Inaugural reception for Singaporeans living in Italy

I was invited to an inaugural reception yesterday evening, among  a number of other Singaporeans, living in Italy.

It was hosted by Ambassador Loo Choon Yong (I first met him in 2009) to introduce the newly appointed Consul-General, Dr Nicolo’ Marzotto.

By the way, while there isn’t a Singaporean embassy, (as the Singaporean community living in Italy isn’t that large) there is a consulate where you could do bureaucratic matters such as passport matters and overseas voting.

The reception was held at at Il Palazzetto, which is located near Piazza di Spagna.

In all honesty, I felt uncomfortable there in the beginning as it was a very formal event (we were all in lounge suits) and I was surrounded by people of a different league than I am so I felt really awkward and flustered and didn’t know what to say. I was regretting in coming and told Cart that I really wanted to go back home.

But I’m glad that I stuck around longer as I got to meet a number of really friendly Singaporeans there. Such as Elizabeth, a passionate fashion student who came all the way from Firenze to attend this event, as well as Sindy, who has lived in Rome for only a few months and seems to be adjusting well here.

There were also a number of other interesting Singaporeans there whom I really enjoyed chatting with, but I didn’t take much pictures with, as the lighting was dark. There was one lady that has lived in Rome for the past 7 years but this was the first time that she’s met any other Singaporeans!

As the event drawed to a close, we exchanged contacts with each other before we left (I gave out my card, as usual hehe) to keep in touch.

Some of us adjourned later to a restaurant nearby called La Rampa which by the way, I think is the prettiest restaurant that I’ve ever been in, in Rome.

I loved being here. It was decorated to look as if we were outdoors in a piazza, so where we were sitting, there were flowers and vines on top of us and all around the walls there were faux windows and steps and doors. It was so charming.

With what I’ve tasted though, I’m not such a big fan of the food here and I think that there are better food in Rome.

My gnochetti alla sorrentina wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything to shout about.

Cart’s pasta with pesto was bitter, probably because they mixed the branch into the mixture instead of just the leaves. Speaking of which, Eu Chai found an interesting ingredient in a pesto he bought in Singapore.

I’m not an expert on Sachertorte, but I didn’t enjoy eating this. Look at the cake, it’s not at all dense and you could easily squash it to 1/4 of the size.

My biggest disappointment was in the tiramisu which was highly recommended on Tripadvisor and Foursquare. Just no! I didn’t like this at all! What happened? Was the chef in a bad mood?

Nevertheless, what more than made up for the lacklustre food was the wonderful company that I was with. I spent most of the evening chatting with Nicolette, who’s been living in Rome for about twenty years and she’s one the loveliest person I know. She has this calm and regal demeanour that I admire and wish I could emulate 🙂

And next to her, the blurry guy is Eu Chai, who is such a fascinating person to talk to. He has loads of stories and interesting experiences and isn’t afraid to give his unbiased opinion about what he thinks on something. By the way, he’s a tour agent so if there are anyone who wants to hire him, please contact him 🙂

There was also the charming Seema who is always interesting to talk to (I didn’t get to talk much to her as she was sitting at the other corner of the table) and new friends Alex, Sam and Dario.

(See how very pretty La Rampa is?)

I feel very comfortable talking to them and feel blessed to have met and know these lovely people. In the end, I had a pleasant evening after all 🙂

Sidenote : By the way, I also have to add how pleasantly surprised I was when so many came up to me, telling me that the recognize me from my blog and how useful Marina’s Bloggariffic has been for them. Feels so nice to be appreciated! I felt like doing cartwheels!

Another sidenote : Something interesting I found out from the meet yesterday is that new immigrants are required to fulfill points in a two year period before they are given a residence permit.

To me, sleeping is a more productive way to spend time rather than being upset about the weather 😛

Speaking of being productive, I tried to start on designing some postcards. Kicked by this guilty feeling that I’ve received so many postcards from friends all around the world. I should have sent them some a long time ago. I’m so ashamed of myself. It’s just that Italian postal offices are so daunting …

Anyway! I have loads of photography paper I got bundled when I buy my ink cartridges, so I decided to experiment to see how it looked like printed out.

rinaz.net

The first one looks good, the second one too. But by the time the third one came out, it looked really bad. I think I like green too much :p

I’m tempted to just have it printed in bulk, but the company I found allows you to print a minimum amount of 500. Not sure if I want to do that, especially if it’s just for one design. Wouldn’t be so bad if I could have 100 x 5 different designs.

By the way, while the weather in Rome is being bad these days, it’s not as bad as what happened in Sardegna (and of course what happened in the Philippines) 🙁

My handsome friend on the telley

So I was channel surfing on the telley late last night and stumbled on this channel where it happened to be that they were doing a rather seedy advertisement. But it’s nothing out of the ordinary by the way, as nudity is common on Italian tv during late nights.

(And no, I’m not posting any of those sort of pictures in my blog)

I was just about to change the channel when I saw this face :

rinaz.net

He looks very familiar …

It’s when he gave this big smile was when I realised who he was!

Why it’s our dear friend from Mondo Convenienza! Awww! He’s so famous now! I wonder where we’ll spot him in next? 🙂

Changing seasons

It’s starting to finally look like Autumn where I am. As sad as I am, with the thought that Summer is finally gone, it’s still lovely to see the Autumn scenery. The leaves on the trees are changing it’s colour to reds and oranges and yellows. It’s kind of romantic.

rinaz.net autumn

As I walk around the neighbourhood, people are starting to go around wearing heavier coats. Some are even wearing furry little hats although I think that it’s still not that cold yet (Which is strange, coming from me, a girl who grew up in the tropics)

If you are here in Rome during these times, in the markets, you’d see loads of Autumn fruits and vegetables around – like chestnuts, pumpkins, cabbages, pears … all wonderful things to eat.

rinaz.net autumn

Which reminds me, we should start roasting chestnuts soon! And it’s time to make pumpkin pie again!

Right now I’m wearing my brown pile sweater underneath my trusty blue thermal jacket – my summer clothes already tucked away deep in the cupboard long ago, in the cambio stagione routine.

With the drop in temperature, we finally had our heaters turned on a few days ago. As you know, we had to have it checked first before it gets the green light. It was the same boiler man that came over from the previous year. I don’t think he remembers me, as he asks me again if I were Filipina.

As he did his job, we started chatting (or rather, I let him talk) and offered him a slice of banana bread. Somehow along the way, somehow we talked about jobs, about how his wife is a lawyer and then he asked me what I did. “Insegno inglese al domicilio” I replied and he did something that was quite unexpected, he scribbled Cart’s number (which was on the libretto) on a piece of paper and said, “Well, just in case my kids need an English teacher“.

That was kind of nice, even if I don’t think that anything will come out of it.

With the drop in temperature, I find myself using the car more frequently. As convenient and economical it is using the scooter, during the colder temperatures, it can be extremely uncomfortable and frostbites are a real risk.  I got really sick having to commute to work and back using the scooter throughout the winter and would rather spend a bit more on fuel and whatnots than having to go through that again.

stickrinaz and stickcart

Speaking of which, it’s been over a year and a half since getting my car. By now, I should have long taken off the P plate. The irony is though, instead of being more confident, I still get mini panic attacks when I’m on the road sometimes – like imagining that someone would run across the street as I’m driving by, which is probably a non issue as that’s something only an insane person would do.

In any case, I’m not sure what else I can update you with, so I’ll just end abruptly here.

Hypnotised by peppa pig

Peppa Pig is a cartoon series that runs for about 5 minutes each episode, starring a pig called Peppa, her little brother George and their mum and dad. In Italy you could watch it on Sky Disney Channel Junior or Rai Yoyo. Although it originated from UK, it’s very popular in Italy – where ever you go, you can’t escape them – you could find them in supermarkets, toy shops, bookshops – EVERYWHERE!

I didn’t get the hype until I finally caught a couple of episodes … and now I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’m quite hypnotised by Peppa Pig. Let me explain to to you why :

1. The catchy opening music

The “Doot! Doot doot doot doot!” is extremely catchy and repeated so much that I could memorize by heart “Io sono Peppa Pig (oink) e questo e’ mio fratellino George (oink) Lei e’ Mamma Pig  (oink) e lui e’ Papa’ Pig (OINK!)

Peppa Pig

(Kind of reminds of me when I was younger and my siblings would drag me to watch The Teletubbies and I can recognize all the freaking characters)

I have to say though, that the repetitive music is quite hypnotic. It’s understandable how easily people could get brainwashed by something.

2. Charming artwork

Although to some, the drawings look simplistic, I love how clean the artwork looks like and especially the choice of colours used in the animation. They are so cheery and bright. I love looking at them.

Peppa Pig

Although I have to mention about how the characters are drawn. You notice that all their faces are drawn sideways but their eyes are always two.

Perhaps I might be a little perverse, but the lead characters, especially Daddy Pig’s head look like uh … man bits. I have a theory about that making them more memorable and leaving a psychological imprint.

3. It’s relaxing

I like hearing the voice of the narrator, and of the characters talking and when they giggle. I even find it amusing when George cries (and he cries often). I find it really tranquil and relaxing and I forget to be angry :p

Peppa Pig

4. Hearing Italian grammar and vocabulary

Impressively for a kid’s show, there are a number of words that I’ve never heard before like – scorciatoia (shortcut) and pozzanghera (puddle) and I am amazed at the level of grammar that they include like congiuntivo which can be challenging to learn even for Native Italians.

Peppa Pig

Peppa Pig does have her own controversies, such as it reportedly making it children behave worse or it being a bad influence. Personally, I think that all kids are naturally kids and how they behave is largely due to their environment.

Nevertheless, watching Peppa Pig, makes me wish sometimes that I could have the same level of popularity with my own toons. I enjoy drawing and I’d like to start with merchandising at least but the trouble is, I just have no idea where to start!

A little guest at our place last night

We don’t  celebrate Halloween, but regardless, Cartcart suddenly was in the mood to find a pumpkin to carve (A spontaneity that I’ve never seen in him before)

rinaz.net

He scooped out the flesh, put in some candles and switched off the lights. And we looked at the glowing pumpkin and breathed in the smell of roasted pumpkin.

rinaz.net

Don’t worry about the pumpkin flesh, it wasn’t for naught! Risotto alla zucca for dinner!

And now our little friend sits happily terrorizing the denizens of our fridge.
