A candidate for my new lappy

Hi everyone!

As you probably know, my computers are going bonkers. Both of them! It’s like they both had an agreement with each other to go on strike at the same time.

Rinaz Workspace

Nevertheless, it’s been almost 5 years since I’ve had them. While I still prefer that they were still working, and I still love them, I think it’s time for an upgrade and I’m impressed that they’ve lasted so long.

I’m a proponent for desktops, but I’ll go with laptops this time round as there could be the time that arises when I need to do some editing on the go.

For me, I need a computer which is powerful enough to handle heavy multimedia applications – I edit photos, create cartoons and make videos. Anything with too little memory makes me ragey when the rendering takes a really long time or worse, hang!

rinaz.net

(Speaking of which, I really miss teaching multimedia to my former kids in Singapore. It’s been such a long time and I’m amazed at how much they’ve grown up!)

I’ve friends who are Pro-Macs. I really don’t mind one. I’ve used one when studying before and I think it’s good to be fluent in different operating systems. Moreover Macs are reputedly the best when it comes to multimedia. But the entry level Macbook Pro costs 1.6k SGD and that’s a little over the budget.

rinaz.net

Or I could get their cheapest offering of the Mac Mini at 800 SGD. But it’s not really that portable – how are you going to lug a monitor around?

Unless I could bother someone who could get a Macbook Pro for me at a discount, it’s really not a viable option for me.

So I’ve been doing a bit of research online for a replacement computer. At the moment I found something that I really like – The HP Envy Notebook PC

rinaz.net

The specs look really nice. It has the new Core i7 processor and a 8GB memory. So this should be doubly fast compared to my current desktop. So hopefully a 10 minute video will render in minutes instead of hours.

It doesn’t appear to have a DVD reader, but that’s fine as I don’t use it much apart from installing some software for the first time. Plus I’ve an external one anyway. And at 1.3K SGD, I think it’s a fair price.

Although I wish it had something like the Lenovo Red Trackpoint. I love that. I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like a regular laptop touchpad, which is why I use a mouse all the way. I’m old school like that.

At this point of time, I’m not sure whether to get the regular one or with a 200 SGD topup, the touchsmart version where you could touch the screen and navigate with your fingers. Although to be honest, I didn’t use the touchscreen function much on my touchsmart desktop, unless my mouse runs out of batteries or when Cart decides to be annoying.

Win8 is supposed to maximize these capabilities, nevertheless I still have a bit of time for deciding anyway.

Sometimes I wonder, why go through all these hassle and get a computer from Singapore rather than getting it from Italy directly?

Two main reasons. One is that the Italian keyboard, which is quite different. It took a while for me just to find the @ and the ‘ symbol on an Italian keyboard, although using Cart’s spare laptop these past weeks, I’m getting a little bit used to it.

rinaz.net

But the main reason is the price. Italy has a higher goods tax, so the same thing in Italy costs 899 euro which, when converted is about 1.5k SGD. A good 200 SGD more. For that price, I could easily upgrade to the touchsmart netbook! (Which I still have yet to decide on getting)

rinaz.net

So I guess, a big probability that unless I discover a better option, I’d get the Hp Envy notebook. My only worry though, what if breaks down within the warranty period while I’m in Rome? I don’t think that it is covered in another country.

Make your own burger buns!

Recently, I was hankering for a good burger. We found an awesome butcher in Mercato Piazza San Giovanni di Dio where you could get grade cuts of meat. I got for myself some ground meat for the patties. But the problem was the buns!

rinaz.net

(This is a cheat picture as it’s a vegetarian burger)

In Italy, the ingredients for regular, freshly made bread are flour, yeast, water and salt.

Any other additional ingredients (like sesame seeds, eggs, milk etc.) are legally required to be called ‘special bread’ instead. Which is why it’s a good habit to read, or ask about the ingredients on the labels, especially when you are on a special diet.

Anyhow, one rule of thumb that I’ve discovered is that if these speciality breads (like sandwich breads, burger buns and hotdog rolls) are packaged in plastic, and are kept in the non refrigerated section, a big chance that these breads were treated with alcohol to make them soft.

rinaz.net

While there are some thoughts that it is justifiable to consume, as alcohol evaporates in high temperatures, I prefer to avoid it where I can. It’s such a chore trying to find speciality bread without ingredients that I do not consume, so imagine how enraptured I was when we found sandwich bread which was good for us!

Anyhow, I was so unhappy and feeling so indignant about unfair the whole situation was, that I was pleasantly surprised to find that Chef John, (who I adore) actually published a video on how to make burger buns. It looked so easy too. I was so intrigued that I was compelled to make them ASAP!

By the way, in Italian, yeast is lievito. We only managed to find the fresh cube ones rather than the dry ones. Not sure if one is better than the other. I’ve never worked with yeast before nor made bread, so it was fascinating to see them grow …

rinaz.net

And grow … At one point, I was concerned that the dough would get too big for the sheet tray.

rinaz.net

But I think we just need a bigger sheet tray :p

rinaz.net

Oh gosh everyone, if only you could smell the kitchen as the buns were freshly made. It was so lovely! So rustic! So comforting!

I’m so amazed I made these! They are so pretty! Plus the taste easily beats the one you get from the stores. Do try them out! You’d be so happy and proud of yourself when you make them.

At the moment, 4 of the cooked buns are in the freezer so we could defrost them when we are in the mood for burgers again (You need to consume fresh bread immediately as they turn hard after a few days) But I’d definitely make a new batch again in a heartbeat. They are amazing!

Sidenote : Look who followed me on instagram. I feel so omg-fangirl-moment. HAHAHAHA!

rinaz.net

I cannot sleep now :p

This is married life #6

Featuring stickrinaz! As compy is still bonkers :p

6am. I wake up to do my daily morning walk. Cart is still soundly asleep.

rinaz.net

I love seeing how peaceful and still it is in the neighbourhood.

rinaz.net

Save for the few people roaming around, like commuters waiting sleepily for their transport.

rinaz.net

Or the produce sellers. Ah! If only you could smell the intoxicating, sweet perfume of the peaches which are in season right now.

rinaz.net

A group of dog walkers and their adorable mutts.

rinaz.net

And of course, the morning joggers as they zoom past me.

rinaz.net

I enjoy my long morning walks. It’s interesting to see life at the start of a new day.

rinaz.net

After close to an hour, I come back home ….

rinaz.net

And Cart is still asleep and continues to sleep for the next couple of hours!

Such is the life of a morning person married to a night owl :p

How to make rice stuffed tomatoes

If you are in Rome around July, you’d see a lot of these types of tomatoes being sold.

rinaz.net

These are called pomodoro da riso and they are really big compared to the regular tomatoes that you usually use. The skin is firm, making them specially for stuffing rice. So today, I’ll show you how to make Pomodori Ripieni al Riso – which literally means, tomatoes filled up with rice.

You could use regular tomatoes too, but be sure that the tomatoes are big and firm – so that it doesn’t collapse under the oven.

First cut off the top and leave them to one side. Then take a spoon and dig a out the pulp inside. Be careful not to break any part of the skin – it’s a little tricky when it comes to the bottom part.

rinaz.net

When you are done, it should look like this. Try to scrape and remove as much seeds away.

rinaz.net

(If you were wondering, yes that is a computer. I like watching videos while doing chores :p )

Lightly salt the caps and the insides of the tomato and lay them upside down – this will remove the liquid from the tomato.

rinaz.net

This is the troublesome part – trying to remove as much seeds as possible from the pulp. I normally use two bowls for these (one for the pulp and the other for the cleaned pulp) and painstakingly scrape off the seeds with a dining knife.

It’s time consuming and annoying. You could of course leave some, but too much seeds can make your tomatoes taste bitter.

rinaz.net

And here is the cleaned pulp. Yes. This picture is necessary because of the amount of time I took for achieving this. Nowadays, I give Cart a black face whenever he wants to buy pomodoro da riso from the market :p

But the tough part is done!

rinaz.net

If you like, you can sieve the seeds, and rub a spoon over it for the juice to filtrate out, since that’s where most of the liquid is trapped. No need to be overzealous though.

rinaz.net

Now with the juice and the cleaned pulp, pulverize them together with some salt and garlic – about a garlic for two tomatoes. Some people might not like too much garlic, so you could just limit to one clove for your entire batch. But I like mine garlic-y.

No kisses for a while I guess :p

rinaz.net

When you are done, you should have an aromatic pink liquid that looks like this :

rinaz.net

Now separate the liquid into two containers. As one part will be used for the rice and another part for the potatoes. For each tomato that you have, add about a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil in the larger container.

rinaz.net

Next we use some rice. I’m using Riso Roma here, but you could also use arborio or carnaroli. Or any rice that is of the short and fluffy type.

rinaz.net

Depending on the size of your tomatoes, you use about 30 – 50g of rice for each tomato. It should be enough to almost fill the tomatoes completely. Let it rest in a cool place for at least 3 hours.

rinaz.net

After which, you could leisurely peel and cut some potatoes. I used 3 medium sized potatoes in the pan below. But if you like more, feel free to add more of course :p

Salt it generously and add enough olive oil to coat them.

rinaz.net

After 3 hours have passed, the rice would have expanded after absorbing the tomato juice.

rinaz.net

Now pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees.

And spoon the rice and juice mixture into the tomatoes. When it is half full, you can tear one fresh basil leaf into small pieces and drop it in each tomato. By the way for those in Singapore, I don’t know if Thai Basil makes a good substitute. I found some in Giant. But if you can’t find fresh basil, dried ones will work too.

rinaz.net

Another variation is to use mentuccia – these are the ones we have growing in the kitchen. The purple flowers are so pretty! When cooked, it gives a sharp taste with tones of mint and oregano.

rinaz.net

Once the tomatoes are filled up, tear up some more leaves and place them on top.

rinaz.net

And cover them with their respective caps. Remember the reserve tomato juice in the other container? This remaining tomato juice is to be poured on the potatoes – giving it a savoury taste.

rinaz.net

Cook in the oven for about 40 minutes or till the potatoes are cooked. The last 10 minutes, you might want to put them on grill function to crisp up the potatoes. And it will look like this!

rinaz.net

So delicious! A yummy and hearty meal 🙂

By the way, these are great be it eaten cold or warm – making it great for picnics or preparing it in advance if you have guests coming over. No need to use too much plates for these are they come in their own natural packaging that you eat!

Summer is the time when burglary is on the rise

Our mutual friends got robbed earlier this week while they were away on vacation. I was stunned when I heard about it. More so when I heard how professional they were – they didn’t touch the kindle, the xbox, the PC, the tablet … and instead managed to carry off with the safe, which was filled with keepsakes.

rinaz.net

I can’t imagine the distress that they were feeling. I felt really bad for them. And they weren’t themselves when we met them last Tuesday.

Coincidentally yesterday, police arrested a band of burglars comprising of 51(!) people. It was reported that they were trained to break in houses and they have been going all around Rome, breaking in houses, possibly for years.

You know, they could even be the same people who tried to burgle our house some years back. But that’s the issue during the summer and especially July-August where it gets insufferably hot making most Romans go on vacation. It’s mostly dead in the residential areas if you were to come here during these times making it ripe for the pickings for thieves and burglars.

Luckily, I was home while they were attempting to break in. But they were really good. They weren’t noisy, and didn’t made any unusual sounds, to the point that it sounded as if it was the cleaning lady doing her weekly mops. So imagine my surprise when I heard the door open and I saw two strangers at the door.

We’ve changed our locks to the deadbolt type since. But I’m a little bit nervous nevertheless, as Cart and I will be gone most of August. So we need to think about where to put our valuables. For sure I’ll be putting my savings in the bank. They can steal my computers – they are all broken anyway :p

Does clutter bugs you as much as it bugs me?

The thing about being in a relationship is that one is supportive of their partner despite their quirks and eccentric ways.

rinaz.net

For example, Cart loves to read. It’s a daily ritual for him to read in the morning before going to work, and then in bed before sleeping. I don’t mind it – after all, reading is a meaningful activity. It exercises and sharpens the mind.

The problem is, all of our bookshelves all bursting, completely filled with his comics and books. There is absolutely no more space to store them to the point that now you’d see piles of comics on his sidetable, in the bathroom, underneath the fishtank, on the sofa …

I’m the type of person who feels anxious out when things are not in their place or when there are too much clutter. If I wanted to clean the floor for example, and there are clutter on the floor, I feel bothered that when I try to move it and Cart would stop me, all earnestly, “There is a system. Do not touch! I’ll deal with it myself” and then he’d be busy with other things and then weeks pass by  and I’d feel twitchy, seeing the dust bunnies on the floor. I’m not a neat freak, but there is a point where I cannot stand the dirtiness longer.

rinaz.net

I tried to negate the situation by gifting him a kindle, which he loves. But he still buys physical comics anyway, since there isn’t really anything to our knowledge that can replace the experience.

Sigh.

Another good point about Cart is that he loves to cook. He’s passionate about it and he is very meticulous and puts so much care and dedication when he prepares his meals. While we were preparing lunch one day, he mentioned something which sounded really meaningful to me :

“Cooking is like love. You take your time do your best to understand and with what you have experienced, try to improve the next time because you are in love with that you do”

He looked so solemn and serious and I wondered if he was talking about his past relationships and he answered, “What’s the difference?”

I was completely floored by how profound and deep the whole conversation was.

rinaz.net

Anyway, every food lover loves his tools. And each time we go to the supermarket (or even the mercato), Cart would always stop by the kitchen utensil section and pour over the ceramic pots or the chef knives and whatnots.

This year alone, these was a promotion in the two supermarkets that we frequently go to – Ipercoop and Panorama. Both had a promotion where you collect stickers to get a promoted item for a discount. You get a sticker each time you spend 10 euro.

The promotion just happened to be baking tins, and ceramic pans, ceramic baking pots and professional kitchen knives. All the things that mesmerises Cartcart. You should have seen his pupils dilate and we’d go to the supermarket and spend much more compared to our usual weekly expenditures just so that we could get the stickers. Cart would justify himself, saying that we are going to consume them anyway.

rinaz.net

You could also get certain cheaper items that is worth a sticker each. So taking advantage of this, our kitchen is full of muesli bars, yoghurt, pre-made tomato sauce, sweets. Nowadays we’d have to play tetris with the boxes and jars because it is completely stuffed. Unlike books, food expires, and it’s such a waste of money if we are unable to finish them in time.

Of course with the additional baking tins, and ceramic pans, ceramic baking pots and professional kitchen knives … Where on earth do we put them? Where can we store it away so it doesn’t hurt my eyes to see them?

I worry that in time, our house will looks like a hoarder’s house. I don’t want! Watching each episode makes me so sad!

rinaz cry

I love you Cartcart. But I wish you knew how anxious I feel when I see clutter around the house. I feel panicky and flustered. Ok, so it might sound so typical housewife-y I can’t be the only one who feels this way!

Fagioli Borlotti : Have you seen such a cute bean before?

In Italy, there is this bean called ‘Fagioli Borlotti’ and call it odd, but I find them really cute.

rinaz.net

Unlike the typical green coloured beans, the pod for fagioli borlotti is red and the inside is a beautiful red and white marble pattern which I love.

rinaz.net

With the beans, you could use them in a lot of dishes like minestrone, or pasta fagioli. But one of the things that Cart loves to make with them is Fagioli Borlotti all Ucceletto – A hearty and rustic dish that originated from Tuscany.

It’s quite straight forward to make. You will need :

  • 400g Fagioli Borlotti
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic
  • 200g Tomato Sauce (Pure tomato! Not ketchup!)
  • Fresh Sage
  • 2 tbs of EVOO
  • Salt and Pepper

In a pot, heat up the extra virgin olive oil and fry the garlic and sage. When the garlic turns golden brown, add the fagioli borlotti, and then the tomato. Add salt and pepper and lower the fire and let it cook till the gravy thickens up.

Serve with a bit of extra virgin olive oil on top and eat it with some toasted bread. And enjoy!

rinaz.net

Nom! I like them as much as I like baked beans. I wonder if Cart would flip if I added a fried egg to eat it with :-p

Fasting month is here again

It’s now the 3rd day of fasting for us in Rome.

Roman Skies

Initially, there was a bit of confusion as it was supposed to start on the 9th, accordingly to the Grande Moschea di Roma website. I was puzzled as to why we had to do an extra day compared to in Singapore, but Cart and I were getting mentally ready to start the Ramadan anyway.

If it weren’t for Kynne, who messaged me, I think we’d probably went ahead. So I double checked online. Interestingly, instead of updating that page, then on another article, it says on the 10th instead. Calling up my friend Bahija confirmed it. What a confusion. I think that because we are in the minority, there isn’t much there isn’t that much influence in the mass media. It would also help if the people here are more technologically savvy.

Anyway, impressively the couple of days passed by without much drama. Considering that the days here are much longer compared to a few years back. This time round, we have to wake up at about 3am and we break our fast at about 8.40pm. About 17 hours. Nevertheless, Cart and I do the things that we normally do on our day to day basis.

It has been manageable so far. Although, I really do feel bad for Kynne, who’s living in Stockholm. Fajr starts at 2am for her and Magrib will be at 10pm! I was stunned. 20 hour of no eating and no drinking. To be honest, I don’t think that’s healthy, and fasting shouldn’t be to the extent that we harm ourselves. I’m sure that the rules are flexible, but there are different schools of thought and it’s up to the person as what to do.

Now that I’m fasting, I’ve stopped my jogging to conserve energy, and instead do my daily morning walks so as not to lose muscle mass so that my body doesn’t go into a big shock when I do my 10K and 15K runs when in Singapore. So looking forward to them! ^_^ Nabbycat twittered a link on how to training for the marathon during the fasting month. But uh. Because of the different geographical situation that I am in, I don’t think it’s for me.

Anyway, as I have no idea what else to talk about, I’ll just end this post here abruptly :p

Is it raining or the clouds sucking up moisture from the sea?

While on our way from Calcata to Lido di Tarquinia, I spotted out this amazing sight. Probably not as impressive in the pictures, but I was definitely stupefied.

rinaz.net

It looks as if it is raining heavily in one spot. Poor things caught in it must not have had a pleasant day. in fact, parts of Rome got flooded during the weekend.

rinaz.net

At the same time though, it looks so cool. As if the clouds are sucking in moisture from the sea. It looked like an alien movie somewhat.
