was really expensive. At 32.50 euro, the price really scared me off. That’s like one week worth of groceries for me. A girl needs to eat, after all.

Luckily for me, I found out that there was a very close dupe in the form of Mememe Cherub’s Blush Cheek and Lip Tint. It’s a UK brand, which as far as I know, isn’t sold in Italy.

rinaz.net

Which is why I bothered Claire to buy one for me while she was on her honeymoon to UK.

I’ve been using it for about a month now. It started off being completely full. It’s kind of scary that I’ve used up quite a significant amount already. But that shows how much I love this thing.

rinaz.net

Each bottle costs about 5 pounds each and comes in a volume of 12 ml. The container seems to be made of glass, so I reckon you’d have to be careful when you bring it out on a trip.

Inside, it contains a deep cherry red liquid and it comes with an odd looking applicator which looks like a nail polish brush.

rinaz.net

But I reckon that it works just fine you could control the amount that you want to put on.

The colour, by the way, is just gorgeous! Reminds me of roses and cherries which looks beautiful and natural even on darker skin. I love it. Look at what just two dots did on my hand.

rinaz.net

In using it for about a month, I haven’t had any adverse reactions to it, but it’s useful to check the ingredients.

Putting it on is super easy. For me, I like to draw crosses across my cheeks and dab it in the apples of the cheeks. Or you could just put multiple dots or multiple strokes. But regardless, you’d have to be quick and do it before it dries up though, and it does dries up pretty quickly! Or you’d end up with an odd looking stain.

rinaz.net

The formula smells like roses by the way. Which reminds me so much of the drink, Rose Syrup.

By the way, when it calls itself a cheek stain, it really does mean stain!

rinaz.net

My finger tends to stay this colour even after washing it with soap and water and remains that way for a couple of hours. But it’s not such a big deal.

Anyway here I am, looking quite naked with just foundation on.

rinaz.net

And here I am with the cheek and lip-tint. It’s very subtle but in less than 30 seconds, it made my face look more fresh. Wonderful!

rinaz.net

You could use it on the lips too. I really love the colour, but I need to put some lip balm beforehand as the formula feels very drying on the lips. While it smells like roses, it has a strange, but not unbearable taste. Which is why I normally avoid it on my lips.

And here are a couple more pictures of me, just because I’m having a good hair day today.

rinaz.net

I’m using just 5 products on my face by the way :

rinaz.net

Super simple! Super easy! I love it and will probably keep this routine for a bit. 5 minutes and I’m pretty much done! 🙂

Sidenote : At this point of time, Mememe has come out with Boho Balm, which is another version of cheek and lipstain. So purrdy!

Claire gets married! Part 2

This post is gonna be full of pictures, so if you’re on a slower connection, do make a nice cup of tea while the pictures are loading!

rinaz.net

Anyway, my friends Claire and Alex decided to have the wedding in a place called Saturnia, which is in Tuscany, Italy.

Saturnia, is famous for it’s hot springs.

rinaz.net

I was most excited to check the hot springs out. (And attending my friend’s wedding of course ) From Rome, it took us about two hours of driving to get there. And I admired the scenery as it goes from urban concrete, to the sea, to rural greenery.

At length, we reached Saturnia! It was a small little commune and we searched for our bed and breakfast so we could plonk our stuff in. Cart is really wierd. On top of our luggage, he brought two sets of outfits just for the wedding. He couldn’t decide on one! While I’ve already decided to wear my green baju kurong. And he brought his laptop along … to play facebook games *facepalm*

Anyway, the bed and breakfast was such a cozy looking place.

rinaz.net

It was a tiny room, but looking at it, it felt so much like I was my relative’s or even my parent’s house (somewhat) with all the flower pattern and the ribbons.

rinaz.net

This looks like a typical Malay bedroom or what?

rinaz.net

Oh and another cool thing was that, when you open the cabinet, there’s a compact kitchen in there! Dang! I should have packed some stuff to cook! Or brought some coffee at least.

rinaz.net

The bathroom was teeny, but it was substantial enough for a short stay.

rinaz.net

And then we headed out for dinner. I got to meet some of Claire and Alex’s close friends, Franz, Max, Jess… and family, Christine and Rachael. The original plan was for us to go to a pizzeria, but it seemed that there weren’t any that could handle the ten of us! So we had to go to a trattoria instead.

rinaz.net

And this was what we ate. I’m not going to even attempt to remember what they were :

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

Oh! I do remember what this was though …

rinaz.net

It was my ravioli with baccala inside and it was really good!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

Oh, by the way, in Tuscany there is a type of steak called the Bistecca alla fiorentina which are made specially from the cows in the area, and the size was at least 10cm deep.

Franz was saying that eating it was like eating the steak that Fred had from the Flintstones. It’s so huge!

rinaz.net

Oh gosh. How is it even possible to finish this?!

And this was the last thing that we had at the trattoria. I couldn’t help but to take a picture. What an adorable coffee cup!

rinaz.net

This was what I woke up to, the next day. Isn’t it glorious? Tuscany is famous for it’s greenery.

rinaz.net

I decided to take a quick walk around the area for a quick exploring. And I met Claire, Christine and Rachael who were already there, basking in the sunshine. I was amused at Christine’s comments at how well I speak English, she said, “If I closed my eyes, I think that I was speaking to a Brit“.

Really?! Wow! Hahaha!

rinaz.net

It happened that around the area was a sort of cat station where all the cats in the commune seem to hang out.

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

And not long after, it was time to get all dressed up and ready for the wedding. About a week before, I was suggesting to Claire that I could do her makeup, if she wanted to. And she replied that I’d have to fight with Jess for the job. I conceded in the end. Didn’t want to start a catfight … LOL!

Here’s Jess doing Claire’s mekap and I was eyeballing the amount of mekap she had.

rinaz.net

Here are just a fraction of her mekap. My heart skipped a beat at the stuff she had … sooo many pretties! She sheepishly told me that there were more at home, but come on, girls love their pretties!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

I got back to my room to get changed and by the time I went back, she’s done! Check out her cool looking cinnamon roll hair!

rinaz.net

As the wedding is held in the Manciano commune, we are off to with Jess, her husband and Claire in one car… (Alex was already gone with Franz and Max)

rinaz.net

And Cart, Claire’s mom and sister and me in our car.

rinaz.net

Look at how Cart’s driving with full of concentration … We didn’t want to get lost on this important day!

rinaz.net

And at length, we were there. Manciano is beautiful. I just love seeing the horizon as a backdrop to the charming commune.

rinaz.net

The people living here sure are lucky to be waking up to such a postcard picture view every day.

rinaz.net

We entered the mayor’s office where the rest of the guests were already waiting. And with bated breath, Alex waits for his bride.

rinaz.net

And here she comes!

rinaz.net

The stand in for the mayor gave a few words, with Max as the official translator and proceeded to start the ceremony.

rinaz.net

And then it was time for the ring exchange!

rinaz.net

And the signing away of their freedom of the documents!

rinaz.net

Look at Alex’s coy and big smile! Hahahaha!

rinaz.net

And here is Cart giving an Obama not bad face.

rinaz.net

And now they are finally married! Yay!

rinaz.net

Look at how beautiful Claire looks … she’s practically glowing 🙂

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

Cart and I were walking behind the couple and before I knew it, people started throwing rice at them. I missed a photo opportunity! Ah well!

rinaz.net

I’m a little amused with this picture of Cart trying to hide behind the flowers.

rinaz.net

Random sidenote because I just noticed her shoes. Claire’s been dragging me around for weeks and weeks to find her perfect wedding shoes. She’s really fussy about them! I’m glad the wedding’s done :p

Finally married!

They have a very cool inscription by the way, of an old English poem divided into two for each ring. I can’t remember the exact wording, but it was something like : There are thousands of stars in the sky, but I only see you.

How romantic!

rinaz.net

Here are a couple of group pictures :

Claire with her sister and mother.

rinaz.net

Claire with Christina and Mark and their daughter Sophie, a beautiful family.

rinaz.net

Here’s one with Franz and Max

rinaz.net

And here’s Jess! (Where’s Daniele?)

rinaz.net

And here’s one with Cart and me! Finally, a picture of me! Hahaha!

rinaz.net

Here’s Alex examining his wedding document. He probably couldn’t believe that he’s a married man now! Haha!

rinaz.net

The next time I knew, was Max and Christine wondering what material the document was made. Paper or Animal skin? And that was when Max decided to examine it thoroughly.

rinaz.net

And in the end, we still have no idea.

We then headed back to the village of Saturnia for the wedding lunch. And as a random sidenote, this lady below, (Cristina’s great great grandmother) is 98 years old! And she’s still very active! (She even offered Cart to sit down where she was!) We were all marvelling at the fact and wondered if it was the country life and food that made her so healthy.

rinaz.net

We were in Da Mario, a nice looking restaurant, a walking distance from our bed and breakfast. And I thought to myself, I’m hungry! I am ready and cannot wait to start eating!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

But even before half the appetizers, I realized that the wedding lunch was probably the most daunting thing that I had to go through. Mostly because I wanted to try everything, and everything was so good …

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

And the waiter kept pilling more and more “refreshers” for us! By this time, I had to leave more than half of the food on my plate … I felt so bad …

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

Erm … Would it be rude if I asked for a doggie bag?!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

I was practically ballooning up and bursting in my baju kurong. So. Much. Food. And I felt really bad that I couldn’t finish the food, that I almost cried when the waiter took away my parmigiana. I hated the idea of food being thrown away … I should have brought a tupperware :p

rinaz.net

Nevertheless, it was nice seeing everyone chill, laid back and having a nice time.

rinaz.net

And this is my bomboniere! These are wedding favors given to each guests after a wedding. It can be decorated in many forms but it contains a type of sweet and it’s always in 5.

rinaz.net

I’ve always wondered what the significance. No one I asked seemed to know. Even Cart couldn’t tell me.

After the humongous lunch, we were all so full that the only thing we could do now is to collapse in bed. Eating is so tiring! And by the time we woke up, the sun was already starting to set …

We are like vampires!

rinaz.net

It happened to be a food and music festival at the piazza and we all headed there to a look see. It was really cool seeing everyone dancing.

rinaz.net

I was really amazed to see Franz dance so well. He was very very good! I asked him, where did he learn to do that. And he told me that when he was a young boy, vacationing in the mountains, the only few things to do, to pass the time was to dance. LOL!

rinaz.net

The next day, I woke up wondering to myself at how easy it was to sleep here. Normally I won’t be able to sleep well in a strange bed. But the past two nights has been really restful.

A quick breakfast, and a chat with Claire and Alex (we should give them a nickname by now. Clairex? Or Aleire?) Here’s Claire reading the little card, Cart and I wrote for her 🙂

rinaz.net

And here is Rachael showing off her thank you card which she wants to give to the lady that they’ve been staying with … With a monkey in front. LOL!

It was next to impossible to find a thank you card there, as almost everything was a birthday card!

rinaz.net

Rachael, not content with the message written inside, decided to doodle a little. Quite an artistic streak!

rinaz.net

But it was the thought that counts, and the family looked very happy to have received it 🙂

rinaz.net

And then it was time for us to depart. Claire and Alex to the airport for their honeymoon. And us … well, back to real life. I was a little sad to be leaving such a lovely, idyllic, beautiful, and tranquil place.

rinaz.net

By the way, Cart and I stopped by the hot springs to have a look-see. At long last! The smell of sulphur was pretty evident.

rinaz.net

It was strangely charming seeing people picnicing around. It reminds me so much of the outings my clan that we had every now and then.

rinaz.net

I was really curious to go for a dip and give it a try. Maybe with the power of the hot spring, all my maladies will disappear and I’ll come out a supermodel-esque.

But it was too bad that I didn’t have anyone joining me. I’m quite shy! Plus it was starting to rain, so it didn’t seem too safe for me …

I wonder when we’ll visit here again! Cart? Claire? Alex? Clairex?!

Claire gets married! Part 1

This post is so backtracked, but better later than never I guess!

Anyway, I’m sure you would have been familiar with my friend Claire. We met for the first time at my first Pink Italy meet.

rinaz.net

From the get go, we get along really well, and shared loads of things in common. I’m really happy that I’ve finally made a good friend here in Rome. In fact, I’m amazed that we’ve been friends for only a year. Feels like we’ve known each other since childhood.

Anyway, earlier in the year, Claire told that that she was getting married to her long time boyfriend, Alex. I was most excited for her.

At length, it was finally her hen day (not hen night, because we both get tired when the evening comes and we’re totally not into men jumping out of a cake) and we headed to Hard Rock Cafe Roma for some lunch.

rinaz.net

Call me a mountain tortoise, but I don’t think I’ve ever eaten at HRC before. It looks really lush and I couldn’t help but to take a camwhorey picture of me.

The first thing we had was the nachos. Check out how large the freaking thing is. And if you could believe it or not, is a one person portion!

rinaz.net

But they were oh so good! I love the jalapenos peppers, the sour cream, the cheese …  Yummy! Somehow we managed to devour everything!

rinaz.net

All gone!

By this time, we were already starting to feel full. But it was too late to turn back now, as our main course has already arrived.

This is Claire’s fajitas, which is kind of cool. Sort of like a DIY kebab.

rinaz.net

And this is my salmon sandwich. I didn’t like it too much. It was tad bit too charred, making it taste like charcoal, and I didn’t want to finish it at all. For it’s price, I’d rather eat a round pizza at a pizzeria.

rinaz.net

Nevertheless, it was an experience eating here, as I looked around at the interesting decorations and pieces on the wall, like Elton John’s actual outfit from one of his concerts and an autographed Beatle’s poster.

After our very filling lunch, since we were more or less around Termini, on a whim, I decided to drag Claire to go to a random salon to prettify ourselves. Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of places which are opened as the 25th April, happened to be the Italian Independence day.

But eventually we found a Chinese salon opened! And we bravely went inside. Claire went for a pedicure while I had a much needed hair cut.

After about an hour, this is what Claire’s feet looked like :

rinaz.net

Pretty feet!

And this was how I looked like :

rinaz.net

Awesome! I don’t really fancy straight hair, but the entire experience was fantastic. Really spiffy and it was only for 15 euro for shampoo, cut and style! While the salon near my house would charge at least double that. Don’t get me wrong, they did a good job, but it was just too pricey for me.

So yes, I’d definitely go to the Chinese salon again!

We then headed to Claire’s house to hang out, said hi to Alex, and played with her evil black cat, Ciro. And then unabashedly, I completely stretched out, lay down and took custody of the sofa. Something I’d never do, even at my relative’s house

The next thing I knew, Cart drove over and the four of us were walking towards the pizzeria to have dinner.

As I was still rather full, so I asked if Claire would share a pizza with me.

rinaz.net

Really yummy pizza margherita. While Cart had this cool looking pizza cacio e pepe (it was really tasty, but I can’t even finish a bite cos it’s really thickening)

rinaz.net

Alex and Cart were talking over various topics, rather animatedly, as usual.

rinaz.net

While by this time, Claire and I were both has used up all our batteries … so we hardly talked …. we were so exhausted! And here are our exhausted faces.

rinaz.net

And here I end my post abruptly. Kbai.

Losing more than 10kg

Growing up, I’ve always been skinny. Family members would always call me a crane, bamboo stick … Because when I was in school, I could never gain more than 50kg.  That’s really thin for someone who’s 1.61m.

rinaz.net

It was only after I’ve started working when I started to gain weight. What with my new-found money, I suddenly could go and eat all the food that I’ve always craved. Mcdougals. Burger queen. Especially Long John Silvers. I loved them all.

Burrito
Picture by Dainty Chef. Not the same thing, but close enough!

Anyway, coupled with stress and boredom (two very bad combination) the weight just kept going up. They say that falling in love makes you gain weight too. And after moving to Rome, my weight ballooned up to 63 kg. But it still kept going up. Till about a year ago, quite number of people kept commenting that I’ve gained weight noticeably.

rinaz.net

I paid no attention to them because, well, I tended to filter out hurtful comments and was in a sort of denial. Even when my trousers were getting tight, I kept thinking to myself .. “Gosh, did they shrink in the washing machine?

I was pretty much like that till when this picture was taken :

rinaz.net

This was when Daphne, Serene and Nick stayed over with us on their European vacation. I looked so FAT and so puffed up in this picture. What happened? And I can’t blame this on bad angles or a bad picture. Because there were loads of pictures like that.

I couldn’t deny the numbers on the weighing machine. I was almost reaching 68 kg. And seeing that number, and the picture was what shook me up and made me decide to change.

But one thing about me is that I’ve never believed in diets or pills and quick fixes. I won’t take them because I don’t want to get the yoyo effect, or that I’d gain all the weight back when I stop taking the pills.

rinaz.net

First step was to go for regular jogs. I was inspired by my friend Claire, who started to go jogging and was already losing quite a bit of weight since then. It was an inspiration to me. But I didn’t want to disappoint myself, so I never went jogging for the intention of losing weight but for health and feeling better.

First I started with 2 km runs. And then upped it up eventually to 5km. And I did lose weight. Very very slowly. Up to a point that it seemed that I didn’t lose any weight and thought that I hit a plateau.

It was only after the fasting month when my weight went down quite significantly. I know that it was probably not healthy, but I was determined not gain them all back.

Too sleepy to eat
Too sleepy to eat

By this time, my eating habits has changed quite drastically, because after a month of fasting, my appetite and cravings went down, so I continued to have small meals. And at the same time, I continued jogging and eventually I found out that I could jog for 10 km non stop.

Woah! Such an achievement for me! I never thought that I could do long distance. Makes me motivated to aim for a half marathon! (But maybe in 2013. Baby steps)

To my glee, after months of monitoring, instead of the weight going back to before, it just went down. It was just so cool. And at the beginning of this year (after the crazy Xmas and New Year’s feast) I’ve gone down to my optimal BMI (according to wii-fit)

rinaz.net

And now that a year has passed since that picture was taken, I’ve lost more than 10 kg. That just boggles me. That I’ve been carrying 10kg extra all these while. Carrying regular amount of groceries is already so tiring. How did I carry 10kg?

At this point of time, I’m hovering between 55 and 56kg. And it seems to be staying that way, even when I’m not jogging regularly at the moment.

Truth be told, I don’t feel any different. But Cart tells me that my stamina has increased and I complain less when we go around walking. And as the seasons turn and I change from my winter clothes to my old spring-summer clothes, they turned out to be annoyingly big. Some of them are rather new! I feel no satisfaction of diminishing returns!

rinaz.net

Some of my trousers could just be pulled straight off my butt if I don’t wear a belt with it. Even that sexeh jeans I have up there is starting to be loose. And my beautiful bras! I can’t wear them as I’m not a 36C cup any-more.

rinaz.net

But despite all that, I think I look better now. And I can’t get over the fact that I’m about the same weight as when I was in my mid 20s.  But I hope I don’t lose any more. Any more, and I think I’d be too skinny!

And to end this post, this is a nice picture of me :

rinaz.net

And a side by side :

rinaz.net

Migrating overseas : What people think

A little late on the bandwagon, but I’ve been meaning to do the “What people think I do” meme for a while.

rinaz.net

Living overseas has been an enriching experience, but I’m sorry, it’s not all that bed of roses like what most people think!

A little crazy over bling

I’ve unleashed the bling monster in me recently. My eyes would dilate when I go next to an accessories shop and when I spot something I like, my IQ goes down and I’ll point and squeal out “Oooh! Shiny!

But it’s really unevitable when you’re walking down central Termini (right in the area of the train station) and there are loads of affordable and pretty accessories.

Remember my butterfly charm bracelet? I had loads of nice comments about it when I wore it out. I think this was less than 15 euro, but it looks so much more expensive than that.

rinaz.net

Leopard bow ring! It’s just a cheap little plastic ring, but it’s so eccentric and cute and it makes me feel so happy.

rinaz.net

This bracelet below reminds me a little bit of a Tiffany bracelet. But it looks so much more exquisite and costs probably 500 times cheaper.

rinaz.net

Yellow rose plastic ring! So vibrant and I don’t even need to water it … hehehe … I’ve been looking for this for a while! I think I’m subconsciously influenced by Kandee Johnson.

rinaz.net

The flower below doubles as a brooch as well as a hair clip. Small flower hair clips seem to be a fashion nowadays in Rome. It would cost about 10 euro in a regular shop, but in Termini you could get it for only 3. The green pearl necklace I got from Porta Portese Sunday Flea market for the same price.

rinaz.net

Angry bird necklace which I got more for laughs cause Cart is mad about this dumb game. I could always channel Naomi Campbell and throw it at him …

rinaz.net

Zebra! I love animal pendants and I like to take him out for trot every now and then.

rinaz.net

These are only two euro! So pretty! They are a little heavy though, these mini chandeliers.

rinaz.net

And finally … this was attraction at first sight for me … Imagine cherries hanging on your ears … So cute!

rinaz.net

Phew! I think I’m a little calmer for now, with the acessories craze. It should pass just like my mekap craze. But then again, at the back of my mind at this point of time, I’m wondering if I should try to be on a look out for a mustache necklace though, those are so funny!

And so I’m a working woman now …

Yikes! I’ve been updating this blog less frequently, pretty much because I’ve been working for a couple of months now and the almost hour long commute has been zapping my energy out that I just faint on the bed by the time I reach home.

rinaz.net
In case you’re wondering where this picture originated from

And here’s what I’ve been up to … *drum rolls* I’m now a nursery English Teacher.

Haha, what a choice huh?

To be honest, prior to living in Rome, I thought that it was kind of like a step down (if you know what I mean) having paper qualifications and years of teaching experience in a Secondary school and then now I teach mainly 3 – 5 year olds.

But then again, I do enjoy it for most part as I love kids. And how can you not just melt when you see cute and adorable children with those big eyes and thick lashes and those rosy cheeks, that you can’t help to pick them up to cuddle them. And they seem to have a sense of curiosity around them, chattering about in their little voices, “Teacher! Lo sai che bla bla bla?”

rinaz.net

So sometimes I think I’m really lucky. I get to play with kids, masquerading as an English teacher.

Don’t get me wrong though, while it’s fun, it’s also hard work as keeping them focused is very challenging. And sometimes they tend to fight with each other and then obviously they cry. Can you imagine how chaotic a room of crying children is? More even so that, because I’m not that fluent in Italian, trying to explain certain things (like why you should be kind with others) is very challenging. I’ve learnt to be extremely patient and calm.

Sometimes I wish I could somehow reverse time back to when I first started teaching in Singapore, and changed my psychology. Rather than being easily annoyed, being patient would have rendered me a more effective educator.

So all in all, I’ve learnt not to look down or think that I’m downgrading myself. After all, if I enjoy what I’m doing, it’s not so bad isn’t it?

Moreover, it pays quite well enough for me to to buy nice crap for myself every now and then rather than having to depend on Cart all the time.

rinaz.net
My nice new charm bracelet I bought with my own money!

And who knows in the future, I could even save up and afford to buy on my own, a new scooter or even a car!

And that made me realize quite recently on how autonomous that I finally am becoming – after living here in Rome for some years, I’ve gotten a driver’s license, my own vehicle, I can speak basic Italian, and now that I’ve finally have my own banking account I actually feel like I’m quite up to the same level as I was in Singapore. My independence.

Guess it’s just a matter of time that everything fits in.

A nightmare I don’t want to experience again!

Last Thursday was probably one of the most stressful days that I’ve had in a very long time. So much so that I lost weight (which isn’t a bad thing) but I don’t ever want to experience it again!

The story goes like this :

rinaz.net

Wednesday evening at my workplace, Sam the scooter decided to just stop working. When I pressed the ignition, nothing happened. Not even the lights switched on. Which led me to believe that it was a battery failure. So I called Cart up for help and he arrived later in the evening to attach his cable from his battery to mine to temporarily give life to Sam and accompanied me in his car as I rode to my regular mechanic.

The only issue was that because it was late in the evening, and the mechanic needed time to diagnose the issue. I still needed to go to work the next day. No problem … I’ll just take the public transportation. I can deal with this. I’ll just have to get out of the house earlier.

rinaz.net

Just to let you know, to get to my workplace, I’d have to take the bus and travel about 3km. Then take the subway, change to a connecting line, and then take a train. After that, walk another 3km from the train station to my workplace. If all goes well, I could reach my workplace in about an hour and a half.

But unbeknownst to me, as I took the bus, I realised that there was a transport strike going on. The bus and subway started their strike at 8.30am so I (along with a whole mass of people) had to rush. But growing up in a cosmopolitan country like Singapore, the crowd wasn’t such a big deal. The train left a few minutes after I boarded, and I ended reaching work rather early.

By the way, transport strikes are pretty frequent in Italy. Sometimes even twice a month. But it’s normally held on Fridays.

rinaz.net

But it was after work when the nightmare really started.

As I had to cover another teacher during the weekend, I decided to carry some substantial amount of children books and materials. It was probably about 10kg or so. And I tell you, lugging that amount on a 3km distance (there were no bus services) nearly made me cry. On top of that, I had to rush over as the train strike starts at 2pm. I was half dead when I finally reached the train station.

The train didn’t arrive on time. In fact, it was an hour late. And when it finally arrived, the entire situation was chaotic. There were so many people and I felt like a sardine.

It felt kind of like this :

Being poked and hit (accidentally or not) was no fun. And then I still had to take the subway. By the time I reached my neighbourhood, it was already time to head to where I teach private tuition. Not even time for a proper lunch.

And when that was over, I walked another 3km all the way home.

As you can imagine, by the time I reached home, I was so exhausted, I slept as soon as my head hit the sofa. Completely dressed and all. I was that tired. Even if I were in my teens or early twenties, my body probably cannot take this physical punishment.

I don’t think anyone should experience what I experienced. Ever.

Which makes me wonder, maybe getting a foldable bicycle could be a good investment. As a back up plan in case these sort of things happen again.

Or even better … When will teleportation be invented already?!

Kiko BB Cream SPF 15 review

I was running out of my regular BB cream, but I didn’t really really think that I’d see anything like this here in Rome (High-end stores like Sephora doesn’t count because it’s kind of pricey for the regular consumer) Even though it’s been out for many years in Asia, BB creams are a relatively new thing in Europe.

Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are two brands of BB creams that are out for sale in Rome recently. One by Garnier and one by Kiko cosmetics. And here is the Kiko one!

rinaz.net

I was in a Kiko store a couple of months ago, and we saw a new display showing their new BB creams. It comes in 5 different shades ranging from

  • 01 – light
  • 02 – natural
  • 03 – rose
  • 04 – medium
  • 05 – dark.

I’m kind of surprised that I had to choose the darkest shade, considering that there are duskier ladies out there.

Nevertheless, I’m happy that there are a wider range of shades here as normally, loads of foundations and tinted creams sold in Rome are way too light for me.

rinaz.net

What’s interesting about this BB cream is that, it starts off light, almost white in colour. But don’t let that worry you, as when you rub it in the skin, it blends right in. In fact, for me, it blends in so well that it looks like I’m not using anything at all.

rinaz.net

It looks super natural, and at the same time, gives a light coverage. It does not help for the larger blemishes though, as you could see from the zit on my upper-lip.

rinaz.net

The price is 8.90 euro, which for 30 ml seems reasonable. I’ve been using it for about two months and the tube still feels quite full. The BB cream comes with a SPF 15, which seems low compared to regular BB creams, but at the same time, it’s great because it doesn’t render the skin an ashy colour which is the issue with anything with a high SPF.

rinaz.net

So far, I haven’t had any adverse reactions to it, and considering that I have combination skin, I’m happy that it lasted throughout the entire day for me. This is me, sneaking in a picture at the end of work 🙂

rinaz.net

Still looking great! But it does feel little bit oily towards the end of the day, but it isn’t that really big of a deal and can be blotted off.

To end, I really like this BB cream. It’s very light, and blends very well. Will definitely repurchase when my current tube ends 🙂

It’s snowing in Rome!

Ehm, it’s been a while. That even my friend Hisham asked why I haven’t been posting.

But don’t worry. You’re not forgotten! I’ve also not forgotten about the caption this contest! It’s just that I’ve been really really busy these several weeks and then I’ve been sick … Maybe as a compromise, I could have done more short ala posterous posts instead?

Anyway, to make it up to you, I’d like to share with you a beautiful thing that happened in Rome this weekend.

rinaz.net

It snowed!

rinaz.net

It probably isn’t a big deal to a lot of European countries, but for Rome, it’s very rare for her to have snow, so when there is one, it’s a big deal. It snowed a little, back in 2010 but this time round, the snow was predicted to be much stronger that the mayor of Rome declared schools and public offices to be closed on Friday and Saturday.

rinaz.net

Coincidentally, I had Fridays off from work, so I stayed at home and rested and spent time on the computer and slowly saw friends updating their facebook with pictures of how they’ve already had snow. I was feeling rather jealous because at my side, it didn’t snow at all! But the sky looked depressingly dark and it was just raining very badly.

And it kept on that way till Cart came back from work. Thus we both had a rather uneventful day, and got tired of waiting … but rousing up at 2am, this was what I saw :

How beautiful! And with the snow being white, it illuminated the neighbourhood and it didn’t look like night time at all! I went to bed all excited, and when I woke up properly at 7 am, I was greeted with this :

rinaz.net

Wow, how magical! And with the snow thicker than the last time, it really looked like a winter wonderland … I didn’t feel like I was in Rome at all!

rinaz.net

Everything was blanketed with a coat of soft, cold, white dust. As if a giant sprinkled the whole neighbourhood with icing sugar.

rinaz.net

I was so excited that despite the fact that I was still recovering from my flu, I decided to take a walk and explore the area by myself. Cart’s fast asleep and I really didn’t want to wait.

rinaz.net

Gosh, my scooter’s all covered with snow. It looks pretty, but I’m kind of worried if it’ll be damaged and will be fine for travelling next week. It’ll be such a hassle if I had to take public transportation. I’ve never experienced having a scooter in cold countries before.

rinaz.net

Cart’s car on the other hand seems to be better equipped for this, with the snow tires and all.

rinaz.net

Anyway, I went ahead and took my first few steps in the snow …

rinaz.net

Walk … walk … walk …

rinaz.net

Now that I think back, what a missed opportunity! Why didn’t I think of putting on some syrup on top and make ais kacang? Look at all the snow! I could have fed the whole of Singapore with this!

Nevertheless, thank goodness that this time round, I had proper snow boots to use! The last time I used my ugg boots, but the snow seeped in and melted, making it very uncomfortably cold and squishy!

My purple snow boots on the other hand, were very comfortable for me!

rinaz.net

First I explored the park which was near the house …

rinaz.net

Everything looked so magical and romantic … and of course rather cold … that I had to put my hands in my pockets ever so often … if not, it was easy to get frost bites.

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

I don’t know a bout you, but the entire scene just reminds me completely of a snow-sim in Secondlife. The only difference is that I cannot hit on page up to fly or teleport

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

So much snow that you can’t even read what’s on the signs!

To let you know how deep the snow was, it reached aproximately around my knuckle. It was really deep!

rinaz.net

And here I am completamente naturale, no mekap at all! Not even bb cream nor brow powder. I really couldn’t wait to be out of the house to explore.

rinaz.net

I just realised that I’m wearing exactly the same thing I wore the last time it snowed … LOL, maybe I’ve accidentally started a sort of tradition!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

At this point of time, I thought to myself, why just explore the neighbourhood? Since it rarely snows in Rome, why not explore a little bit more.

And so  I decided to walk to EUR, as how I normally would do when I used to go for my driving lessons.

rinaz.net

But on thing that I didn’t realise about walking in snow was how tiring it was. With each step, you had to dig deep to make sure you had a grip and it took more effort than walking normally. Before I even left the main street, I was already feeling tired … LOL!

Here’s an idea of how it’s like, walking in the snow :

Nevertheless, I trudged on and enjoyed the beauty in front of me.

rinaz.net

I really find the white snow on the trees, extremely, extremely charming.

rinaz.net

And at length, and probably about 40 minutes later, I eventually reached EUR and walked to the little lake.

rinaz.net

Poor ducks! They are probably really cold and hungry and was begging and quacking about when I approached them.

rinaz.net

The sad thing was that there was a little toddler boy who started to throw a snowball at them. He was scolded by his mother BUT THEN an adult man comes up and threw snowballs at the ducks. Why?!

rinaz.net

I continued walking … My gosh, how breathtaking this is! Is this really Rome? Doesn’t look like it at all! By the way, even in Napoli (which is warmer than Rome) had snow too!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

But one of the dangers about snow is that when it accumulates, it gets heavier and I saw loads of branches and trees broken under the heavy weight. Thank goodness there isn’t prickly fruits like durians growing in Europe. What an unpleasant way to expire …

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

At this point of time, I was really taken by the magic and the beauty and the charm … that I really wished that I could make out like this couple below too.

rinaz.net

Too bad someone was still asleep … bah! But that’s the trouble with a couple with different different sleep timings. I’m a morning person, while he’s a night owl!

Anyway, while halfway to the middle of the path, there was a locked gate not letting us pass through, so I had to retrace my steps back.

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

I really liked this shot, hand imprints probably made by a mother and her son (or daughter) … it was so heartwarming

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

And here I am, about 3/4 on the way back home … by this time, my butt was feeling really sore from crunching in the snow all these while. I’m really working parts of the body that I’ve never worked before!

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

And eventually, I reached home at about half past 10 and by this time, there were loads of people outside, playing in the snow, throwing snowballs and building snowmen … It’s such a heartwarming and delightful scene seeing so many people, with their loved ones having fun together.

It’s all so freaking charming!
