The Vespa Club roadtrip to Malacca

Monday, June 4th, 2007

My trip to Malacca was fantastic! Yesterday was the first time that I was riding out of Singapore and it was such a memorable experience. I would love for to do it again! :)

Welcome to Malacca

The Vespa Club, an enthusiast group which I joined last year organized an outing to Malacca last Sunday. As I’ve always wanted to experience riding overseas, I jumped immediately when I knew about it. Malaysia was a great place to start because of its vast natural terrain, picturesque sights as well as wonderful food along the way.

As I slept at about 3am the previous night, I woke up groggy when the alarm clock rang at 5.30am. I was supposed to meet the gang at 6.30am and was still deciding whether to go or no. At length I dragged myself out of bed and stuffed my passport and other necessary items and had a quick shower.

I reached the Jurong Bird park which was the designated meet-up point and saw that the others were there already. I was late! I tried to bribe everyone with the chocolates that I bought from the chocolate factory last friday.

Kennyatemyburger and Moon_star peeking

Moon_star, she’s in the pink scooter, lead us to the Tuas second link immigration check point where we had our passports checked and paid S$0.60 using our cash card for our scooters to cross over. It was another RM$1.30 for the Malaysian vehicle toll later.

After the check, I took in the beautiful sights as we crossed the bridge connecting Singapore and Malaysia. It was gorgeous to see the rising sun coming out from the sea and into the blue skies. At times like these, I wished I had a helmet camera. I would love to show you the lovely sights I saw while on the road.

We stopped by Gelang Patah to meet up with the rest of the gang and to have our breakfast together. In Malay, Gelang Patah translates to Broken Bracelet. But as to why the area was named as such is a mystery to me. I quickly exchanged my Singapore money to Malaysian money (1 SGD = 2.20 RM) and then I had Nasi Lemak and Teh Halia! Yum!

Roadster briefing after breakfast

After our breakfast, Roadster, who will be leading the group later on, briefed to us on the road that we will be travelling as well as cautioned us that because the travel would be long and monotonous, to try to keep ourselves awake and entertained.

But first, we pumped petrol at the petronas petrol kiosk that was nearby. There is no Premium, 98 or 95 (and other different types of petrol). Here there was only two choices of oil. Petrol or diesel. I stared at the pump, not accustomed to how it works.

Its very different here. The meter will not reset till the person has paid for his oil at the counter. So if the person takes his time, or worse, drive away without paying, the next person will have to wait a very long time. After a while, the meter reset and I filled my tank. I paid about ten ringgit for the fill. Cool!

And that we started our journey. It was a very long ride. I kept myself entertained by listening to my mp3 player and taking in the view of the plantations. There was no commercial or housing buildings anywhere along the highway. It was only trees everywhere. We stopped only for some of us to refuel and for all of us to stretch our legs.

Here is a video of us at one of our stops :

But it was really fun for me to ride in a procession with the vesporeans. We must have been a sight to behold with our colourful and eye catching scooter. Everywhere we go, there will be someone waving and shouting, “Vespa! Vespa!” at us. I saw that there were also other motorcycle group along the road. Even they were waving and giving us the thumbs up. I feel happy and proud.

Man taking pictures of our Vespas

After about 3 hours, we finally reached Malacca! It was already noon so it was hot hot hot! The gang went to have lunch at the famous Chicken Rice Ball restaurant. But as the place wasnt halal, I didnt eat there. Roadster was really nice to accompany me for lunch as we searched for a suitable place to eat.

Selvam Indian Restaurant with yummy biryani

We stumbled upon an indian restaurant and feasted on the yummilicious chicken biryani. Even though I wasnt so hungry, I find myself polishing off the rice. It was so good!

After lunch, Roadster wanted to go shopping. So I took the chance to roam around by myself and take pictures. As Malacca was formerly colonised by the Dutch and the portuguese, there are a number of landmarks here which had a European look.

Stadhuys building in Malacca

This is the Stadhuys building. Formerly a residence of the Dutch Governor and his deputy. Now it is converted into a museum.

Church in Malacca

A gothic church was built by the French priest.

Mana Laksa?

The colourful streets itself too made me feel like I was walking back in time. There are loads of antique things and sights.

Wooden Clogs

Like these clogs. These shoes are memorable as they have a very loud “click clock” sound as you walk around in these. But they can hardly be found in Singapore anymore.

Man handmaking a sweet

This man here is doing a handmade sweet. He’d chisel off the hard candy made of sugar. You can hear him when he works and the loud sound of the clinking will attract many children.

Man making a cold dessert - cendol

While walking, I chanced upon a chendol shop! I love chendol! These cool dessert will surely cool you down in the warm weather. I love looking at how the dessert is prepared. First the man will take a block of ice and puts it in the machine. The ice is then shaved into a container which is then layered with coconut milk, gula melaka, red bean and jelly. Yum!

The Malaccan river

There is a river down the path that I was walking at and I admired the view. Just as I was daydreaming at how nice it would be to take a dip on this hot day. I saw something interesting …

Huge Lizard

Err … I think I’d rather not have the dip.

Later on we grouped back together and rode around the Malaccan town and did a quick bout of shopping and then it was time to head back.

The way back home is easily one of the most stressful riding experience that I’ve ever had. Somewhere along the middle of the journey, traffic got congested and got heavier as we went along. And then the skies got darker and angrier and the rain poured down.

I always get nervous at times like these. Visibility is low and tempers are high. Accidents always happen on the roads when there’s a heavy downpour. And true enough, there were at least 3 accidents which I saw along the way home.

Every motorist wanted to go back home so much so that they squeezed through everywhere! Even the cars and busses cut into the shoulder lane!

This journey was very physically challenging indeed. My back and legs felt sore from all the riding. It was already nightfall and the only illumination was from our vehicles. I definitely wouldnt want to be stuck here alone!

I was wet, cold, tired and miserable. My mind started to play tricks on me. I could hear loud cheers and I looked around me to see where the sound came from. Could it be from the plantations? Could it be a cult? I shouldnt have watched the 100 scariest movie scenes the night before.

Then I realised that it was the tour bus-coach in front of me which was playing a movie. The cheering scenes emanated through the glass panels. Bah!

After what seemed to be forever, I was really grateful for the quick stops at the R&R along the way so that I could get warmed up again. A warm drink and a stretch of the legs and we were off. An hour later, we were back in Gelang Patah again for our final stop and dinner.

List of burger patties in Malaysia

I couldnt decide on what to eat. In the end, I decided to have a burger. Cerealz seemed shocked when I translated the words of the banner at the burger stall :

Arnab = Rabbit
Kasawari = Ostrich
Rusa = Deer

How on earth did the stall owners able to buy Ostrich and Deer meat anyway? But I tried the rabbit burger just to see how it tasted like. Interestingly enough, it tasted like chicken. Maybe they were all chicken meat … hehehe.

After dinner, we pumped petrol for the final time and then headed back to the customs then we said our goodbyes to each other. By the time I reached home, the first thing I did was to head to the bathroom to get out of my dirty and wet clothes and have a nice warm shower and then collapsed in bed and snoozed immediately after that. I was that tired!

I realise that I didnt buy much things in Malacca. I still had a little souvenir though.

Got a sunburt!

Wow, what a tan! Hehehe. But now all my limbs feel stiff and my skin feels like a radiation effect. I’m sunburnt! Argh!

A new addition to the two wheeler family

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

The brother seems to be feeling the urge to ride and has actually bought for himself a Bajaj Pulsar.

Bajaj Pulsar
The Bajaj Pulsar

He initially contemplated on getting a Vespa LX 150, but finally had his heart set on the Bajaj after realising that the petrol consumption mileage was better and the tank capacity was higher.

We went to one motorcycle shop on evening. And while he was talking to the salesman, I went off to admire this cutie.

Yamaha Fino Scooter
The Yamaha Fino

Isnt it adorable? This is the Yamaha Fino. I like the shape and the look of this scooter. It looks so retro. And it is mini enough for any woman to ride comfortably. What’s cute about it is that there is a side pocket in the front to put items like water bottles.

This particular green and white limited edition which we saw at Universal Motors is going for about $5k on the road.

But as adorable as it is, the one thing that didnt make it perfect was that the Fino had very little storage. I cant even stuff my handbag in there, much less with things like laptops or the SLR Camera bag.

My Vespa GT200 is still the best. Hehehe!

I think I need a new picture of baby and me

Anyways, the brother will be getting his Bajaj this evening and he’s letting me be the subrider. Coolness! I cant wait to try riding on that.

And speaking of Vespas, the Vespa Club is having a 1 Day Trip to Malacca, Malaysia this Sunday. If you have a Vespa and is free this sunday, do join us. It’ll be fun! :)

Update : Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I finally saw the sunflower biker along the AYE expressway on my way to night class. Wanted to wave hello to him but he rode away so fast.

Ack! Another meme!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

I am really not fond of doing memes.

I got tagged by Sha, and then Eastcoastlife and most recently, Clappingtree to do a meme. But I guess I’ll do this just one more time, just cause I think they are all cool people.

Finish this sentence :

I love
my scooter

I feel
happy when I am on my scooter.

I need
my scooter

Idiosyncracies about me :

1. Before I start my journey, I pat my scooter and ask if it is ready.

1. During my journeys, I sing on my scooter

2. After every trip, I’d say goodnight to my scooter

Goals before I die:

1. Persuade cartcart to learn to ride a scooter

2. Have my future kids to learn to ride a scooter

3. Have everyone else to learn to ride a scooter

And I tag

  1. No one
  2. Mei yo de ren
  3. Tiada sesiapa orang
  4. Nessuna persona
  5. Karappam Pochi

There I’ve done a meme, happy? :P

How to renew your road tax

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Its been some months since I’ve been riding my vespa and I think that I’m getting better at riding. Everyday is an adventure, just exploring, travelling and feeling of the wind in my face. I love it!

Recently, I’ve received a notification from the Land Transport Authority to renew my road tax. This task wasnt as difficult as I thought it would be – after consulting with the Vespa Club forum, I had a better idea of how to do it.

1. Send your vehicle for a full check up

Tong Aik

I sent my scooter in to Tong Aik after being recommended by a colleague. I like Tong Aik as they specialised in Vespas and they know what they are doing. After going to a mechanic that actually damaged my baby, I became extremely wary.

But Tong Aik was professional, friendly and the prices are quite reasonable. I definitely recommend them for Vespa owners.

2. Head for your nearest Vehicle Inspection Center

Viacom at Bukit Batok

Because I live in the west, I chose to go to Vicom Bukit Batok for my vehicle inspection. It was just a couple of minutes away from my workplace.

You’ll need to position your motorcyle along a line. There will be a person examining the alignment, the tyres, breaks, lights among other things. The entire check doesnt take more than 10 minutes. Once the inspection is passed, he’ll hand you a certificate. This will be used in conjunction for the road tax.

3. Renew vehicle insurance

It is a legal requirement to have insurance when owning a vehicle. I renewed both my insurance and road tax at Asphoon, where I purchased my scooter. I handed my road tax disc as well as the certificate from the vehicle inspection.

A sample of an unstamped road tax disc

A couple of days later, you’ll get your new insurance as well as a stamped road tax disc to attach in your vehicle.

Whee!

And now enjoy riding till the next year! Beep beep! :)

my scooter almost exploded (but luckily for me, it didnt)

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

After about two weeks after the accident, I got a call from the mechanic telling me that it was ready for collection. I headed to the workshop. The man who knocked me down was there too.

I was civil, but I didnt talk much to him. I wasnt being rude. But I was ready to close the chapter and put it behind me.

After an examination on the scooter, I sat on my scooter and waved goodbye to him, thinking to myself, hoping that I’ll never have another accident again.

But as I rode back home, I can sense that something is not quite right with the scooter. Rather than that inviting feeling I get when riding my scooter, it just felt cold and lifeless.

Let the power of the cocoa coloured GT200 beckon you ...

The next morning, there was a very strong smell of petrol coming from the inside of the scooter. I was most concerned. Something is just not right.

Mr Singh, a colleague at the school that I was attached to noticed it too and adviced me to send it for servicing.

pic of the front counter of Tong Aik

Me : Funny thing is, I just went to the mechanic recently. But I want to send it to someone who specialises in Vespa. I tried to call Piaggio service center, but they only work on weekdays.

Mr Singh : Why dont you bring it to Tong Aik? They work on weekends too. I brought my scooter there for 20 years now. I really recommend it.

Me : But yours is a manual, Mr Singh. Mine is an automatic

Mr Singh : Not a problem. As long as its a Vespa, they can do it for you. Let me get you their contact.

I went there early in the morning to avoid the long waiting time. It was quite easy to get there. It was near Sim Lim Square, my favourite computer shop :P

It was such a curious place. I rode all the way to the fifth floor where their workshop was. I knew I was at the right place when I saw all sorts of scooters there. Vintage and new Vespas in all shapes and colours. As I admired the procession of scooters a man in blue overalls popped out of nowhere.

pic of a LX150 Tong Aik

man : Hi! How can I help you?

me : Hi, I’m looking for Mr Wee? My colleague, Mr Singh recommended me here for a servicing.

man : Thats me. Mr Singh? Oh yes, he worked for the police previously didnt he? What kind of service would you like for your scooter?

me: I’d like to have a full service on it please. Also, there is a strong petrol smell coming from inside. Can you check it for me?

man : No problem! Rest assured that I’ll personally check your scooter and repair what is needed.

After about 2 hours, I went back in the workshop area.

man : The belt and rollers need to be changed, they are worn out already. May I know where you did your servicing previously?

me: Whats wrong?

man : The mechanics there did not handle the tap properly and now its damaged. The oil was supposed to flow in 15 mins, but here, it took an hour.

me : Oh.

man : And you’ve got a good sense of smell there. Let me show you why you smelt the petrol smell.

Mr Wee opens up the cover and we both look at the engine. He revs up the throttle and to my horror, I saw petrol leaking out each time he revs it.

me : OH! MY! GOD!

man : The pipes are weak. It could have exploded but good thing that it didnt.

me : OH! MY! GOD!

man : You are a very very lucky woman.

me : *eyes boggles*

man : I need to examine your scooter some more. So sorry to keep you waiting. But I dont think I can finish it now. Can you pick it up on monday afternoon instead?

me : Yes, sounds good. Thanks for checking, and bye!

I think I’ll bring my baby to Tong Aik for servicing the next time, all the time.

My first road accident

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Bah of bahness.

I was riding to work as normal this morning. I saw a woman waving for a cab. The next thing I knew, a car suddenly cut directly in my way. No time to react. Breaking would be useless.

Bah of bahness

I fell down. Then I tried to push my scooter up, unsucessfully. I think I was in a daze and shock.

I heard someone chiding the driver. “Why did you do that!” “Sorry, blind spot” “You cannot say blind spot! Miss are you okay?”

I mumbled a “I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine

How can you say you are fine? Here is my contact. I saw the whole thing. I will be a witness

Anyway, to put a long story short, I’m not going to make a police report and charge him in court. But I’m definitely going to make him pay for my medical and full repairs to my scooter.

My baby is sick again :`(

Broken exhaust cover, Deep scratches of body and box. The m in the granturismo is gone. The crome line near the footrest damaged.

Bah. Two weeks without my ride. This is agony.
