My medical experience in Italy

Since I’m heading back to Singapore in mid December, I thought that I should take the opportunity to make use of my Singaporean subsidization and have a medical check up like dental. Besides, I’m way behind my recommended two times a year check up.

Hence, yesterday, I made an online appointment for a dental checkup and today, I got a reply that I was scheduled for the 1st December.

I wasn’t too surprised though, since my experience with the Singaporean public health services has always had a long waiting time. A month at the very least.

rinaz.net

How it works is like this, you do a walk in to any polyclinic nearest to you. After registration, you go to a consultation room and ask the doctor for a referral if you wanted to visit a specialist. And they’ll make the arrangements and give you a letter and about a month later, you’ll see the specialist.

Its quite a lengthy process. But its not too bad in the end as the fees including the medicine are subsidized, hence it was more affordable as compared to going to a private clinic.

But in anycase, speaking of medical services, I thought that I’d share with you my experience with the medical services here in Rome. Well, granted that it was just a one time experience, so I’m definitely not an expert at this. But despite the horror stories that I’ve heard online, my experience wasn’t all that bad.

Middle of last year, I had an irritant in my left eye. Initially I thought that it was a small grain of dust in my eye. So I beared the irritating feeling. But when the discomfort persisted for days and didn’t go away during the weekend, I got alarmed. Peering in the mirror, I found a white dot near the edge of the iris. Cart started to feel anxious and dragged me to visit a hospital.

I was surprised. Was there a working clinic during the weekend? Practically nothing is open during the weekend in Italy, especially towards the evening onwards. But Cart told me that there are hospitals that are open till late for emergency issues.

it was evening time when we reached the Ospedale Regionale Oftalmico. You take a number queue and sit in the waiting room for about 15 – 30 minutes. After which, you have a person check you and see how severe your ailment is. He also fills in the personal particulars and then gives you a new queue number.

rinaz.net

What was interesting is that the queue number is colour coded. Red for the highly serious cases, followed by yellow, then green and then white, which is the least serious and a longer waiting time.

And back to the waiting room we go.

Eventually, about an hour and several cups of coffee and hot chocolate later, we were finally examined by a doctor. He did a diagnostic, examining the eye under a light. And then a swab on my eye for a sample, dropped in an ointment and finally put a bandage and said that I had Corneal Abscess. Finally he gave us a list of medical prescription and asked me to come back for follow up checkup.

rinaz.net

By the time we left the hospital, it was already night time, but luckily there were still a few pharmacies which was open. (Pharmacies and clinics are strangely, not in the same building here) Cart went in and bought the prescribed medicines.

About a week later, I was back at the eye hospital, during the day this time, bringing with me the contact lenses that I was using the week that I had the eye irritant. After about an hour of waiting, we saw the doctor and he diagnosed from the swab that it was a germ in my eye, but because it was close to the cornea, it was harder for it to fade away as opposed to dirt going in the white part of the eye.

rinaz.net

In any case, I continued with the medication to which, in no time, I found out that I had an eerily fascinating large pupil, just like a cat’s eye at night. The bad side is that I was very photosensitive. Too much light made me feel extremely uncomfortable. But eventually the spot went away.

And some time later, we had the lab results from the doctor. My contact lenses were germ free hence it was still a mystery as to how I had the white dot.

But what is interesting that I’ve noticed is that apart from the medication, we didn’t have to pay at the time. And I’m not even an Italian. Cart tells me that, this is how it was practised in Europe – every person, regardless of their nationality gets a chance to be treated. It would be bad to turn away a non European sick person, who will in turn infect others.

I thought that, that was cool.

My top 5 Italian stereotypes

Initially when Sylvia suggested that I write about this topic, I thought that it would be simple seeing how there were so many famous Italian stereotypes. I mean, we’ve all heard about it. Italians are this and they are that …

But the more I thought about it, the harder it was to write because most of the stereotypes are based off the Italian-American community. And shows like Rocky, The Godfather, Saturday Night Fever, The Sopranos as well as Jersey Shore are definitely not helping.

rinaz.net

Even innocent games like Super Mario plays on the Italian stereotype. And interestingly enough, it orginated from Japan.

rinaz.net
It’s-a me! Mario!

But in any case, at the top of my head, I’ll try to recount a few popular misconceptions about Italians.

Myth 1 : All Italians have dark hair and olive skin

This is my Romualdo from the classic movie, “Cave of the Golden rose“. He’s very good looking isn’t he? He  I’ve put his picture here as he fits the description of a typical Italian.

rinaz.net

For a long time, I’ve the impression Italians typically have dark hair and tanned, olive skin. Hence, when I see natural red heads, sometimes I’d quip to Cartcart, “Is he Italian? He doesn’t seem Italian to me” and Cart would explain to me that since Italy is an amalgam of population, areas up north are closer to countries such as Switzerland and Austria and hence would have paler skin and lighter eyes and hair. While areas down south are closer to the Mediterranean, hence the darker skin and dark hair.

In fact, there is a whole melting pot going on in Italy since the 1930’s. Thanks to globalization there are many migrants settling down in Italy and starting their own family and children. Increasingly I’ve witnessed Black-Italians, Chinese-Italians, Arab-Italians, Filipina-Italians … the list goes on.

If blessed be that Cart and I would have kids of our own, we’d have a Matalian perhaps. Malay+Italian.

rinaz.net
Our baby according to Morphthing

Myth 2 : Spaghetti and meatballs

Looks good doesn’t it?

rinaz.net

But after living in Italy for the past one and a half year, I’ve yet to see it being served in any restaurants, trattoria or osteria. And Cart would passionately tell me that pasta and meatballs are two separate foods. The closest thing is probably the Pasta al ragú which uses grounded beef in tomato sauce, but never shaped as a meatball.

Speaking of which, I’ve yet to see any chicken being cooked in pasta. Nor Fetttucine Alfredo. And also peperoni means bell peppers in Italy not spicy cured sausage slices.

Myth 3 : Italian men are womanizers

Well, mostly this man who thinks that he is a stallion.

rinaz.net

Its true that Italians are very open in showing their affections. All the kissing and the hugging. There are times when I cant even get through a journey without at least seeing one public display of affection where the guy pulls the girl’s hand and kissing it, smooching the girl, hugging the girl and others.

And many a times if you are a woman and walking alone, a big chance you’ll have an Italian man flirting with you. They’ll back off respectfully though if you are not interested.

Myth 4 : Italian men has an unhealthy obsession with their mothers

There are a number of Mama’s boys in Italy and they are termed as, “Mammone”.

rinaz.net

There are a huge 80% of Italian men above 30 years old who still live with their parents. And while there are some people who might scoff and find the entire idea as unfathomable, to still have their mothers to wash and clean for them as well as the lack of privacy and independence, the biggest reasoning as to why Italians stick with their parents for so long is mainly because of how expensive housing are. Thus they’d need some time to save up.

This house alone which is not too far from where we live, costs at least 500k euro. That’s quite a lot of money for the regular person.

Myth 5 : All Italians ride gondola and sing O Sole Mio

rinaz.net

I was watching this interesting show about how Napolitana pizza is made. And towards the end of the show, I innocently asked Cartcart, “Why are they playing O Sole Mio? Isn’t it a Venezia song?”

Cart started to burst into peals of laughter. Several moments later when he’s calmed down, he explained to me.

Cart : You’ve fallen into the biggest Italian fallacy that when you sit in a gondola, the boatman will sing this song to you

Me : You mean, its not from Venezia?

Cart : Oh no! In fact the lyrics of the song is in Napoli accent! Haha!

Alright, so those were my top 5 Italian stereotypes. I’ll update this page if I can think of more. Do you know of any others? Do share

Like a car crash. But I cant take my eyes off

There is this free to air channel here in Italy called Deejay TV which is kind of like Italian styled MTV which plays music videos as well as comedy skits later in the evening.

Having a telley in the kitchen, I enjoy tuning to the channel and listening to the music while doing banal chores like washing the dishes and preparing food. And since the start of the fasting month, Cart and I have been tuning in to break the 4am stillness and make it more lively.

We discovered a program called “The Club” where there will be a video profile of someone introducing themselves, answering provocative questions and are able to be contacted via SMS. I found myself morbidly fascinated.

This one here says that she did it in a carabinieri barrack.

rinaz.net

This one here says that he really really really wants to find a girlfriend.

rinaz.net

This guy here is currently working as a stripper.

rinaz.net

And this one here says that she’s lost trust in all men. And she’s only 19!

rinaz.net

What? Why are you telling all these private stuff to everyone? Do you people realise that you are scaring away potential friends by your desperate-ness? I’m horrified. And yet I cant seem to take my eyes off. Its like a car crash where everyone wants to see the action.

Vuoi conoscermi? Do you want to know me?

rinaz.net

NO! Get a shower first!

Some emails make me so angry

Since the beginning of the internet, Emails are an integral part of life be it for work or for play. It makes it so easy for communicating with people. Type in your contents and click the send button and that’s it. It would be unspeakable to take away emails from daily life.

rinaz.net

But there are days when I just cant stand looking at my email. And just to be clear, I’ve received many nice emails and has had nice conversations and went on to become friends to even meeting them in real life, which is really nice.

Sometimes there are a conglomeration of people who email me the same questions. While its not so bad once or twice in a span of time, it does get overwhelming when it gets back to back. Its like back when I was teaching computer applications to a group of kids, and the situation inevitably becomes like this :

Me : Okay kids, click on this button and you can make a circle. Try it!
Kid1 : Miss Marina! Miss Marina! Is this how you make it?
Me : That’s good
Kid2 : Miss Marina! Miss Marina! Did I do it correctly?
Me : Yes dear
Kid3 all the way to kid40 : Miss Marina! Miss Marina! Miss Marina! x 100
Me : Sigh

But in the end, that’s not so bad because although annoying, that these kids don’t mean bad and instead, genuinely interested to learn and get information. And throughout the years, I learnt to be a little more patient and understanding because its just better that way. But what are the biggest thing that really ticks me off is rude, demanding, and tactless people.

Example 1 : Dear Marina, could you please tell me how to _____ ?

rinaz.net

I take precious time out of my busy domestic goddess life to reply back to you, and give you information. And that’s the end of it. The end. Nothing heard back from you. Not a “Oh hey, that worked!”, “Sorry Marina, I think that its too far for me”, “Thanks for helping me out, I really appreciate it!”

But no, not even a thank you. Would it kill you to have the courtesy to reply back to give feedback?

Example 2 : GIVE ME FREE!

rinaz.net

Ok. So let me get this straight. You want to use my photo that I have taken to be used in a commercial website but you want my watermark removed, you don’t offer payment, or at the very least, not even a credit back to this site?

The answer is no.

Example 3 : I want you to do link exchange with me!

rinaz.net

Did you even read the sites that you go to before putting your copy and paste text in their contact page? Is it so difficult to do a search on who the blog owner is? And is it so difficult to type our their name to make a little bit of a semblance that you give a crap.

No Scott, I am not interested. And if you took the time to read a few pages of this blog, you’ll see it is completely unrelated to your site.

But this guy that I’m going to show you really takes the cake.

Exhibit 4 : The creepy spammer

He starts off being a blog reader, putting his comments in blog posts. I thought that he was an eccentric, but mostly a harmless, retired man living in California. Then he started to use my contact page and eventually, I gave him my email address for easy communication.

And then he started to put comments like this :

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

And in the emails :

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

rinaz.net

He tried to add me on facebook :

rinaz.net

All of which I’ve ignored since he’s already has lost my trust. And not content that I’ve been ignoring him, he starts to spam me instead.

rinaz.net

This is so creepy, its not funny! He compares me to my blog-mate Claudia constantly, he spams me even though I’ve already asked him to stop, and having known my email, he stops commenting on the blog post and instead EMAILS me his comments about my blog posts, and even my TWITTER! It is as if he has something to hide by not replying to the sites directly.

The last I’ve heard is that he’s been bothering other Singaporean female bloggers too! What is with this guy?!

Thank goodness there is a block function on gmail and facebook. I’d probably go ballistic without it.

I know I don’t usually rant in my blog, but you know, I’ve had enough!

Some of the things I eat during Ramadan in Rome

Blog readers Jannah, Oharlie, Brad and Xinyun has asked me to blog about typical food that is eaten during Ramadan. So this post is dedicated to you all.

While the types of food consumed during Ramadan differs from country to country, the one thing that I always see being eaten during the fasting month is dates.

rinaz.net

Dates are the fruits of a type of palm trees. These are the staple food in the Middle East, but you’ll see various types of them being sold out of Egypt such as in Singapore, Malaysia and even Rome especially during Ramadan because of the high level of potassium in dates, making it a perfect food to have after fasting for long hours.

When I was a young girl though, I remember that one of the first times seeing it, it was very daunting for me.

rinaz.net

It doesn’t look very appetizing with its insect-brown colour and wrinkly skin, it looked quite scary for a 6 year old. And I’ve always had a mini phobia with dried fruits because of how they looked like. But with my parents persuading me on, I gave it a try and thought that it didn’t taste bad. In fact, it was peculiarly sweet.

I still think that eating dates can look very unglamorous, with the spitting out of the seeds but all in all it wasn’t so bad to eat.

Another item that I see very frequently during Ramadan in Singapore is the Air Kathira.

rinaz.net

This is a peculiar looking milky-drink that has black seeds which resembles tadpole eggs. Those are actually basil seeds and I love having this drink because of the nice, satisfying feeling when chewing the soft seeds.

It can come in various flavours from plain milk, avocado, mint, rose … It’s a pity that it’s not sold during non Ramadan days.

But for Rome though, with the majority of the population being Roman Catholics, Ramadan feels more nondescript. I didn’t really notice any particular special food being made. I see kebabs, and Arabic sweets and such, but you could get them any time of the year.

So far, here are some the food that we’ve prepared for Sahur and Iftar :

This is Farro

rinaz.net

The main ingredient is wheat grain and its soaked, boiled and drained and you could mix it with anything you like. Cart likes his with chopped boiled egg, tomato, and cheese, drizzled with olive oil. While I like to add mine with tuna and corn.

It’s best eaten cold and its a wonderful summer food.

This is Piadina

rinaz.net

Piadina is a type of flatbread which is good to keep in the fridge for those days when you want to have something quick to eat. Just put it on the hot plate, sprinkle some stracchino cheese, some sliced tomatoes and some rughetta and a few minutes later, you have a decent meal.

This was a couple of samosa and salad that we quickly cooked since Cart wanted to go out and pizza afterwards.

rinaz.net

So it was just a simple, light meal to tide over till the pizza. By the way, the samosas were bought in a Bangladeshi shop not too far away from where were live! For 3.50 euro for a pack of 10, it was a bit expensive though.

Here is one of my favourite thing to cook, Veggie Lasagna.

rinaz.net

What’s strange is that I love this veggie lasagna better than the one with beef even as it’s tastier. Made of a mix of ricotta cheese, spinach, mozzarella cheese, zucchini in tomato sauce, I just love eating it. Here is a video I made on how to make one 🙂

Finally but not least, here is the Couscous that Cart made yesterday

rinaz.net

This is one of Cart’s favourite food to eat – couscous with vegetables and chickpeas. It was quite a hassle making this though, with the long amount of time taken to prepare it. But it was worth it in the end to tuck into a bowl of couscous.

And with that, I’m going to end this post abruptly because its such a torture writing a food entry when I’m fasting.

Totally loving my Pupa Lipsticks

I did a video blog about Pupa cosmetics last year, but I thought that I’d just blog about about them again Cart and I were at Castel Romano not too long ago and I think that no trip there would be complete for any mekap lover not to visit the Pupa Store. And I got me some lippies! I wouldn’t call them haul though, its not like they are SO heavy that they need to be pulled. So I don’t understand why mekap guru’s keep calling them hauls.

Anyway, Castel Romano, being an outlet store, the Pupa cosmetics sold there are way cheaper compared to the ones being sold in regular stores because the items were mostly out of season items. It really didn’t mattered to me though, it was still lovely! And with the month being the sale season, I just went crazy on getting a few things there. It was really cheap affordable.

First in line is the Brilliant Lipstick – Shiny Lips in 03

rinaz.net

I quite like the simplistic style of the lippy. I appreciated that the bottom part being coloured as it gives me a preview of what colour the lippy will be and saves me the hassle of having to open the cap and see what colour it was inside. It was sold for 2.90 Euro while I was there, which makes it such a steal!

rinaz.net

Putting it on, I love how very natural it looks on my lips. There is a hint of pink, but its not overly barbie. While you could see some specks of gold in the lippy itself, you don’t really see it on your lips. Instead it made my lips have a healthy shine.

In this picture, as well as the rest, I’ve used Michelle Phan’s Neutral Beauty tutorial by the way. And I love love love this look! Its the look that I’ve been sporting a lot lately. It makes me look natural but still polished.

Next is the New Chic Lipstick in 01

rinaz.net

Excuse the stain. In my haste opening it for the first time, I smudged it a little. Urgh! I bought this accidentally, mistaking it for another colour. I didn’t really want to get this as the colour looks quite similar to my Kiko Red Emotion Satin Lipstick.

By the way, the case looks pretty elegant doesn’t it? With it being all gold and all, making it look more expensive than it really is. It was actually 3 Euro when I bought it so I didn’t feel too bad about the mix up. The only odd thing is that this lippy has a screw on top. So the first time I opened, I didn’t realised it and kept pulling the top and hence the smudge. Oh well.

rinaz.net

Putting it on, it looked instant sexeh! Comparing it with my Kiko lippy, while both are red, this lippy is a bright and shiny red. A very eye-catching shade. Probably perfect to seduce a man.

And next is the New Chic Lipstick in 02

rinaz.net

This is a really fun colour! Opening the tube, you can definitely see the speckles of gold in this lippy! And like the previous lippy, this was 3 Euro too.

rinaz.net

Putting it on, it’ll make your lips a nice wash of peachy-coral pink and gold. Disco 80s! I feel so much like Farrah Fawcett doing her Carlie’s Angel thing while wearing this. I think its lovely for a summer beach look

And finally, this is the New Chic Lipstick in 54

rinaz.net

I didn’t think that I’d love this colour, because from the tube, it looked very dark. And I’m not into those Goth/Emo dark lips look. But when I swatched it on, it didn’t looked too dark, instead it looked very wearable! This one was the most expensive of the 4 lippies I bought that day, but at 4.80 Euro, it was still a good deal.

rinaz.net

I really loved how it looked like on my lips. Its looked sexeh and flirty and fun! And definitely kissable. Definitely not like what I expected it to be

By the way, what’s interesting about this lippy, and probably what’s making it slightly more expensive is that, there is a mirror inside. Making it quite convenient when you have limited space in your mekap bag.

rinaz.net

Here is a swatch of the lippies in daylight. And all the pictures of me wearing my lippies are in daylight by the way

rinaz.net

From left to right : Shiny Lipstick in 03, New Chic lipstick Precious Edition in 01, New Chic Lipstick Precious Edition in 02, New Chic Lipstick in 54

None of these lipsticks are drying by the way. I could put them on for hours and my lips doesn’t crack or feel dry or anything like that. Which is awesome because I have awefully dry lips.

With this, I probably wont be buying any new lipsticks for the next 2 years or so. I’ve so many nao

Ramadan is here again!

Ramadan is here again! This is the month where Muslims abstain from consuming food and drink as well as bad thoughts, from dawn to dusk.

rinaz.net

I’ve been practising this since I was a child, starting to fast half a day and moving on to full day. It was a proud moment for me, seeing that I was able to do it, like the “Big People” did. Hence after that, its rather second nature for me. And personally for me, I like this month as it heightens my mental clarity, and I can focus better on doing more activities without the distractions of the need to feed.

And as much as I thought in the beginning that Cart would have a difficult time, I’m very proud to see that he’s able to adjust and make it though the entire day. In fact, without realising it, he’s been doing it for the past 4 years now. For him, his biggest motivator is to feel how the poor are experiencing. Quite noble of him.

In any case, fasting in Italy is a lot different compared to fasting in Singapore with my family. Firstly, its a little more challenging because being summer, the days are longer compared to in Singapore. For this year, in Italy we have to fast about 16 hours while in Singapore it is about 14 hours. And it will be longer the next year and the year after that because the Islamic calendar is 10 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar.

rinaz.net
Too sleepy to eat at 4am

The other difference is that since I’ve been living in Rome, my diet has changed. So I’m fasting with Italian food such as Pasta, Piadina, Farro and such instead of my regular rice or noodles. It took a while to adjust, but in the end, food is food.

rinaz.net

But the biggest difference is in the exuberance. Its a lot more livelier when I was in Singapore. I’d rush back back home from work to help out with my mum preparing food for breaking fast and all the while listening to the sermon on the radio warna 94.2 fm and then listening to the very famous and evergreen Arabic song, indicating that it was sunset and that we are able to break fast. By then my family members would already be seated and all six of us would enjoy our meal together, chattering to each other.

[audio:arabicsong.mp3]

It was lively!

rinaz.net

Its a lot more quiet and nondescript here. With it being only the two of us fasting, no radio station that I know of broadcasting breaking fast times, even going to the mosque in Rome for the final 10 days last year, I could count with one hand the amount of people doing tarawih. There doesn’t seem to be any vibrancy for me like it was back in Singapore. Oh well.

In any case, I would like to wish everyone a beautiful month of Ramadan. Isn’t it amusing by the way, that this month, where all the evil beings are chained up, coincides with the Hungry ghost festival?

rinaz.net

Sidenote : I was wondering, if there are anyone in Singapore would be kind enough to help me? I’d like a daily recording in mp3 format from 7pm – 7.30pm on Warna 94.2 Fm. You could send it to my email, makawaru[at]gmail.com and I’ll put it up on my blog for all to share and give credit to you for helping, of course

Updated : Hey, online streaming is back! I can try to use Audacity to record it!

Hooray! I has an ice cream maker!

Cart and I were at Castel Romano, a designer outlet, mainly looking around for nice things that we could get as presents, taking advantage of the sale season. We were just browsing around the kitchen shop where I saw an ice cream maker and suddenly, it was as if the entire store was illuminated by a shimmering, bright halo.

It could be that I’m influenced by Wati’s recent posts of ice cream or that I’ve yet to see an ice cream maker being sold in the malls here in Rome, or that it was still a heatwave going on, but impulsively, I grabbed it and squealed, “Want!” It wasn’t too expensive anyway, like 30 Euro which is equivalent to one dinner for two in a restaurant.

So we took the last set home, and we couldn’t wait to start to make our own gelato!

Our unit was the Krups ice cream maker. And there is a jug which needs to be placed in the freezer in advance, for at least 12 hours.

rinaz ice cream maker gelato

And here the jug is making friends with my pack of samosa. Oh! Speaking of which, Cart and I found an alimentari thanks to our Singaporean friend, Lajay who recommended it and we found quite a few Asian stuff there like banana chips and halal samosas! I’m totally gonna stuff my face with that for the next few days.

Ahem. Anyway! While waiting for the jug to freeze, we could start to prepare the ice cream mix. The basic ingredients are, to mix whole milk, sugar, and eggs together and warm it up in a saucepan without boiling it. Let it cool down to room temperature and add cream. You could change the recipe accordingly as to how sweet or how creamy you like it to be or add vanilla or chocolate chips or whatever you like. And then put the mix in the refrigerator to cool down.

When the jug is sufficiently cold, its time to take it out of the freezer and assemble the ice cream maker. This is how the parts look like unassembled.

rinaz ice cream maker gelato

And this is how it looks like assembled (with an ice cream already being mixed) Careful not to touch the insides of the cooling jug, its cold!

rinaz ice cream maker gelato

And then slowly add the cold-end ice cream mix from the open lid above. And in about 20 minutes you’ll see your mixture slowly turn into ice cream!

And now that we’ve been so patient all these while, finally its time to dig in!

rinaz ice cream maker gelato
This is a very nice honey frozen yoghurt Cart made 😀

So far, we’ve made vanilla ice cream, blood orange sorbetto, lemon frozen yoghurt and honey frozen yoghurt on the ice cream maker. Its too bad that the machine only makes a litre at a time because that’s only about 2 servings each for the both of us!

rinaz ice cream maker gelato
This is the blood orange sorbetto I made. Its as easy as combining sugar water and orange juice!

Some might be wondering, what’s the need for an ice cream maker when I can just make the mix and stuff it in the freezer. I think the biggest difference is the texture. While the one stuffed in the freezer will be crystallised, the one made by an ice cream maker will turn out soft and creamy.

While the gelato that we made might not match to San Crispino or Tony’s Gelateria, there is something very satisfying about making your own ice cream

This is an additional incentive for friends to come over, yes?

Sidenote : It’s Singapore’s National day today! Happy birthday Singapore! By the way, does anyone has a minus-one for the Corrinne May song? I really like it.
