Week 12

As you remember, about week ago I was supposed to do 27 km for my long distance run for my marathon training. However, I couldn’t complete it due to the sudden pain in my left soleus.

So I went the doctor’s for a specialist consultation and an ecograph scan on my leg.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

I don’t enjoy spending a large amount of money, and am now 100 euro poorer, which is completely messing up my 52 week money challenge. It would probably be cheaper if I went to a public one, but for the fact that getting an appointment would take months. Nevertheless, it’s a peace of mind to be told that there wasn’t anything serious and that I can start again running soon.

And so, I haven’t been jogging at all for week 12. I’ve just been taking it easy instead, doing  short walks. Thankfully, my legs feel much better now and walking up and down the stairs for example, doesn’t seem to be a big chore any more.

To be honest though, I feel so envious whenever I pass by someone running, and at times I feel jittery as it does not feel right, to not do something that I’ve been in a habit doing for the past two months or so.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

I think the experience in week 11 has taught me that cutting back once in a while, important for the body to heal and recover. And now with this knowledge, if somehow I could go back in time, I would tweak my timetable much differently.

In my defence though, the table that I obtained is from the same site where I trained for my Roma Ostia half marathon last year, and it seemed to fit me well so I thought that I would use the same site for the their full marathon suggestion.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km Training

In the end, each athlete is different. What might work for them, might not work for another. Nevertheless. I’m going to take this as a positive learning experience. After all, it’s my first marathon and I’ve a lot to learn, so I really don’t mind any critiques or suggestions and advice. 🙂

I guess at this point of time, I’d have to change my plan of action. While all the while my philosophy in doing races is to not be the last, I don’t think there should be any shame in to just want to complete the marathon.

According to the rule though, it is mandatory to do it in 7 hours. If I use the run and walk technique, that should be doable right? After all this guy did a marathon with hardly any training at all.

Hmm. #rinazdoes42km?

La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio – A hidden gem in Testaccio

Back in June 2010, Cart and I went to Testaccio to look for a new place to eat.

To me, Testaccio is an interesting area to explore, seeing the eccentric Piramide  monument for example. The area is also known by locals to be full of good restaurants, so we decided to come here to celebrate Cart’s birthday.

It was past noon. We managed to find a parking along an alley and started walking. But after walking for over an hour, we didn’t managed to find any restaurants along our path. At length, we gave up and headed back to the car. It was so disappointing.

rinaz.net La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio

Just as I was about to board the car however, I spotted a wall full of grape vines. It was so pretty that I started to walk towards it and that was when I spotted people sitting at their tables, having a meal. It was a restaurant! So we walked for an hour searching for a place to eat when it was right there where we originally started!

Of course we had to give this place a try.

It’s such a pretty place. When you enter, you walk in a small courtyard full of pretty green grapevines. I imagine that it would look especially gorgeous in Autumn when the vines will be full of hanging ripe grapes and when the leaves start to change its colour.

rinaz.net La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio

Inside, the restaurant looks rustic, with wooden furniture and barrels which is reminiscent of being in a countryside. It feels very cozy here.

The name of this place is La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio. It’s supposed to be fashioned as a sort of osteria. Traditionally, osteria is a place where you could find local  specialities at a cheap price, as it was meant for the working class. You could even bring your own wine and meat for them to cook. You won’t be able to do that here however, as it’s hard to find a true osteria in this present time.

rinaz.net La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio

Nevertheless, after having our first meal here, Cart and I enjoyed ourselves so much that we come back when we can and through the years we find ourselves recommending and bringing our visiting friends here.

La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio serves Roman styled dishes and uses ingredients found in the area, such as Roman artichokes and Pecorino cheese. Depending on when you go, the menu changes accordingly to the season and what might make foodies happy is that the restaurant supports ‘Slow Food‘.

As you sit down waiting for your meal to arrive, there will always be a paperbag full of pizza bianca meant as an accompaniment but you can’t help to breathe in the aroma and munch on the freshly made, crunchy, chewy, lightly salted bread.

Here are some of the food that we had :

For appetisers, I really enjoyed eating these deep fried pizza. Generously sprinkled with parmigiano cheese, it’s sinfully succulent.

These are the deep fried mozzarella balls – fresh, soft and chewy.

Bruschetta with tropea onions with balsamic vinegar. This was surprisingly fresh tasting and extremely delicious.

For the first course, or primo :

There is Tonarelli with mussels with Perocino cheese sprinkled on top. I was surprised at the mix of cheese with seafood, but the salty pecorino cheese worked well.

While Cart had Fettucine alla Sorrentina and you could taste the fresh basil and can tell that the pasta is hand made.

The pasta with Cicoria and Pecorino is one of Cart’s favourite dish here and he’d always order this whenever he can.

The pasta with asparagus tips and pomodorini was so delicious.

For the second dish, or secondo would features meat and seafood.

Personally I like their calamari, even though it’s not typically a Roman dish.

There were meatballs the size of your fist.

And this was another dish of the day, the orata fish with artichokes on top. I remember that this was a delight to eat.

After your primo and secondo, and you still have room for dessert :

There is the mint semi freddo

Crostata ricotta e visciola, which is a kind of pie with wild cherries inside. Cart absolutely loves this and would always get this for himself.

Or if you can’t decide, you could have the waiter bring small pieces of all their cakes.

As for me, the dessert that I adore here is their gelato covered in chocolate. Inside each of these treats are different flavours – vanilla, coffee, hazelnut and coconut. It’s such a treat and a great ending to a lovely meal.

rinaz.net La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio

I really like La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio and sometimes I wonder what would happen if I didn’t notice the green grape vines. We probably would have never discovered this place. It’s surprising how getting lost can bring you to a hidden treasure.

How Valentine’s day started

There is a church near the rose garden in Circo Massimo called the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. This church is probably most famous for its  bocca della verità exhibit, and you’d always see a long queue of tourists waiting to take a picture with it.

rinaz.net

However, did you know that the relics of San Valentino rests here?

While Valentine’s day is now commonly associated with roses and chocolates, Saint Valentine was an actual person – a priest who lived during the Roman Empire.

At the time, the emperor Emperor Claudius II did not allow soldiers to get married as he perceived that single soldiers fought better than those married, for fighting in the impending war.

However San Valentino who believed that marriage was a sacrament, took pity of them, and married them in secret. Eventually he was found out, imprisoned and was finally beheaded on the 14th February.

Such a tragic end.

rinaz.net San Valentino, Rome

I visited the Santa Maria in Cosmedin last Friday expecting to see a crowd of people paying their respects and laying flowers to the martyr. While there were a lot of people queuing for the bocca della verità as usual, to my surprise, I didn’t see a lot of people at San Valentino’s relic. Most to most, the visitors gave a glance, took a quick snap and walked off.

rinaz.net San Valentino, Rome

Even though I don’t celebrate Valentine’s day, I was quite taken aback by the nonchalance. Seems quite strange to me especially on such a popular day.

Week 11 fail

I was supposed to do 27 km yesterday for my long distance run. After going successfully at 26 km the past two weekends, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km Training

So I ran my usual path around Eur. Depending on where you go, going around this route would give you a good 15 – 20 km. I like going around this area as it’s normally not that many people around and there is a lake there which makes you feel tranquil as you go past fellow joggers.

rinaz.net

Unlike the previous weeks since starting on my training, this time round it was full of people celebrating the carnevale – you’d see lots of young children wearing costumes, accompanied with their parents. There were so many of them and it started to get bothersome, especially with the number of kids scampering around, not looking where they were going.

Rinaz at Eur Laghetto, Rome, Italy

Thinking quickly, I made a detour to the church nearby where the road was practically empty apart from the lone jogger or two.

Despite my feet feeling their usual pins and needles, I was feeling good. Moreover seeing that I was on a slow but steady pace made me feel extremely motivated. I even had an inner conversation with myself :

“Marina! You just did 10 km! Lets do another 10 km!”

“Oh wow! You just hit 20 km! Just 7 km more! You can do it!

As tired as I was, I was feeling really proud of myself especially when I think back about my half marathon training. But as soon as I hit 23 km, I suddenly felt a strong muscle pull in my soleus. Huh? Why?

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

It was so painful that I just couldn’t continue any more and had leave my goal premature. I even felt the sprain while hobbling to the main road where luckily Cart happened to be waiting nearby in his car and convinced me to stop and drove us home.

I felt so disappointed. It was only 4 km more. I was doing so good. Why is my body rebelling?

rinaz cry

As soon as we reached home, I couldn’t even do my after running stretches. It was too uncomfortable. And all throughout the evening, I felt like an invalid – I couldn’t walk around without needing support. Not fun at all!

So all I could do was to try to ease the pain by puting an ice pack around my calf and then use a muscle rub some hours after that and went to bed with my compression socks on.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km arnica gel forte sella

At this point of writing, my leg is feeling much better and I can walk properly now, although the pulled feeling is still there but I think it will ease completely within the day.

Nevertheless, this experience is rather disconcerting and Cart and I were hypothesising about what I did differently this time round :

  • I didn’t wear my compression socks while running.
  • I tried to go catch up at the traffic light by going slightly faster rather than running on the spot.

While I’m not that convinced that these changes made that much difference, now that I’m so deep in my training, I don’t want to take any more risks and instead I’ll take it as a learning experience.

Rather than feeling demoralised, all the more I feel like this is a challenge that I need to overcome. We’ve come so far and I really want to fight for this!

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

Sidenote : My next long run seems to coincide with a Duathlon event and it seems that part of their path is my usual jogging route. This could be a good thing. If they don’t block it off to non competitors, I could use it to my advantage. On the other hand, Cart can’t drive here in case something happens. We’ll see.

Massimo Ranieri – an Italian heart throb

I was at my inlaws place where we happened to watch a show called Sogno e son desto.

Massimo Ranieri @rinaz.net

Normally, I don’t enjoy watching talent shows on Italian public station, Rai as they tend to talk too much and sing too little. But watching the show, I was transfixed at the singer – for an older man, he has a lot of stamina to host and sing non stop for the entire show. I didn’t even see him pause for a drink! I would have been very thirsty and to me, that was impressive.

I was told that his name is Massimo Ranieri. Born in Naples, he started performing at a very young age, but he only became extremely popular in the late 60s when he became a teen idol.

Curious, I looked online to see what he looked like when he was younger.

Massimo Ranieri @rinaz.net

Ooh! What a cute boy! He reminds me a of a young Michael J Fox during his Back to the Future days. and I can understand why girls would go gaga over him back then.

Massimo Ranieri @rinaz.net

In the video below, he is performing a song called Rose Rosse (Roses Red) and you’ll probably hear girls screaming in the background.

I also like the songs Vent’Anni, Lacrime Napulitane and Adagio Veneziano among others.

Listening to his songs,  you can’t deny that he is very talented. He’s not just a pretty face, but he is a very good singer with a powerful voice, A powerful combination.

Massimo Ranieri @rinaz.net

If I were an Italian teenage girl back then, I’m not sure if I would go crazy over him. I didn’t get caught in the hype of 90s boybands. But one thing I’m quite sure of, is that at least one my girlfriends would probably be gushing about him non stop!

Sometimes I think I suck at this marathon thing

It’s now 10 weeks since I first started on my #rinazdoes42km training, and already I see changes in myself but I’m not entirely convinced that it’s for the best.

  1.  My pace has slowed down significantly

I used to be able to run around 7 minutes a kilometre, sometimes even faster than that. Nowadays however, I’d be lucky if I could go at a constant 8 minutes. I’m so slow! I can’t even sprint any more. And it can get quite demoralising.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

On the other hand, my stamina has increased dramatically. True, I take a longer time to run now, but I am always amazed each week through my training that I have the strength go the distance. And true, it’s not easy – I still feel pins and needles at the sole of my feet after each long run. But I am surprised at how I still feel fine. I expected that my heart would pound madly, and I’d wheezing for air and be crying from all the pain.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km Training

Every morning when I wake up the next day, I am surprised that I’m still alive. I guess that gives me a little bit of courage that I can still carry on with my training.

2. I found out that I’ve lost the ability to jump

As I’m training with minimalist shoes, it’s important to strengthen the calves and ankles and one recommended way of doing that is by doing jump rope.

Nowadays however, as hard as I try, I am unable to launch myself off the floor. Which is a disconcerting feeling, as I used to be good at zeropoint. But it seems that it’s common for long distance runners to lose this ability as their muscles adapt to endure long distance running.

Beautiful Bintan Lagoon Beach

Nope. I can’t do this any more.

I never really thought about it before, but I think jumping is an important ability to have in daily life. Sometimes you need that burst of energy to avoid danger like fast passing cars, or unfriendly dogs, which is common where I am. Thus, I’d hate to completely lose this useful ability.

One the other hand :

3. I feel physically stronger

There are days when I feel like I’m running out of steam when I jog. And I’d be complaining that I feel tired, or moan about having pins and needles on my feet after a long run. Interestingly though, my recuperation time seems to be faster and by the next day I’m usually almost back to normal.

I guess I don’t need Wolverine’s healing ability. For now at least 😛

Physically I think I look pretty much the same. It’s not like I suddenly developed a six pack past these 10 weeks, nor does anything impressive happens when I flex my arm. My weight has been pretty much the same too since the beginning of the training.

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

However, I can see that my calf muscles look more developed now. And my glutes look much firmer thanks to the exercises that I do. I can even twerk my jelly! (No. I will not show you) Although, I doubt I will ever be as good as this lady.

So for the past two weekends, I had to do 26 km, which is quite a significant jump from 22 km, so it’s quite daunting to me. Prior to that, I was talking to Cart about it :

Cart : How many kilometres do you have to do this Sunday?

Me : 26 kms.

Cart : Oh! You are so brave.

Me : No! I am not! In fact, I’m so scared! That’s why I really wish that you’d accompany me in case something happens to me.

Cart would usually decline, saying that he has a hernia issue which he doesn’t want to aggravate. To my surprise he finally agreed to accompany me in my long run. But its not like how you think :

He didn’t run with me, because of obvious back issues. Not with a bicycle either, as he doesn’t want to risk falling off. Not even with a motorcycle, for the same reason as the previous.

He accompanied me with a car!?

rinaz.net #rinazdoes42km

I … I have no words. On the other hand, with Cart accompanying me, I feel a morale boost in knowing that I can count on him in case something bad happens to me. And I feel very appreciative that he supports me in my time of need.

I’m still feeling motivated, and surprisingly still feel good. I’ve run 334 km in total so far since starting on my training and it’s just 3 more long runs before tapering and then just a short 2 more weeks before the actual #rinazdoes42km!

I think I just might be able to do this!

Your phone operator might be doing dirty tricks on you

In Italy, there are a number of mobile phone operators. Some of the famous ones are Wind, TIM and Vodafone.

I use my phone more for social media and internet, so Tre seemed to fit me the best with their  prepaid internet plan at 3GB at 5 euro a month. I’d usually top up with 10 euro a month so the rest would be more than sufficient for making phone calls.

Rinaz new italian sim card

Depending on some places, sometimes it’s hard to get a good reception, but most of the times it’s been satisfactory. The annoying part is, sometimes I get calls from the operator asking me to upgrade to a new plan, to which I’d usually answer, I’m not interested in. And sometimes I get promotional advertisement SMSes, but I get that with the operators in Singapore too, so I guess that’s common.

Anyway, last Saturday, first February, I recharged my phone with 10 euro as usual. But come Monday, I had a rude shock when I received an SMS notifying that I only had 50 cents left and that I should top up soon. Huh? How was that possible?

So I logged on the customer service website and looked through my history. Apparently, 7 euro was used to purchase a service called gocinema. But I don’t remember ever giving authorisation to make this purchase.

Gocinema might seem like a good deal, you could go to any cinema in Italy and watch any movies you like from Monday to Friday with a partner. BUT I didn’t ask for it. I didn’t want it in the first place.

Later on, doing some research online, I found out that phone operators in Italy has a premium SMS service that once you receive it, it might automatically open a website, which in turn allows the operator to claim that you’ve given them permission to sign up for additional services.

I’m extremely unhappy about this. To me, this is a dirty trick to cheating the customers into paying more without them even knowing it. Shame on you!

In the meanwhile, a way to protect yourself is to ignore all SMSes from your operator, activate barring SMS and block all services from Postemobile.

An American girl in Italy

While watching Ballaro last evening, I saw an interesting illustration used as background image :

rinaz.net Ballaro American Girl Walking In Italy

As soon as I saw that, I excitedly told Cartcart, “Hey! I know that picture! That’s a homage to a famous photo. Here, let me show you!

rinaz.net Ballaro American Girl Walking In Italy

An American girl in Italy is a photo taken by photographer, Ruth Orkin in the year 1951. This photo is one of her most memorable one as the subject, a lone woman walks down the streets of Florence with men leering and staring at her – one of them even grabbing his jewels.

That would have been a harrowing experience for any woman walking alone, but the odd thing, when interviewed, Ninalee Craig, the woman in the picture insists that, “It’s not a symbol of harassment. It’s a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time!

My uncle passed away recently. It was so sudden that it was a terrible shock to me. I always remember him as a kind and friendly person. Each time when us relatives would visit his house, he’d be busy cooking something and insist that we have a meal together and we’ll update each other about what’s going on with our lives.

It sucks so much to know the passing of someone that we love and I can only imagine what my cousins and aunt are going through right now. And frankly, this is one of my biggest fears I have living so far away from my family.

Rain rain go away …

For almost the entirety of last week, there was continuous rain, and some parts of Rome was badly hit with flood to the point that some subway stations are closed due to the ponding .

rinaz.net Flooding in Rome

It was quite scary seeing the level of water rise at the Isola Tiberina and Ponte Milvio. Even the Colosseo wasn’t spared either.

Luckily for Cart and I, the flood didn’t hit us as bad as how it was about two years ago. Nevertheless, it was so demoralizing seeing all the rain and going out of the house felt eerie, especially after dusk but all the street-lights were not working.

Apart from the lights emanating from cars, the road was completely dark. It was as if a zombie apocalypse was going on. I had to drive slower than usual as some of the puddles on the road were so deep that my tyres were almost submerged while I was driving.

I just cross my fingers that the flooding situation goes better soon.
