What to do with a 100 litre Nutella Jar?

Hi everyone! Do you remember this picture taken last year?

rinaz.net with a giant nutella jar

It’s currently my profile picture on facebook and so far, a lot of people has liked it. Coincidentally it was featured under buzzfeed.

The picture was taken in a supermarket near our house called ipercoop. I blogged about this place some while back about free trade chocolates,  and our mutual friend Francesco, who works there liked it so much that he decided to give me the very same Nutella jar as a present. It’s sitting comfortably at home right now.

I’ve no idea what to do with it. My in laws think that the top could be unscrewed and I can store things inside, but it’s completely glued on. And sorry to those who think that it’s real,  but the jar is completely made of plastic. And empty. If it were a real Nutella jar, I doubt I could have even lifted a glass jar filled with probably 100 litres of Hazelnut spread.

Nevertheless, what I can do with the jar at the moment, is that it’s totally a great prop for photo ops. Like this :

That cake on the table is a homemade Sachertorte by the way. Cartcart made it and it’s so delicious.

By this time, you’ll probably be thinking, what on earth do all these pictures have got to do with Nutella, but hey it’s my personal blog. I’ll do what I like :p

Currently here in Italy there is this promotion where you could get your own Nutella jar with your name on it. I think it’s a good publicity since a lot of people like to have their own personalised one.

You don’t even need to buy a jar it seems. Just go to the nearest supermarket, find the display area and find your name. And then stick it to your jar later. Cart and I tried to find our names, but either :

rinaz.net with a giant nutella jar

  1. Our names are too popular that it’s snatched up in minutes
  2. Or our names are not popular enough to justify it being printed out

And it wasn’t just in Coop, practically every other supermarket that we went to, we weren’t able to find our names there.

Technically, you could try going online to sign up and have it delivered to your mailbox. But  it seems to be such a hassle, as fellow blogger Nerys has experienced and to me, it doesn’t really matter in the end. I’m not that crazy over Nutella (I mean, I like eating it, but I can still go on without it)

By the way, did you hear about World Nutella Day being ordered to cease and desist earlier this year? Something to do with the trademark use. It’s now de-instated though, which is a good thing as it doesn’t bode well for their publicity. This has always been something I don’t understand. Why are there some companies so afraid of people writing or taking pictures of something, when it can be positive free publicity for them?

Oh well.

To me, sleeping is a more productive way to spend time rather than being upset about the weather 😛

Speaking of being productive, I tried to start on designing some postcards. Kicked by this guilty feeling that I’ve received so many postcards from friends all around the world. I should have sent them some a long time ago. I’m so ashamed of myself. It’s just that Italian postal offices are so daunting …

Anyway! I have loads of photography paper I got bundled when I buy my ink cartridges, so I decided to experiment to see how it looked like printed out.

rinaz.net

The first one looks good, the second one too. But by the time the third one came out, it looked really bad. I think I like green too much :p

I’m tempted to just have it printed in bulk, but the company I found allows you to print a minimum amount of 500. Not sure if I want to do that, especially if it’s just for one design. Wouldn’t be so bad if I could have 100 x 5 different designs.

By the way, while the weather in Rome is being bad these days, it’s not as bad as what happened in Sardegna (and of course what happened in the Philippines) 🙁

My handsome friend on the telley

So I was channel surfing on the telley late last night and stumbled on this channel where it happened to be that they were doing a rather seedy advertisement. But it’s nothing out of the ordinary by the way, as nudity is common on Italian tv during late nights.

(And no, I’m not posting any of those sort of pictures in my blog)

I was just about to change the channel when I saw this face :

rinaz.net

He looks very familiar …

It’s when he gave this big smile was when I realised who he was!

Why it’s our dear friend from Mondo Convenienza! Awww! He’s so famous now! I wonder where we’ll spot him in next? 🙂

Changing seasons

It’s starting to finally look like Autumn where I am. As sad as I am, with the thought that Summer is finally gone, it’s still lovely to see the Autumn scenery. The leaves on the trees are changing it’s colour to reds and oranges and yellows. It’s kind of romantic.

rinaz.net autumn

As I walk around the neighbourhood, people are starting to go around wearing heavier coats. Some are even wearing furry little hats although I think that it’s still not that cold yet (Which is strange, coming from me, a girl who grew up in the tropics)

If you are here in Rome during these times, in the markets, you’d see loads of Autumn fruits and vegetables around – like chestnuts, pumpkins, cabbages, pears … all wonderful things to eat.

rinaz.net autumn

Which reminds me, we should start roasting chestnuts soon! And it’s time to make pumpkin pie again!

Right now I’m wearing my brown pile sweater underneath my trusty blue thermal jacket – my summer clothes already tucked away deep in the cupboard long ago, in the cambio stagione routine.

With the drop in temperature, we finally had our heaters turned on a few days ago. As you know, we had to have it checked first before it gets the green light. It was the same boiler man that came over from the previous year. I don’t think he remembers me, as he asks me again if I were Filipina.

As he did his job, we started chatting (or rather, I let him talk) and offered him a slice of banana bread. Somehow along the way, somehow we talked about jobs, about how his wife is a lawyer and then he asked me what I did. “Insegno inglese al domicilio” I replied and he did something that was quite unexpected, he scribbled Cart’s number (which was on the libretto) on a piece of paper and said, “Well, just in case my kids need an English teacher“.

That was kind of nice, even if I don’t think that anything will come out of it.

With the drop in temperature, I find myself using the car more frequently. As convenient and economical it is using the scooter, during the colder temperatures, it can be extremely uncomfortable and frostbites are a real risk.  I got really sick having to commute to work and back using the scooter throughout the winter and would rather spend a bit more on fuel and whatnots than having to go through that again.

stickrinaz and stickcart

Speaking of which, it’s been over a year and a half since getting my car. By now, I should have long taken off the P plate. The irony is though, instead of being more confident, I still get mini panic attacks when I’m on the road sometimes – like imagining that someone would run across the street as I’m driving by, which is probably a non issue as that’s something only an insane person would do.

In any case, I’m not sure what else I can update you with, so I’ll just end abruptly here.

Look what arrived today!

Toon rinaz is so excited at the thought of eating fresh food again, she’s crying tears of joy!

Personally I think the fridge is kinda big for being just the two of us. But Cartcart likes it, and he was very choosy about what he wanted. It’s an Ariston Hotpoint by the way, an Italian made one.

Prior to this, the past weekends, he dragged me to all the different electric shops in Rome and we spent hours and hours looking at the different models.

I just don’t understand why we had to go to so many stores to see essentially the same thing.  I don’t take that much time myself when I have to go shopping! And normally I’d do a mental check-list as follows :

  • Do I need this? (If yes, continue to next step)
  • Do I like this? (If yes, continue to next step)
  • Can I afford this? (If yes, continue to next step)
  • Go ahead and buy it!

But Cart needed to examine all the fridges carefully one by one. Even when we went to another shop with the exact same model, he’d look at it tenaciously and hounded the salesclerk with 1001 questions. It drove me crazy!

And when I commented about it, he’d reply, “But we should always aim for improvement in our lives and we deserve to have good things in the house”

Whatever you say, sayang!

In any case, the past week without a fridge didn’t go too bad in the end. In a way, it made us much more careful and creative with how we do our groceries. We had to be very mindful of what and how much food we bought.

rinaz.net

(I got these fresh veggies from the market for 10 euro by the way)

I think the amount that we spent was noticeably less and most importantly, there was less wastage too as we had to be creative in trying to finish and cooking them as soon as possible.

rinaz.net

I also managed to find an mini fridge that Jacelyn gave a while back (Thank you so much!) So we could manage to store some of the more perishable stuff like milk, butter and cheeses.

rinaz.net

Technically, it  is big enough to fit about 4 canned drinks. So we had a lot of fun trying to play tetris with this fridge.

Kind of sad that our ritual is now coming to an end :p

Our fridge is dead

Our current fridge is the type where regular fridge is at the top, while the freezer is at the bottom.

The freezer has always seem to accumulate more ice whenever the door gets opened, which sometimes jams up the freezer shelf. But we’d simply scrape it off. This routine has served us relatively well the past years.

Last Tuesday though, there was so much ice accumulation that the freezer door wouldn’t close. I couldn’t take it any longer. Rather than waiting for Cart, I decided to defrost the fridge and solve the issue once and for all.

So I turned off the fridge, put all the foodstuff in a freeze bag, put on a pair of gloves and got to work, scraping off as much ice as I could. My fingers started to get numb even with the gloves on. There was so much ice that it almost filled up a whole pail! I kid you not!

It took about a good 4 hours for the freezer to become completely clear from the ice. I admired my handiwork, wondered why we didn’t do this earlier and then restarted the fridge again.

It was only several hours later that we realised that the fridge didn’t seem to get as cold as before. It started to beep around every 4 hours (it only did that before that when the door was left opened for too long) and the freezer didn’t freeze as usual.

I was horrified. Did I break the fridge?! I was really not keen for us on spending money to get a new fridge and hoped that the problem could be fixed.

In the meanwhile,  we tried to salvage as much food as humanly possible. I cooked as much frozen food as possible: pizza, vegetables and whatnots. There were also stuff like pandan leaves that my family brought over for me and fresh curry leaves that we brought over from Singapore. Both of these are impossible to find in Rome and thus, very precious to me. I made foodstuff like Nasi Lemak and Pandan Agar-agar.

And for the past meals, Cart and I have been trying to eat as much of them as possible so as to not waste them. Nasi Lemak with sambal for lunch, and then dinner, and then lunch again. My goodness. I felt so stuffed, it was as if I was being prepared to be harvested for foie-gras. It was hard to breathe at one time.

In any case, the repairman came over the next day to take a look at the fridge (I am duly impressed that he arrived at 2.30pm, considering that our appointment time was from 2 – 6pm) and the thing I feared most came true. He said that the pipes were damaged and it was irreparable. We’d have to get a new fridge.

rinaz cry

Oh gosh. I felt horrible and guilty. If I wasn’t so impulsive, the freezer would probably still be working right now. I hated the thought of us having to fork out at least another 600 euro or so on a new fridge. We’re not poor, but we’re not so rich that we could just make a big expense like that without batting an eye.

But Cart was really sweet and comforted me, justifying that it could happen to anyone. He said that he himself damaged a fridge one time accidentally, and insisted that the fridge was already 8 years old and towards the end of it’s lifespan anyway.

(Why is Cart such a sweetie?!)

At this point of time, we’ve been looking at a few fridges to replace the broken one. So far, Cart seems interested in getting this Samsung one which is frost free and is class A++ which means that it uses less energy and thus cheaper to run in time. Too bad it doesn’t come bundled in with a free tablet :p

The bad news is, a lot of my precious frozen herbs didn’t make it and I had to throw them away. The biggest irony is that I could have used them sooner before the incident, but didn’t because using them means that there would be less of them and I preferred the idea of having them for as long as possible.

Now I have none left :/

In any case, I can now look back now and laugh at this situation. This experience has been interesting so far, and I never realised how dependent we have been with having a fridge. From this point till we get our new fridge, we’d have to change our habits in buying our groceries in smaller quantities more frequently.

By the way, you know how last Tuesday, being Eid al-Adha is a day of sacrifice?

Yeah, our fridge was totally sacrificed. Along with my herbs too.

What I wore yesterday

You know how during the holidays, people tend to dress up nicely? Well, it was Eid-al-adhar yesterday,  and this was how I dressed up  :

rinaz.net

They each had a function. My baju kurong, which I like to wear during festive days like these. A windbreaker and a makeshift headgear tied to my neck to protect myself from the cold Autumn wind. My purple sling bag which is great for travelling on scooters. My purple canvas shoes, for easy slip on and off. Coloured socks (The first thing I grabbed from the drawer) and of course Sam the scooter! I have had enough of trying to search for parking in that area. It was such a breeze just parking Sam at a little corner by the road.

In any case, as hipster as I am, it still feels odd going out like that. I look horrible! Hahaha! I just had to thicken my skin. :p

Have you ever seen anything like this in Italy before?

When you are in a shop in Asia, it’s not unusual to see objects such as the Maneki Neko or a little Budai statue near the register – these are objects which are believed to bring fortune and luck.

Growing up in Singapore, I tend to see small coins glued to calculators, which I think is done in the hopes that the owner’s money will multiply.

I’ve always assumed that these are the sort of thing which is distinctively Asian, till I stepped into a pizzeria in Magliana. There was a little figurine with multiple Euro coins next to her, placed right next to the cash register.

rinaz.net

I didn’t know that Italians had this belief too. The fact that it had European coins could mean that it came from other parts of Euro. But it’s the first time that I’m seeing anything like this in a shop in Italy.
