Island Creamery – Great place to chill out

Monday, September 10th, 2007

After hearing CC raving about it for the upteempth time, and seeing so many good reviews about it in so many blogs, the pingsters headed to Island Creamery for a dose of ice cream.

The place

Located in Serene Center, Island Creamery is a very cosy and a great place to chill out with friends. One of the thing that struck me was how cheerful and inviting the area was, as seen from the walls decorated with personal photos. You could request to print a photo here using your camera’s memory card.

I looked at the pictures on the wall and by sheer coincidence, I spot out a picture of the Vesporeans during one of their outings last year!

As the place is popular gathering place, it is quite vibrant and can be quite noisy at times, thus it isnt a recommended place for anyone to do their studies! *hint hint*

The service

The folks running Island Creamery was very friendly, ready with a smile and quick to assist you. No surly faces here! There was this pretty waitresses who was more than willing to help Paced and me while we requested for a printing paper even though it was a very busy day for the staff.

The gentleman who were serving us ice cream was even kind and patient enough to wait while we pondered on which ice cream to get for our table.

The ice cream

A single scoop is $2.50, double scoop is $4.00 and a 500ml tub is $8.00. We shared among us four tubs of different types of ice cream – namely Nutella, Reverso, Burnt Caramel and the very popular Teh Tarik. I digged in and had my taste.

It was a divided camp with Paced, Dhope, Malique, Ethan, Claudia, Aaron, CC, Arzhou enjoying their ice cream while NTT, Attilio and I think that although it was nice, but it didnt meet our expectations. As we’ve tasted good Italian gelato before, our expectations were higher. Thus we found the ice cream a little overrated, judging from the reviews from many blogs. I would have liked it better if their ice cream were more flavourful.

However, I do have to give credit for the rather tasty teh-tarik ice cream – my favourite out of the four. They actually managed to make it taste just like the actual teh tarik tea!

In a nutshell

Island creamery is a great place to chill out with friends to have nice ice cream at affordable prices with friendly and helpful staff to assist you. A highly recommended place to visit.

Weddings are too much work

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

A bunga telur is a decorative container for eggs meant to be given away as gifts to guests in a Malay wedding.

When mum brought home a huge box of bunga telur and an ornate copper display stand, I started to have my mini panic attacks. Cartcart and I havent even planned our wedding yet and already mum has been talking and advicing me about our future wedding. I wonder who was more excited – Me or her? :P

She’s been giving me advice like :

  1. To set the date in the registar of marriages at least 6 months in advance.
  2. To have a double ceremony
  3. Drinking jamu to make me more fertile

And the more she talked, the more I am in realisastion that there are so much preparations to do! Not to mention the costs of the ceremony like, catering, invitations, dowry et all. And the more I think about it, the more I am starting to feel overwhelmed.

Why do weddings have to be so much work?

Vivo Vespa first year anniversary

Group - Vivo Vespa 2007

I missed out on much of the activities for the Vespa Club first year anniversary. But I still had an eyeful looking at all the colourful and interesting scooters of all sorts of shapes and size.

Chilling out at the verandah - Vivo Vespa 2007

When I reached Wild Rocket at Mount Emily, I could see lots of people lounging around over at the verandah. Most of them looked a little tired, probably from the activities that they did this morning.

Some of the Vespa Club members explained to me that the participants did a number of challenges around Singapore. It sounds fun, though I have to admit that I didnt miss it all that much in account of the rain and traffic due to the Iron Man Triathlon on sunday ;)

So I walked around and looked at the rows of beautiful vespas. I enjoyed looking at them. There’s something just so unique about it – a work of art by itself.

Green Scooter - Vivo Vespa 2007

Like this Green PX150. I really like the paint job for this one. Green is such a beautiful colour. This owner has impeccable taste. *thumbs up*

Vespa Babe - Vivo Vespa 2007

Though this scooter isnt really my type of style, once has to admit that it is very eye catching. This very flashy chrome laden vespa even comes with a babe. The fact that she’s wearing green makes the vespa even more valuable :D

Hello Kitty Vespa - Vivo Vespa 2007

Isnt this Hello Kitty Vespa the cutest? :D This scooter is such a head turner that its even stomped! Now I’m considering of respraying my scooter and stick a rinaz avatar! :)

Soonafter was the lucky draw and then the prize giving presentation :

Best overall Vespa - Vivo Vespa 2007

Winner of the best overall vespa

Best Paintjob Vespa - Vivo Vespa 2007

Winner of the best paintjob Vespa (Coincidentally, I nominated this Vespa the best looking vespa at the Big Bike Fest last year)

Very lovely scooters indeed! Do you like scooters? Would you get a Vespa? :)

A beautiful day with the kids of Darul Ihsan

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

So what if the rain poured and there was a heavy traffic jam. It was still a beautiful day spent, together with the charming kids from Darul Ihsan.

Group Picture :D Picture stolen from Shazdil

About three weeks ago, Shaz and Aidil advertised a bloggers outing with the kids from the Darul Ihsan Orphanage and I thought that it was such a beautiful gesture and something that has never been done before in the Singapore blogosphere.

Even though I was not familliar with most of the cliques, curiosity got the better of me. I emailed Shaz and Aidil and in time, the event was finalised.

On the morning itself, I reached the orphanage about half an hour late due to my being unfamilliar with the area. Eventually I managed to stumble in the correct building. The first person that I recognized was Shaz, as she called out to the girls to form up to enter the bus. I quickly parked my scooter and walked briskly, entered the bus and plonked on a seat.

I said hello to the other bloggers that was sitting next to me – Dyllah, Fai and Aidil. There was such lively chatter by the kids who were already inside. They are most adorable. I watched amusedly as one of the boy, decided to stick 4 name tags on his shirt.

4 name tags!

me : Wow! You have 4 name tags! (peers) So which one is your real name?

boy : My name is Fernando Torres!

me : Hahaha! (Who’s that?)

Fai was chatting animatedly to the kids and I was impressed at how the kids opened up so quickly. That was really heartening to me.

Giggling

Eventually, I realised that the bus wasnt even moving an inch. We were stuck in a jam! Rayyan explained that there was an Iron Man Triathlon going on and that certain roads were closed, causing the jam. With time running out, we decided to exit the bus and walk the remaining way to the cinema.

When we reached the theater, we had to literally grope our way to our designated seats. But we couldnt see a thing in the dark theater. In the end, we just grabbed a random seat and just enjoyed ratatouille. I do hope that we didnt disturbed the other patrons too much though!

Smile

After the very enjoyable movie, we headed off to have lunch over at Cafe le Caire to have a sumptious arabic fare. It was really yummy! Moreover, I think eating together communally really enhanced the experience. Suddenly Murni appeared and handed us a box. Its a surprise!

Beautiful cupcakes!

We opened the box and we did have a pleasant surprise! Such beautiful cupcakes! And they taste really yummy!

After lunch, I relaxed and sat next to a young lady and I started to ask her

me : Are you a volunteer?

she : No …

me : Oh! (embarassed)

After talking for a while, I found out that her name was Mahmooda and that she was 18 years old. She’s currently studying in a local institution. She was such a sweet, gentle and soft spoken girl. We talked about school choices and then she talked about her aspirations to be an accountant and her interest in beauty therapy.

Its refreshing to meet a teenager who has aspirations. As compared to some of the teenagers that I meet who are disinterested in school, talking to Mahmooda was like a breath of fresh air.

Mahmooda, Marina and Deen

Here is the only picture I have of Mahmooda and me with a bit of Deen’s head.

Suddenly a most adorable tiny little boy approached me and asked

boy : Whats your name?

me : Marina

boy : Really? My mum was called Tity Marina

me : (heart melts) Whats your name?

boy : Deen. Thats my sister there, in the pink shirt.

Deen

Deen started to play with my camera and I showed him how to snap pictures. Thats when the kids started to go crazy with picture taking! Looking at the images in the SD card, I’ve absolutely no idea what they are snapping at. Hahaha! But it makes for pretty good experimental pictures I think :)

Later on Iza came up and asked everyone to write their hobbies and interest on a piece of paper and promised to try the best to source for these interest.

Girl

Time seemed to pass by so quickly, in no time at all, we were back in the bus, and back at the orphanage. The volunteers passed gifts boxes to the kids and I cant help but to gush at the extremely cute personalised picture frames that the kids had. How does Eja does it?

I cant help but to smile at all those happy faces. Thanks for organizing it Shazdil and gang :)

Today was such a beautiful, beautiful day.

This clip pretty much sums everything :)

Watch in youtube

By the way, most of the pictures that you see here are snapped by the kids since the camera was constantly being kidnapped by them! Hahaha! We have potential photographers in our mist :)

I love this shot!

I love this shot that one of the kids took of me! :D

How to make Ramly Burger

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

I was out with a couple of my blogger friends in clementi on thursday night. There was a pasar malam in that area and at the same time, I thought that it would be nice to show my friend Attilio what a night market here was like.

In larger pasar malam, one could even have rides such as a viking ride and feris wheel.

I like pasar malam because of the atmosphere and how festive it felt with the bustling of crowds. You could buy almost anything here – cds, clothes, even household appliances.

But personally for me, the highlight of a pasar malam would be the delightfully sinful food that is sold there.

One of these food is the ramly burger. One of these burgers would probably choke your arteries with the amount of condiments that is added in, but I think that its something that one should try at least once.

Here is a clip on how a ramly burger is being made :

The burger wasnt the best that I had – the best ones would definitely be the original in Malaysia. Oh dear, I feel a craving coming on!
